thanks for making this video. I use my prius for camping and trips throughout Colorado and western usa. I got Internet bullied for weeks by some jeep enthusiasts because they said I couldn't go camping in a car. I explained people were camping in cars long before 4x4's became popular. I have a 2016 prius and take it over mountain passes in Colorado on 4x4 roads, it takes careful maneuvers sometimes. But I love proving the jeepers wrong

I've driven up the rutted Old Fall River Road at Rocky Mountain National Park in my Prius, but it took some very careful driving to not hit bottom (we touched three times). My daughter said it was like riding on an amusement park ride! The 2010 Prius' clearance is only 5.5". I wouldn't do such a rutted road again.

I don't actually camp with my Prius, but I do sleep in it during road trips across the country. I started out making the whole back end as a bed but now sleep on the passenger side only as you do. I need to keep the back passenger seat clear in the future to use to change clothes or put on my shoes as you showed. Makes much more sense than getting my 6' 4" body into the front from the back when it is raining outside. I have used air mattresses in the past but decided not to in the Prius because they seemed too tall as well as too wide. The one you showed looks perfect and warrants a second thought on my part. I also am going to steal your idea of using the cooler stacked on a tote box behind the passenger seat. Lots of good info. Thank you for sharing.

+tbirdracefan Thanks for the comments, glad it was helpful. Yes, the Colman Slim Twin air mattress fits perfectly. You can measure the height in the back under the folded seat and buy storage boxes to fit under there if you can't find a cooler the right size. I just happened to have one that fit perfectly. Walmart or a container store should have all sorts of storage box sizes. Take a tape measure with you and measure them in the store, because what they say might not be their actual measurement. The width and depth are also important for fitting.

+tinabeane Thanks, Tina. I've re-thought the table a bit, since in reality, it doesn't fold out with all my stuff in there! So I've chosen a different shape of carabiners to hold it in place (ones that are easier to snap on and off of the tie-down eyelets). That way, the table can slide under, then slide out. I have four strong small magnets to hold the four corners of the screen in place now, then adding the magnetic strips is easy.

I did something similar, I put magnets in duct tape around the net. I don't have a Prius, but even so, the microwave and giant camp stove are way too big. I have a single burner butane stove, works great. Even a backpacking stove is adequate. Also a cargo box on top really helps to free up space inside.
@TerrellWSmith

+Bring the Sink Thanks for your comments. Actually, the big stove I use for groups. Yes, a one burner stove would work well. I wouldn't put a cargo box on top due to the increased drag (it's a Prius, and I like getting super mileage), and a cargo box might also be a bear attractant.
@GM-ul1el

If you don't want bears, cook outside on a small folding table or the parks picnic table is even better. The cargo carrier won't attract bears any more than food in your vehicle. When I camp in a park that has bears, I enclose my car perimeter with a "bear fence", end of problem.

Hi Chris, listen to your friends. You paid a lot to have a wonderful car. Using your Prius to pull a trailer might physically be possible, but it could wreck the transmission, I have no idea of what it might do to the lightweight frame, and it could damage the brakes and regenerative braking. Plus, in some states, it could get you a costly ticket. Vehicles are allowed to pull only what they are rated for, as listed in the owners manual, and sometimes on the door sticker. Have an accident while towing over the vehicle's rated limit, and you might find yourself in big trouble with your insurance company refusing to pay anything, along with the ticket. Glad you enjoyed the video!

Last year i had to buy a replacement as I had my bed all set up, (I like to not fill it too firmly) and was driving from Texas and while in Colorado I kept hearing what sounded like a muffled backfire occasionally. My suggestion is if you really want to be stealthy.... don't use black cloth for the windows. It's really not that black as you can see in the video. I reflects light back to the viewer. If a cop shines a flashlight into the window, he will see it. Instead, invest in black velvet. It soaks up the light and does not reflect back. As a photographer, when I shot jewelry and wanted a black background that's what I used. Nothing is blacker than black velvet.

