Live in the very rural Northern Iowa rn, going to college in a month or two for two years and then probably leaving the North Been thinking about picking Des Moines, out of all the bigger cities I've been to its the one that had the nicest people and the one I felt the safest in

I hear that from a lot of people that visit. Yes we have the snobby people, but most experience that the pleasent kind people are the majority!

dm is a good place to be from. its helped me to appreciate the other cities ive lived in. :) I grew up on the east side in the 60's-70s. moved to seattle in the early 80s. i still come back to visit family. but if i had no family in dm id never go back. too hot. too cold . not much to do. most of the classic old restaraunts are gone. its actually expensive for what you get. and for some reason groceries are even more than seattle. i love Hy Vee. wish we had them here. but their prices are at least a dollar more than at safeway in seattle. (and theyre prices are high) not as high as whole foods or qfc, but definitely higher than the premium stores here. doesnt make sense. gouging. the actual cost of living used to be significantly lower than here. not anymore. okay.... a typical home is about 35% more expensive here. but groceries are cheaper. Also it rarely snows if ever here. doesnt get hot. great views. Cannabis..... etc. Iowa just isnt a good value anymore. just my two cents.

Most of the folks who come and live here, come because they have visited and like it.. So interesting that you've not liked it. But I can understand, we can't all like the same things in life!

Perspective, yes Des Moines has a homeless population. Does it make Des Moines bad, I don't agree with you in that statement.

Which neighborhood do you recommend someone to move to who is in their mid to late twenties. Im really into nature and being outside but like being in the loop of the city as well. Thinking about moving to Des Moines, thank you!

Some of the highest property taxes in the country
@Livingindesmoines
Жыл бұрын
It is super interesting that you say this, which is true 1.5-2% of property value. The interesting thing is what those property taxes are used for, AND what other taxes that Iowan's don't pay as much for. Compared to other states that have lower property taxes but have other taxes that make up the difference. State income taxes, property taxes, local taxes... its a HUGE shell game.

Darson knows his city. I’ve been in WDSM since 2006. Our interstate access is incredible, I’m on in 2 min, we pretty much own I35 and 235 so can get anywhere I need to go in metro in 15 min. Waukee is our friendly competition for development, their parks are next level so we mooch regularly. WDSM much more welcoming to business. Des Moines University is literally moving to WDSM because Des Moines didn’t care enough to help them get a parking garage built at old Grand campus. Iowa is one of few states with central capital served by two hella interstates, I80 and I35 so easy to get here from 90% of state. On the downside Republicans are turning us into the Florida of the Midwest, most recently cutting public school funding to shove money into the pockets of discriminatory conservative Christian private schools, awful. If you live here you either have family here or a good job maybe in insurance or banking although we do get some refugees escaping Chicago city problems too. But overall Iowans are chill, care about each other, good neighbors, relatively affordable cost of living, low crime, virtually no actual traffic delays and lots of smiles and hi from random people. I’ve hosted some foreign visitors and they ask how everyone knows their here and welcomes them. Answer, they don’t, we just all treat each other that way.
