Sold my house in Boca Raton and moved here 6 years ago. My 22nd move and have lived in metro areas of NYC, LA, Philly, Miami, and Atlanta…DSM is my fave never looking back! I will add that I am a “party cyclist” and this place is a blast!!! But property taxes are high. I think it’s bc most other places they only do a re-assessment when a house is sold/bought. So in Boca my neighbors bought 10 years before me and had the same floor plan as I did but paid $4k less a year. Here they assess every two years!

The crime and dirtiness is basically non-existant here compared to many other states. BUT to be 100% honest, we have had tornados every couple years, fortunately 95% of homes have basements and there are TONS of warning signs that they are coming so there is almost always plenty of time to take cover. I would have never said Des Moines has a race problem. I've lived in Iowa City for 20 years and visit Des Moines often for work and personal reasons. Our 19 yr old son moved there recently and got a sales job where he has to knock doors. His first week on the job he had police called 3 times. His boss couldn't believe it.

Just found this. I am former military and I moved 2 years ago from upstate NY. People here are VERY nice and helpful. Food is delicious at restaurants. Art museums/galleries are beautiful. Farmer's market is awesome. Cons: My rent downtown is way too high, $1,238 and i was shocked and no, it's not a luxury apartment at all. 😮 I am single, straight, attractive and there are virtually NO good single men to date. 😢 The men are quiet and guarded and do not approach women at all. And nope i do not want to go online dating, Did that for years everyone just wanted a pen pal. For economy, YES it's great for millennials. Not for part time jobs for a retired 52 year old like myself. I've been very disappointed in the singles scene and high rent. I probably should've bought a house. The only people dating are the college students, tons of young people, but not great for older people like myself. I'm super isolated and lonely. And SAD. Looking to move overseas now and this will be a home base i guess. 😞

My wife has a potential job opportunity in Ames; Des Moines would be a potential real estate option for us since options in and around Ames are limited. Here are two questions I have: 1. We are a dual EV household, including one truck. In Utah or Cali, we’re a dime a dozen. In West Texas, I got keyed, coal rolled, and nearly run off the road by bubbas in jacked-up dualie F-250’s. It’s apparently a trend in conservative politics to attack EV owners. Low crime is a great start, but do you think we could anticipate any hostility on this front in a more conservative midwestern area? 2. Do you know anything about the daycare situation? My wife and I both work and have very young twins. Some cities have better options for child care than others; we’ve had to deal with wait lists as long as 15 months in Utah. Any info on this front would be greatly appreciated.

I grew up originally from New York City. Pros- A lot cheaper for a small to medium size city. Des Moines, IA is surrounding by growing suburbs with a lot of new developments. Cons-Night life here in Des Moines does end quite early. For families its a great city to live in. There's a few areas in Des Moines you want to avoid: Southside of Des Moines. Nothing there really beside the Airport and Blank Park Zoo. Otherwise your better off going to West Des Moines, Ankeny, Altoona-(Outlet Mall, Adventureland theme park). Des Moines does have the largest State Fair.

Just skip to the end... I type and talk too much. I'll be honest. I'm 63 and this will be my last move, Des Moines was one of the last places I would consider. Florida, I still have my shabby chic Jimmy Buffet fueled fantasies. The reality is I have looked for years and what is affordable for me is frankly in all honesty, ghetto. College towns use to be a little secret for affordable. The LAST thing I want is cold weather. But for affordability, air and water stats, populations stats., crime, the list is endless, Des Moine is currently tied for 1st place with Morgantown, WV for me. However Morgantown is starting to see gentrification. And over all an older population works for me. I think I better start looking at heated overalls because cold for these old legs is below 40f. But I grew up in Chicago... I may acclimate again. Thanks for the content. Very informative. I am a renter so unfortunately I can't directly use your help. But I do share a lot on social medias so maybe, indirectly, I steer some business your way.

