thanks!! 🙌 And yep, I'm American! Soccer traditionally is always in a tough spot here in the states because we have so many other sports competing for our attention. Our football is obviously #1, but we've got hockey, baseball, basketball, etc... going year round as well. With that said, and I can only speak on my personal experience with it, but the grassroots soccer over here is in a really good spot and has helped grow the sport. It doesn't get a lot of press, but a lof of the USL teams have some really passionate fans. It will never overtake football for us in the general population, but soccer has definitely grown in stature. Very cool to see!

One of my favourite ever tactics was a Counter Attacking 4-1-4-1 with a PF(D) up front. I was mucking about as a test at first by playing a player there with a Poacher/AF profile but it worked wonders. He'd drop into the midfield, help our press, then spring forward with his natural attributes and get on the end on through balls anf crosses.

Love your work as usual, especially that segment about the difference between Def, Sup and Att. May be controversial but I would remove any roles with hard coded traits from the game. In my ideal world there wouldn't be anything other than the positions themselves, and then the player instructions then shape them into specific roles and traits you want to see, rather than the specialist roles in those positions.

I rarely ever used the PF/de, but every now and then the youth academy produces a forward with zero goal scoring abilities and that role suits them quite nicely. Although I have to admit, I would rather see that role to be called PF/su insteadt of /de. After all, the PF is by definition more of a supporting character and not a striker. Yep, they should interchange nicely! In fact, I'd say bringing out the PF(S) later in the match is an effective way to use him; pressure the opponent when they're tired. PF role in my FM universe with Torino only works as reactive strategy. During my time using PF as a starter, his performance was rather disappointing. Then I changed the striker to the PF role several times at the beginning to the middle of the second half. The results were encouraging, my Torino often made a comeback and rose from defeat in the final score. Is this reactive strategy relevant to the basic attribute of PF's aggressiveness that exploits opponents?
@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker
2 күн бұрын
It could be the factor of the 2nd half fatigue in your opponent. Switching to a PF tells your striker to hassle the opponent more, and if they're more fatigued, that could definitely play a part. So yep, the reactive strategy ties into how you're defending in the 2nd half

I am a bit nostalgic for soccer of a few decades ago, where there was much less running and this left room for high quality players. The question I fear asking is: are the tactics the same way as Personal instructions? If I choose a blank slate and tick all the same boxes, can I replicate Gegenpress, or is choosing gegenpress come with some hidden atributes/instructions?
@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker
3 күн бұрын
If you choose the right player roles, you could create a high-tempo pressing system without needing any team instructions. But if you wanted to specifically use a Gegenpress, you would need to use a few simple team instructions (namely moving your teams pressing line higher up).
@anders4442
3 күн бұрын
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker OK, maybe I wasn't clear. Provided we have two tactics - in both all the player roles and all the team instructions are the same, but one is a gegenpress template and one is made from a blank, custom template to which the same team instructions are added. I wonder if they would play the same, or differently (like the PF and AF with the same instructions). I know it is incredibly complex thing to test, I guess I'm asking if you thought about it and what is your feeling about it.

I notice that you rarely have the "prevent short distribution" option toggled on. Do you find that when this is off that your PF will get more opportunities to press opposing CBs and FBs?
@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker
3 күн бұрын
Yea I hardly ever use that instruction. If the PF wants to press the goalie they can, but I don't feel it's a requirement. And like you alluded to, the PF will be closing down a lot anyway, so that "prevent" instruction can be redundant and lead to more errors in how the close down. Not saying it's a bad instruction or anything, but unless they have like a sweeper keeper on attack playing balls from the midfield, I don't use it

What I'd found with PF on Attack and Advanced Forward combination was they would sometimes struggled to link up with each other because one of them was on one half space while the other was on another half space and it happen more often when my opponent played compact defensive shape and/or used trap outside, and I don't like that at all.
