HI, thanks for that. You have clearly explained to me how the electric system on my Kea Nomad Sprinter motor home works which Kea did not do. The reason I looked for your video is that the charger seems to have failed (no light, looks dead) after less that 2 years and I am now in a quandary of what to do next. Solar still copes well and remote indicator shows voltage but nothing else - even with no power showing on main unit. Looks like a need a new main unit as with fridge, TV, lighting. awning motor etc just solar may not be enough. If I can keep remote indicator and same wiring which looks fairly well embedded in the main unit that would be good but the way that Kea have installed this is mind boggling - would never have made aeroplanes! ....Partner of C

The remote control panel wiring uses a fairly standard flat 8 conductor cable to connect to the main unit with RJ45 plugs. So the cable may be compatible with other brand chargers. Good luck. Cheers Tim

@@timterry8714 Thanks yeah got all that. Presently looking for best price for a same/same replacement and deciding whether to fit it myself or get an electrician. I am not sure if the replacement charger comes with all the fitted wiring. If so I will have a duplication of wiring. If so, my plan is to use the same remote and lead that is in there and also the temperature compensation lead which both just plug in/out at the back of the charger. Then just disconnect the AC off the dead charger and + and - leads off the battery that are from the dead charger and connect new AC and leads onto battery. I think this will work. One way or the other I need a working charger as I rely on battery for TV, lights, awning motor, fridge, stove fan, toilet flush, & water pump even though solar does an amazing job ... Partner of C

The remote head wont suit a different brand charger John, only the cable may be compatible. There are generally no cables supplied with AC chargers as they dont know what to supply so there will be just screw terminals for the + and - supply. Cheers Tim

@@timterry8714 Thanks again. If no cables then will have to use those already there. Or the auto electrician will - looks like a job for a pro. The one in there looks like the cables are hard wired into the charger except temp and remote. Checked the prices for a replacement Projecta charger and there is an amazing difference in range from $259 used once Gumtree, $331 new Sparebox, $499 new Outback Equipment, $546 Repco then onwards and upwards. It will be interesting what price my auto electrician comes up with.

@@johnmcqueen5721 Final Report. What my auto electrician came up with was a brand new charger on warranty. Thanks to S and K Auto from Blaxland everything is now fine and I suspect the latest chargers have a longer life. They do have a fan and I guess would still be subject to overheating. So I am only going to turn it on when I think I need it to charge the battery as the solar takes care of most things most of the time.

I had to buy a new charger for my new van which now has a lithium based DC system and have purchased a Victron 30A unit which has a lithium profile. It was significantly less costly than the Projecta IC2500L and slightly better output. It works really well.

Projecta Intelli Chargers use a Voltage Sensing Wire (within the charge cables), and if cut or modified (anderson plug) it will cause issues. This happened to me recently, and to fix it all I had to do was to unsheath some of the voltage wire to make sure there is a connection. I also recommend soldering connections instead of crimping.

Thanks for the vid. Great explanation.I have this unit in my motorhome and so far have had no issues. Do you know if solar panels can be connected to this unit to charge the batteries also? Or would I have a separate unit for solar? There doesn't seem to be other boxes near it.
@timterry8714
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Angelo, no it wont charge the batteries from Solar as it is purely a AC mains charger. Also its not a bad idea to have distributed chargers in that if the charger fails you have neither mains or solar charging available to you. I now have separate Mains, Solar and vehicle chargers in the caravan. Part of the reason for separate solar and vehicle charging is that the MPPT solar charger (which is part of the Projecta IDC25 vehicle charger) carries with it significant overhead in internal power consumption (greater than 500 milliamps is used by the charger to run its internal electronics) which is fine if you have lots of solar feeding it. I have a single folding 300 watt panel charging the batteries via a dedicated Epever solar controller which only consumes about 8mA so it really helps recovery on overcast days to be able to harvest all available solar.

Hi Peter, no I don't think it does show anything if the power is off but don't quote me on that. Just remember if your buying a new charger make sure it has a lithium profile as you probably will be replacing AGM with Lithium as the price is similar these days plus all the other advantages of weight and capacity. I just messaged a friend that's out camping atm as he has a projecta so will let you know soon. Yes my friend confirmed it does display the battery voltage at all times AC power or not

Hi Tim, thanks for your vid. I have an IC1500 in my AVIDA 2013 MH. It’s original CBE charger died, so I replaced with the IC1500. My AVIDA manual says that the CBE charger trickle charges both the “house” battery and the cranking battery (the latter to keep the cranking battery from going flat if you are parked in a caravan park for say 6 months). When the auto electrician installed the Projecta, he made sure the house battery is being charged, but did nothing to trickle charge the Cranking battery. There seems to be a debate in the MH Owners forums that charging the cranking battery in addition to the House battery from the Projecta is not very likely. Do you have an opinion on that? Could my MH “How to Guide” be fibbing to me? Thanks, GRM
@timterry8714
2 жыл бұрын
The cranking battery is charged at a lower voltage than the house battery so I agree that the charger should not do both. The house battery is an AGM requiring charging to 14.4volts while the cranking battery is usually only charged to 13.8volts. I wouldnt do it. Often the information in the owners manuals is broadly taken from auto-electricians without a full understanding of the different battery technologies/chargers, etc - that is I assume until recently - hopefully the knowledge base has improved in the last few years.

You dont need to switch it off after the batteries are charged. This is a multistage charger and should really be left on to maintain the batteries correctly in the the case of an AGM (lead acid battery) which I assume is what is installed if this charger was supplied. In fact you need to leave it on as most equipment runs from 12V and not 240V such as the lighting, water pump, gas stove igniter, fridge electronics, etc., so its normally expected to leave the power supply on at all times.

Hi Darren, not sure what you need to see in regard to the AC mains power cord. It is just plugged into a 240V AC power outlet located adjacent to the power supply. The Projecta was a replacement for a CTEK charger that previously charged the battery and was installed by the caravan manufacturer. Let me know if you need something more specific.