Yea buddy your list is missing some reality, I moved here from Chicago and I will list some realities about living here in Des Moines. Cost of living, about the same as living in Chicago unless your willing to buy a house way out in the corn fields and drive an hour. The houses are typically old farm houses or great big barndominiums on acres of land. They haven't built up the housing fast enough for the influx of people coming here to work in the data centers that are being built here, that's where the good jobs are at, data centers. There are super high grocery costs here because the whole state seems to be dominated by one grocery chain and they charge whatever they want, and their service sucks, hye Vee. I know this for fact because I drove back to Chicago and price checked and its way high here, a large bag of Pistachios cost 14$ here and only 7$ back in Aurora Illinois. There are only 1 of any other store like Trader Joes or Fresh Thyme so they too charge high prices probably because they bench mark off Hye Vee. The traffic enforcement is predatory, it's got to be a huge source of revenue for the state or city because its crazy enforced. All the major highways are regularly enforced by airplane and their are photo enforced speed traps everywhere. If you want to keep from having your licence suspended after 3 speeding tickets you need a high end radar detector that's bluetoothed to an app to show you where all the photo traps are. There are very boring scenery because every square mile has been bought and fenced off and turned into corn crops so to get any change in surrounding you need to travel up to south Dakota Black hills or back East to the Mississippi river. Every road outside of town is gravel so everything is covered in gravel dust and its hard on your vehicles. It took me a minute to figure out why there are so many car washes, this is why. Registration is very high for vehicles too btw, I drive a cheap 2020 pickup truck worth about 19k and the sticker cost me over 300$. The food scene is not all that great, its adequate but if you're looking for anything really good, you will need to put in effort to find it. I may be spoiled coming from chicago but it seems like everything's mostly pub food and bad pizza, even the BBQ that's supposed to be best in Des Moines is actually mediocre if your been around the country. I think I found only 1 Tapas place and it's not even really Tapas. There are some Indian places but they too are only really average. The Mexican food I've found so far is horrible, bland, swimming in greasy refried beans, like fast food Mexican, they put way too much sugar in everything as well, it's a cheap and easy way to get people to say it was good if its sweet. Things that I found that are good, the sunsets are good and the crime is nothing in comparison to Chicago. The best thing about Iowa is the 2nd amendment support, you can buy suppressors here, and there are plenty of good gun stores and outdoors stores. The fact there isn't a state team is a good thing IMO, I hate organized sports and glad to see the city not wasting huge sums of money supporting a damn baseball team or something. I did see, however In 2023, Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz earned over $7 million, more than twice as much as the next highest-paid state employee, Iowa men's basketball coach Fran McCaffrey, who earned a little over $3 million. Iowa women's basketball coach Lisa Bluder's base salary for the 2023-24 school year was $1 million, disgusting. The medical industry here is OK, not saying it's super great because its not, but I don't think you have to worry about it. Coming from Chicago however, it would have to be something special to impress me. So far going to Unity Point ER they are understaffed and because of that a bit disorganized. I have had the specialist Dr play bass the buck on me, for example my Endocrinologists didn't want to be bothered managing my type 2 diabetes because I don't take the drugs I use my diet so she passed to buck to my PCP but he didn't know anything about it. So then I meet him and tell him that I need him to manage it and I havent had tests done in a year and he says yea , that's a good idea to get those test done, then crickets,... OK, so are you going to put the fucking order in? Yea, I haven't had this experience back in Chicago, my type 2 has always been managed by my Endocrinologist, but I guess there isn't any money in it for her unless Im taking metformin and Glimepiride and all the latest appetite suppressants etc .

The cost of housing and utility's and food, all three are SPECIFICALLY why I am looking to leave Oregon...We can't afford to have a roof over our head, to heat our home and have food in our stomachs....Time to LEAVE! Also, I'm a conservative leaning Libertarian, I vote "republican" but I look for the most libertarian of the republican candidates for every kind of election, so I like that it's a swing state...means we have options, even if there's no term limits for governor. My state has been ruled by 4 citys and hard blue since 1982 and its been a consistent freefall into lawlessness and filth and oppressive costs of living. I'm looking to own my own house, and economic freedom. I'm a car guy that likes to listen to music, watch action movies, ride/collect BMX bikes...and work on my car on my own in the quiet without being bothered I also like to walk or ride the bike to get what I need, I save the car for road trips...So while I am looking for another small town, I need one that has everything close by cause I don't like to leave town often.

Seriously, leave us alone. Go back to the cities you've all already ruined, then abandoned. Also, take a breath between sentences.

You forgot the racism. Lots of racism in the midwest.

@@Livingindesmoines i lived in the midwest, northbrook outside of chicago. I am white and have seen racism quite a bit. I can’t imagine a homogeneous state iowa to be otherwise. Granted i now live in southern California and have seen it here as well.

@@Livingindesmoineswhat would you know about the racism? You’re white, lol. Not trying to be rude but you have no idea when it comes to that. I’ve seen a couple comments on the racism and you’re telling them they’re wrong. What’s up with that

For the cons, you forgot the extreme racism, super high taxes, and hateful people. Let's not forget Des Moines was voted the city with the rudest drivers in the entire country. DART is underused because it takes over two hours to get anywhere on the bus. I was trying to figure out why you have so many untruths in the video. Then I realized why. Obviously, you can't trust a real estate agent to be honest about any area. You are trying to sell a product. You have to stretch the truth to make it look good. Going to a different city, in the middle of a weekday, to show the "slow pace" shows how truthful you are.

You can trust a real estate agent just as much as you can trust some random person on KZitem posting all the things they don’t like that they think the world is out to get them when in reality Iowa is a fantastic place to live, and it shows the number of people that come visit and are blown away by all of the great things that our state has the offer. On the contrary, I also work with people that are looking to sell their houses and I’m happy to work with you if you want to sell your house I promise to get the highest dollar amount possible. There are many states that are better and I have a hard time arguing that Iowa is not that better life for them.
