The 6 speed shifts just like in a car. It’s not until you get into a old 9 speed Eaton or a 10 speed that they become un synchronized and have to be shifted like a real big truck. Those have to be double clutched or floated at just the right time because it’s not synchronized. Cars and 6 speeds are totally different transmissions from the truck 10 speeds and up.

A glaring error in this otherwise good video, is that you should always rev match all down shifts. This transmission is synchromesh, so you do not need to rev match to complete the downshift, BUT, after the shift you will let the clutch out and burn it. There is no need for a professional driver to burn the clutch when down shifting. Always rev match your downshifts ! Your boss will be very pleased when his clutch lasts much longer.

even with synchro-mesh trans, double clutching on the downshifts will, with practice, allow even more efficient rev-matching and thus even less clutch burn.

Some men here told about revmatching. Sorry, but actually revmatching here is not so important and necessary. Truck's clutch is pretty hard. Imagine the load on it when a heavy truck starts uphill - it is very huge but clutch does not catch in fire, it is designed for it. And when you proceed at 900 rpm and downshift one gear, release clutch pedal, and clutch disk raises engine to 1400 rpm - it easily overcomes engine resistance. Compare those two quantity of load and you understand - revmatching saves your clutch miniscularly. It is much more safe for driver, when its right leg implements full control over the brake and also no-revmatching uses desireable engine braking. Also truck's revmatching can stress transmission too, because if you release clutch too earlier after blip the throttle - you will make a punch ahead, if you do it too slow - you will sway transmission ahead-astern. Even German ZF16 gearbox manual tell the same way as in this video.

@n.mcneil4066
Жыл бұрын
Yes, very important. If you downshift a synchronized transmission at too high a speed it will go into gear sometimes with tragic results. I saw a clutch disc destroyed (school bus) because it had been shifted from 4th to 2nd at highway speed. I also saw a car (60's 4 on the floor hot rod) with floated valves from being shifted from 4th to 1st under similar conditions. If you attempt to downshift a non synchro to a gear that will be higher than the governed speed of the engine it just won't go. On a long downgrade this can result in a runaway.

MrWill1985 every 6 speed I drove in a truck you shifted just like a car. It’s synchronized. It’s not until you get to a 10 speed Eaton that things are a lot different. They have no synchronize which is why they have to be shifted at precise speeds and rpm. And no you don’t have to double clutch a 6 speed, just shift like a car. 10 speed and up you can double clutch of float gears

MrWill1985 when I was a rookie we were taught to shift a 10 speed Eaton at 1500-1600 rpm. After you learn you don’t pay much attention to it. You go by sound and feel. It’s second nature. However if you get into a smaller truck like a lumber truck or something they shift at a higher rpm because the engine is smaller. So it will have a different rpm range. But the typical semi tractor is 15-1800 for the sweet spot. But trust me after you learn you will never have to pay attention to it...you know by the sound where your shift points are
@JohnnyRebKy
4 жыл бұрын
MrWill1985 cars and 6 speed truck will shift anywhere you want. Just clutch at shift. Big trucks you can’t do that because they are non synchronized and will grind gears. The trans and engine speed must match or they simply won’t shift into gear. Cars and 6 speed trucks will shift into gear at any speed or rpm. It may be the wrong gear but it will shift into that gear regardless. Can’t do that with 10 speeds and up. They simply will not shift into the gear period and will grind. A synchronized car 6 speed or sync truck 6 speed will never grind the gears, they go into any gear as long as clutch is pressed in. 10 speeds you don’t even need to clutch to shift, we call it floating gears. When the engine and transmission are at the right rpm range you can simply float it into the next gear with no clutch. But If you miss the sweet spot it will loudly grind and refuse to go in. Cars and 6 speed you clutch and it always goes in because it’s synchronized

@SternDrive

@@jong5722 This is a general rule for all manual transmissions. I drive manual transmission cars only for 50 years. You do not ever coast with the clutch depressed. This is a common poor driver mistake. You will burn the clutch if you depress it each time you need to slow down. To make a normal stop, you simply apply the brakes right until the RPM is down to or close to idle. Never before. The only time you will depress the clutch first is if you need to lock up the brakes. New and green drivers are clutching away too much in traffic and their clutches burn prematurely. Brakes are for slowing. Not clutches.

What ever happened to rev-match downshifting?! Even if he insists upon granny-shifting, it doesn't take a helluva lot of effort to blip the throttle as you engage the lower gear and release the clutch pedal. I do either single (granny) or double based upon the specific conditions and the specific vehicle I'm in, but I never downshift without rev-matching unless I've managed to slow sufficiently where it's not required, but 99% of the time, there is at least some degree of throttle input desired prior to the clutch plate re-engaging with the engine's flywheel, unless of course you actually enjoy destroying your vital components...
@callofdutyguy9

Johnson Steele there is no point in rev matching. This is a synchronized transmission and improper rev matching can damage your synchros anyway.
@SternDrive
6 жыл бұрын
Johnson Steele You are correct. You should always rev match any downshift, or you will wear your clutch out prematurely. However it is a synchro transmission, so if you are lazy you do not need to rev match. I drive a 13 speed crash gear box and I always rev match up and down shifts. You have to. In my 6 speed car I always rev match all downshifts and up shifts. When cold, I also double clutch into 2nd gear, because it is a big jump, and I like my transmission and clutch to last the life of the car.
@SternDrive

@@callofdutyguy9 You are wrong. Always rev match any manual transmission down shift. This is not to do the downshift. It is synchronized as you say, but after completing the down shift you will burn the clutch when you let it out. Do that for each down shift and your boss will not be pleased with your premature clutch wear. This is a common rookie mistake in cars and trucks. This is why my clutch last over 100,000 kilometers and other people burn them in a year or two.
