HOW TO TACKLE BABY SNAIL'S MORTALITY
Just like every other livestock business, mortality is inevitable, also in snail farming, but the rate is the issue. And this challenge is usually with the babies.
To maintain and enjoy any snail farm, the farmer must attain the level of understanding of snail farming so much that mortality is no longer an issue because untill the hatchlings survive their is no farm.
A lot of farmers troops into snail farming and at the same rate troops out of it, because they were told snail farming is as easy as A,B,C not knowing that was only for the theory. From the practical point of view it's not as easy as mostly said, especially when you do not have an experienced farmer to rely on.
Don't get it twisted, snail farming is fun when you understand what it entails. When you understand it's art, you can maneuver the factors that supports successful snail farming to your taste and definitely, you can be easily known for it, because it's a business millions of people are prospecting to venture into.
There are lots of causes of mortality in snail farming, especially with baby snails and some of those reasons are what I'll be briefly highlighting in this post.
So, let's Go!
1.) Heat: Snail's greatest threat for survival is heat. Once the temperature of your farm starts to increase you have to also brace yourself up and increase your water sprinkling rate. The water sprinkling should help totally, but if it's still a threat then make way for more ventilation.
2.) Dryout: Dryout is one of the most commonest day-to-day causes of snail's mortality. A lot of farmers up till this day keep losing their snails to dryout because they do not understand what effects dryout is posing to snail farming.
Dryout is when a reduced rate of moisture mostly coupled or caused by excessive breeze that dries up the snail's slime thereby preventing the snail from free walking and other activities. This is actually a big topic for another day, and it may be all you need to understand to handle your snail's mortality.
So, the solution to this is to reduce breeze flow into your farm, increase mulch in your farm and moisturize appropriately. This is a simple trick to curtail or stop heat relating snail mortality Bonniehood Snail Farm has been using for several years.
3.) Calcium: The truth is, if you do not understand and value the importance of calcium supplements, then you're as good as out of business before you even starts.
Snails generally need calcium supplements for almost all their activities: growth, egg laying, boosting immunity, replacing cracked shells, maintaining beautiful colours etc Aside from egg laying baby snails also need calcium for the above and we have recommend eggshells for them as it suits their thriving.
So, one reason why your snails may be dying could be that you're not supplying them enough calcium supplements. Oysters or Clam shell calcium supplements are awesome for adult snails and eggshell calcium supplements perfect for baby snails.
Wishing you all the best in this adventure!