I got a 2007 prius and some election signs what I did was used some lip stick and painted it on the frame of the window that is after I got the election signs where they were close enough to fit them in the window. THIS IS WHAT I DID TO GET THAT PERFECT FIT. I then put the election sign up to the window and pressed where the lipstick would transfer to the election sign material then I used razor knife and scissors to cut them out. Razor knife worked better but you had to be patient and take your time to get it right. Practice on some coroplastic first so you don't burn through your good material. Once you have your panels cut you can paint them or cover them in felt so your car does not look like you are sleeping in it. If you do it right the car will look like the windows are murdered out black. I did the same to the rear window but I put the lipstick on the outside of the window and then cut it and it fits perfect in that rear hole. When I drive I NEVER take the back glass panel off. I find that neanderthals like to tailgate Prius and when they do their lights will fill your cabin with all that light very unsafe to do this so I engineered them out. Better to block that out and I do this by keeping that rear hatch window covered all the time besides it keeps the car so much cooler without letting the sun bake your stuff inside the car. Never had a cop say boo about this I even got a speeding ticket he did not say one word about my rear window covered. I am a former trucker so I don't need a rear view mirror I use the side mirrors to see what is behind me. I plan to fashion a net to go over that area so I can store my window covers for front sides etc.
@TerrellWSmith
8 жыл бұрын
Very interesting method to get a good fit. I know what you mean about tailgaters - I love the split back window for this reason - I adjust myself in the seat slightly such that the bar which splits the back window also blocks out their direct light beams. Then I start slowing down ever so slightly, until they pass me. Some drivers don't care what speed they drive, though, they slow down and continue to tailgate. If I speed up, they speed up. It's like they have an auto-tailgate-system built into their car! I don't know what the laws are in most states, but I think as long as you have side view mirrors on both sides the back window can be blocked (it will be anyway if you have a lot of stuff piled in). Still, I like to be able to see out, and use all three mirrors.

Hi Terrell, love the video you made, thanks for the work doing that. I see you travel to some hot locations and I am wondering how much gas do you think the car uses if you were to leave the a/c running for the 8hrs when you are asleep? and how often the engine starts and stops?
@TerrellWSmith
6 жыл бұрын
I hate hot places, mainly because it's hard to sleep. The AC doesn't use that much gas, because it's electric, but the heater does, because it uses the heat from the engine. Either way, the engine cycles on and off and tends to wake me up. So I don't run the engine at night. For cold, I have a very nice, warm sleeping bag. For hot places, I leave the windows on both side open to get a cross air flow. But, there's a down side. Mosquitoes love me (the feeling's not mutual, I hate them), so I have netting. But due to the curvature of the windows, if it rains hard, rain splatters in. So I made awnings for the windows. But I find they are somewhat cumbersome to set up. So I've been trying to come up with a better solution. It is possible to run the car's fan, which draws in air up front and it goes out in the back, which is nice. But the fan seems to use more electricity than I imagined it would, which causes the engine to cycle on and off which tends to wake me up. I've considered mounting a small fan running off an auxiliary battery in a piece of plexiglass to fit into the window, but the curvature of the glass, plus the way the windows self-reverse if they run into any object, has given me pause about trying this project. So I'm still pondering an elegant solution. Thanks for the question.

