I am a huge fan of the Varia. I won’t ride on the road without it. But, even though it gets universal praise, I think every mention of it omits an important detail: by itself, the Varia is just a countdown to a possible collision. In order for the Varia to be truly game-changing for your safety, you need a mirror. The Varia tells you when to check that mirror so you know whether a car is giving you room.

Front mechs are here to stay. The more gears the better, even more so for beginners, it's just a matter of setting up the proper gear range. 2x has about 17 to 18 effective speed compared to 12 in 1x; if you go di2 it's actually lighter than 1x due to the shorter hanger arm and smaller cassette. the cassette is way cheaper to replace. The chain is always aligned in 2x compared to almost always cross-chained in 1x. The main inconvenience for all these advantages is switching complexity and another thing to break.

2:59 I've got to differ. I built my do-it-all car-replacement road bike with 1x11 after drinking the kool-aid such as Nic's selling here, but how is it the case that there's no cross-chaining with 1x drivetrains? Like, aren't you basically always cross-chaining with 1x except in the middle of the cassette? My experience was (with 1x11 44t/11-46t - so imo excellent range overall, but big gaps) on a road bike, both the top and bottom gears felt noticeably less efficient - less smooth, more gritty. Current 2x12 has a similar maximum and minimum gear setup, but feels _much_ better and not having such extreme gaps between gear ratios is really nice. I don't race but I do delivery and commute on the bike; for either use-case there's no way I'm going back to a 1x unless there's some newfangled chains that are specifically designed to flex (a lot) laterally while still being just as efficient. If you do as Nic seems to suggest and go electronic 1x on a road bike, you've paid a $1000+ premium for a much less functional product than a mechanical 2x one. If we buy this "it's simpler" argument, anyone not racing ought to just ride lightweight single-speeds; for me, road bike 1x is the worst of all worlds. I just don't see where the difficulty actually is in setting up a modern front mech; they're dead simple and work great already.

I find that 9 speed is the maximum window for cassette width in order to not have significant crosschaining effect in 1x systems. Wish I could say the same about tubeless plugs. In reality though, they rarely fixed my leaky tubeless tires reliably - be it on the gravel bike or the road bike. So much misunderstanding in the comments about 1x groupsets. For those naysayer that have never ridden them, please check out the actual gear ratios you get on your bikes: You'll find that there is overlap and duplication in 2/3x group sets and that you hardly miss out at all on the most commonly required gears with a 1x groupset. My 1x is actually lower geared and easier up hills than my 3x and I never find myself wishing I had an in between gear. Where some of you might find you miss out, if anywhere, is with slightly bigger gaps at the top end but let's face it, most of us only use those gears when caning it downhill.

Still gonna disagree on the front mech part... 2x or heck 3x is the way to go for a beginner if the terrain is hilly or you carry a lot of weight. Or if you are on a budget In my case putting a big ish rig in the front would make me run that nice smooth 80rpm on the flat but wouldn't allow me to climb very well (execpt putting a full dessert plate in the back put that ain't cheap if you want good gear repartition). A smaller one would make me spin out on the flat... But climb well

I have been working on bikes professionally for more than four decades. A Park Tool folding hex key?! I almost never use one. I don't have one in my on-the-bike repair kit. Single hex keys are just plain better, preferable Wera or Wiha.

I found Silca Sealant on a road set-up pretty poor. It didn't plug a 5mm slit, nor a weeping hole. When I opened up the tyre to repair it from the inside all the fibre pieces had clogged in one place rendering the sealant useless. Oh, and you have to pop the tyre off the rim to use it. That's mess I don't need. Try milKit. It has fibres within the sealant, but as it's a little bit thicker the fibres are held within the solution evenly. It's also synthetic latex, so it doesn't dry and washes with water. With milKit I don't need to add air for ~ 2 weeks on the commuter bike. It's the best sealant I've used.

1x nope, cyclist age, and hills get harder. I agree internal cabling will keep you employed. 28 mm on road perfect, ride tubeless even better. Never ride in the rain, still a mechanical man, no batteries required on mechanical, all those tools way to expensive for the home mechanic. Radar, just turn your head and you will see traffic.

Bags on bikes makes them ever so much more livable. I really dislike crap in my jersey pockets, so I sewed up a frame bag for my road bike. Tools and spares live in the bottom permanently, and the top portion can handle a water bottle and a burrito thermos for cold rides, or to water bottle for warm rides. A top tube bag keeps snacks, phone, and wallet handy. I get looks and comments, but will never go back.

About position one. Better choice is Bike 7 pro wax. If you try, you never come back to the regular "oil" lube in dry/wet weather. 1x is a serioulsy good deal. Already i waiting for a Deckas narrow wide chainring and i use traditional Sora 2x9. I hate trimming. I live in a flat region and 1x is blessing also in my bike for special dirty jobs, cleaning never was so simple

I really dislike internal cabling, especially when they route Bowden cables around tight bends, around the stem and steerer, it just causes premature wear and tear and makes the cable performance worse, whilst at the same time it creates the illusion of performance because people equate aesthetics with performance.
@yonglingng5640

If you're talking about only integrated internal routing, yes, I don't like it too and I'm saying this as someone who's capable of working on it, all of my work with this configuration (ex. one-piece cockpit installation) were done solo. Regular internal routing is where I draw the line.

A truck being heavy needs 8/12/16 CLOSE RATIO gears. Heavy people riding with others not so heavy do not go 1x. For those who understand gear inches: As a 100kg (fit) rider in a very hilly area if I want to keep up with younger and much lighter riders I do not want more than 5 inches change between 60 and 100 inches. 2x can do this and if you use a 12 up cassette (Campag you see) you can cross chain 34/12 perfecly OK. On a positive note, well shot, well presented videos and a mechanic who kows his stuff and doesn't wear black gloves!
