I decided to make a joiner's mallet for more delicate work. The oak mallet head weighs ~7 oz (~200g) it is filled with lead disks. The handle is made from an old ash broom handle. The handle is inlaid with epoxy mixed with iron and brass powder. The finish is 3 coats of shellac. Be sure to checkout all the great joiners mallet videos on youtube. Project 9.
Joiner's mallet dimension, 13.5" overall length. I made the mallet handle longer so I can greater force control. The mallet head is 1.25" in diameter, the head length is ~4". One side of the mallet head is faced with leather, the other side is faced with elm. Elm is a good wood for mallets because it is resistant to splitting. I decided to make the facing of the mallet head replaceable.
The inscription is a parody of another famous phrasing.