Terry, you are an excellent instructor and well organized DIYer. Do you have a good solution with preventing thief from stealing your Prius catalytic converter while you are sleeping inside? Can we set up an electrified wires around the CAT with the flip of switch drawing power from the 2nd 12v battery? This wouldn't kill the thief but shock them badly enough to move on ...
@TerrellWSmith
3 жыл бұрын
Gary, unfortunately, that has become a very real problem, not only with the Prius, but more and more with other cars as well. Thieves can steal a catalytic converter from a Prius in about 60-90 seconds! A friend of mine recently had it stolen, and the Prius was parked in the driveway of their home! I just traveled from Texas to Wisconsin, and realized I wouldn't be able to sleep well at night just thinking about it. Getting stranded in the middle of "Podunk Littletown" without a catalytic converter would be a disaster. So before I traveled, I did some research, and found that there are several clever ways to prevent (well, at least slow down) the thieves. One place I checked is Priuschat.com. Another is here on KZitem (just search for "Prius catalytic converter theft"). I learned that Toyota has approved a third party shield which attaches to the bottom of the car to help slow down the theft, so hopefully the thieves will move on to an easier target. It's called "Millercat Cat Shield." (I have no relationship with this company.) There are several others like it. You can buy it and install it yourself with the right tools. Since I'm traveling, I ordered one and had Toyota install it for me. Toyota's price was much more than I felt it ought to be, but at least it gave me peace of mind at night. (I was sleeping in hotels, not my car.) I suppose if one is sleeping inside the car, the thieves might choose to go to another car when they see you. If not, rocking the car might get them to stop. After all, there's a guy underneath and the car is on a single jack, so rocking might be all the encouragement he needs to get out of there fast! My next project is to figure out a good way to keep mice out of the car. Two got in on my last camping trip to the Rockies. They love chocolate, but they spit out (or ignore) raisins. Bears also tried to break in but were unsuccessful (fortunately for me!). They left a lot of paw marks and scratches, and eventually broke into nearby cars. The Prius is well made! So I'll probably install a tilt/shake alarm, which will activate if the car is jacked up as well as when bears try to open the Prius "lunchbox."
@gzhang207

@@TerrellWSmith you answered my unraised questions on the loss of CAT to a traveller. The CAT guard/shield seems the only proven solution from various reviews. Another un-deterrence solution is the in-car camera that has "parking" mode. The accelerometer detects the motion and starts a short 15s recording. A British car owner recorded when his car raised in front of shopping mall, noise of CAT cut and the suspect's van leaving with clear side view of people inside and the license plate. Good luck to mice and bear deterrence project!

For the windows, I think it would be much easier to staple, or otherwise, connect some mesh together at the top through whatever method you prefer, to make a slip on pocket so to speak. Then simply open the door, slip it over the door, and the secure it with painters tape, magnet, whatever you like. No more fighting the wind with this option! XD
@terrellsmith2203
7 жыл бұрын
mollerbt, I agree that a pocket slip would work well. I made awnings which slip into the groove on the windows to keep out the rain when it rains hard and the windows are wide open. (I like air.) Since the awnings need the window groove, and a screen slip covers the groove, I'm trying to come up with a simple solution. If I cut holes in the screen where the awnings hang, those nasty mosquitoes and gnats may sneak in. The best solution is that it doesn't rain, but I've not figured that out quite yet. ;)

+Rory W theres a "ready" mode for the prius. i heard , factors involved obviously, but the gas engine turns on for a couple to a few times an hour for a couple to a few minutes to recharge the battery. i dont have a prius myself but this is definitely a selling factor. check out enigmatic nomadics' youtube channel he has an interview with a guy talking about living in the prius, talks about the temperature control too. a bit lengthy but its well worth youre time.
@TerrellWSmith

+Rory W Thanks, Rory. The Prius gas engine only runs when it's needed. This is true while driving as well (so stopping at a light, for example, the gas engine shuts off). So yes, put temperature at Auto, and as needed, the gas engine starts up and shuts off automatically. At a temperature setting of 68F, and outside temperature of 45F, the engine is off for 23-37 minutes, then runs for 1-4 minutes only. (This was a test I did in the daytime. Normally, an outside temperature of 45F at night I wouldn't bother running the car at all, since I have a good sleeping bag.) Conditions such as wind and sun and outside temperature and Auto temperature setting will affect how long the engine will be off before turning on automatically. The Prius is amazing.

Does that year keep the AC/heater working through the night?
@terrellsmith2203
6 жыл бұрын
Yes, as far as I know, on all Prius models, the heater or AC can run as long as the car is turned on (the gas engine will cycle on and off automatically when needed). However, you should be aware that the heat is made from the engine heat, so if it's cold, the engine will run a lot. The AC is entirely electric, so the gas engine will run on and off to keep the battery charged up. If you are a light sleeper (as I am), the gas engine turning on and off automatically may wake you up. It rocks the car slightly when it comes on, but it is very quiet. You probably want to have a CO detector in the car, and maybe a hose on the exhaust pipe to route the exhaust away from the car.

