Product Review Athearn HO SD40R SP - Speed Lettering!
EMD’s six-axle 3000 horsepower SD40 locomotive was first produced in the mid-1960s, an improvement over its previous SD35 model. SP took delivery of its first SD40s in 1966.
The SD40s proved more reliable than their larger SD45 cousins, which shared the same frame and wheelbase.
In 1980 and 81, SP rebuilt 79 of its SD40s into SD40R units. These locomotives had their electronics replaced with Dash-2 components, and many other parts were completely overhauled. Some of the units even got a Dash-2 style water sight glass on the engineer’s side of the long hood.
The rebuilt SD40Rs proved more reliable than the non rebuilt SD40s, and were used system wide on the SP.
In the 1990s, some SD40Rs were repainted in SP’s speed lettering scheme, including my unit, 7303. Many lost their oscillating lights and some gained ditch lights around the same time.
SP lost three of these units to wrecks, but the rest survived until the UP merger in 1996. Most of the units were sold off between 1997 and 2002.
In the late 1980s SP 7303 was one of the units to be repainted in the failed SPSF merger scheme. When it was repainted gray and scarlet, it retained its red number boards with Santa Fe style numerals.
Athearn's HO scale model of SP 7303 has many of the 1990s-era Southern Pacific features discerning modelers want, like the split battery box doors, lack of rear number boards, and plated over oscillating lights.
This model train is good right out of the box. Advanced modelers could improve the looks with some aftermarket details.
As usual, Dan evaluates the model train's packaging, prototype accuracy, paint & detail, and how well it operates and complies with applicable standards.