Great video man, but how are you going to handle the heat inside especially in summer?
@TerrellWSmith
8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. It all depends on where you camp. :) I love the mountains, especially the Rockies, and in summer it's not all that hot in the mountains. With open windows (covered with screens), there is a cross breeze. If needed, I also turn on the fan, and just recently bought a small battery powered fan which can also run off a USB port. And if it get's really hot, I will turn on the AC. The beauty of the Prius is that the AC is electric, so the car is turned on but the motor doesn't need to be running to run the AC compressor. The motor kicks on and off as needed to keep the battery charged.

Hi Jeffrey, thanks for asking. I pump up the air mattress with a 12v Coleman QuickPump purchased at Walmart ($14.84) plugged into the Prius 12v auxiliary port (or as some call it, cigarette lighter port). This port will power up to 120w only. For the microwave and rice cooker, I use an inverter (1 KW) hooked directly to the Prius 12v battery. Did ur slim twin last ? Im affraid of air beds , that they lose air all the time .
@TerrellWSmith
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Susan, thanks for the good question. So far yes. But I am very careful with it, making sure nothing sharp is in my pockets! There are disadvantages using an airbed: 1) It punctures easily, so you need to be careful. 2) They do tend to lose air slowly, slowly. So far, I've not had this problem, because I'm not "living" in my Prius, just camping. And I have my air pump if it's needed. (I recently slept on a different airbed for three months, and near the end of that time it had lost some air, but not enough for me to pump it up again.) 3) It changes if you tend to roll around when you sleep (but there's not much room to roll around in a Prius!) 4) Perhaps the biggest issue is that an air bed wicks away your body heat, so if used in cold weather, you need something between your body and the air bed. For this I use an insulating pad. If the weather is hot, my sleeping bag works just fine. Some advantages: 1) It's inexpensive compared with foam. 2) It folds up very small, taking up little space. Bottom line: If you want a more comfortable sleep, get a foam mattress (firmness to your taste). If you need to save space and money, get an airbed. :)

@TerrellWSmith
8 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Philip. I think your sleeve (or bag) idea is a good one. It would make putting it on easy. I found when it rains hard, the screens stick to the window glass, then when the window is opened after the rain, it pulls away the screen. The bag might help prevent that. I'm working to make awnings, so the windows can stay open all the way even in a heavy rain.
@TerrellWSmith
8 жыл бұрын
What happens to your screen bag in heavy rain? Does it leak? Because with a bag, you've got material running under the seal between the door and the frame. Does the netting tend to stick to the glass on both sides when it gets wet? Then what happens when you roll the window up or down? And I would guess that a bag, with two layers of netting, cuts the ventilation significantly - do you notice that?
@wewilllearn
8 жыл бұрын
I have not experienced a heavy rain. I do not expect a leak. Even if there was one, the pressure of the seals and the thinness / inabsorbance of the material should limit any leaking to a drip or two. The other side of this is that the bag can be removed with a simple one step motion.
@TerrellWSmith

Thanks. I watched it, and yes, the screens slip on and off very nicely. I still would like to know how well they keep the water out in a heavy rain. My experience was that during a heavy rain, water spit into the car so much I was getting wet, and had to close the windows in the middle of the night. Your screens are for the front windows, mine are for the back windows, because I want the fresh air where my head is. I made awnings, but have not yet tried them in a heavy rain.

What's your MPG like with everything full?
@TerrellWSmith
8 жыл бұрын
Thanks, that's a great question! The Prius gets great MPG, but because it's dependent on battery as well as gas, outside temperature makes a huge difference (as does tire pressure, driving style, going uphill toward or downhill away from mountains, and as you are asking, load). My last trip from Wisconsin to Colorado, with the Prius really, really full, I got 47 MPG (44 MPG to the Rockies, 50 MPG from the Rockies, which is more downhill, plus the food had been eaten, so the load was less. And maybe the wind was behind me?) I generally average 45-47 MPG over the year (in the cold Wisconsin winter, the battery is less effective, so MPG drops down). Over the lifetime of my Prius so far (65,200 miles), my average is 45.5 MPG. I know others get better MPG, but they work at it, or live in warm climates, or something!

@TessaHill22
8 жыл бұрын
I've got some tips on that since I just sewed 2 pocket screens using 1. white mosquito netting - note to self next time is to use a ribbon on top of the fabric (and maybe the bottom too) to sew them together. What a sewing machine mess with the needle not liking that material (could be the seamstress' lack of skill too!) and 2. the black no-see-um screen from Lowe's, which was very easy to sew and looks much better on the window. I'll use your magnet tape idea to hold down the bottom outside edge and probably some blue painters tape on the inside edge for a double barrier. :)
@TerrellWSmith
8 жыл бұрын
I like the sewn pocket method except that in a downpour, the netting tends to stick to the glass, so when the window is opened again, it pulls the netting. Plus the double netting cuts down ventilation some. My recent project requires that the top of the door be available for hangers, so a "pocket" doesn't work. I've made awnings which fit nicely, and keep the rain off while the windows are wide open. Once I have time, I'll make a new video to show how it's done.

Not having a fridge is something I've looked into and wish I had. Unfortunately, the real refrigerators (which can freeze things) use a lot of energy, and the thermoelectric coolers cool to only 40 degrees below the surrounding temperature, which, in a car, might be 90 degrees and higher! Which isn't cool enough to store food safely. As long as you're traveling, a fridge might work. It's when you're camping that's a problem. Solar would need to be a large array to capture enough energy. So until this gets worked out, I use a traditional cooler and buy block ice every two days or so as needed.

You'd be surprised how useful I've found it. My daughter came with me one year, and brought her Jetboil stove. We had a race to see who could boil water the fastest. It was close. Making soup (right in the bowl, so no clean up), cooking a rice packet (in 90 seconds!), baking a potato (try that on a stove - Yes, you can bake a potato in a fire, wrapping it in foil and waiting a very long time), etc., a microwave is great. Yes, there are things you don't want to do in a microwave (S'Mores anyone?), but for a lot of things, it's really great. You might say this is not "camping," and you're right, it's "Prius camping." :)

What year is the prius?

Thanks for asking: 2010. Note that the newest Prius today has back seats which do not lay down flat with the trunk deck, so there is a difference between the folded down back seats and the deck in the trunk area - it's not flat. The newest Prius also relocated the 12v battery to under the hood, instead of under the trunk area deck. So now it's not easy to hook up an inverter like I show here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/rrCCunavr3yIapg The battery under the hood gets splashed with water, road salt and grime, and probably won't last as long. And the new Prius Prime has no rear window wiper - which is bad for those of us who live in climates where it rains and snows. What were they thinking? I love the 2010. (A number of the following years retained the same design before they changed things.)

Good to know. I've been looking at '10's but they and the '11's got Lots of complaints about excessive and mysterious engine oil consumption - like a quart every thousand miles of expensive synthetic. Neither Toyota nor the dealers nor thousands "fixes" have led to any useful info or resolution beyond putting up with it. Got any helpful comments along those lines? Thanks in advance.

Laurel, this is the first I've heard about it. I change my oil only at the recommended 10,0000 mile marks, have had synthetic since day one, and have never added any oil between changes. The 2010 is basically unchanged for several years after, so I'd guess if excessive oil consumption is a problem, it would affect later years as well. Maybe it's a matter of high mileage? Poor driving style? I have no idea. My 2010 has only 75,390 miles on it.

www.carcomplaints.com/Toyota/Prius/ was my info source. Perhaps I stumbled upon a poor source. That would be good news.

Any car will use more oil as it gets older. Those complaining may have driven hard, or not changed it on schedule, or who knows what? Here's the site to check: priuschat.com A check on oil consumption discussion is here, but you can do your own search: priuschat.com/threads/oil-consumption-2010-prius.171192/
