Yes It works! On my PS3 Fat. You forgot to mention the Celsius temperature, I tried with 300°C following your instructions with no success, then tried with 300°C to heat the board and then 600°C on the chips and that's it... worked, thanks for this tutorial, helps me a lot. BTW I didn't use FLUX, just my heat gun and patience (REMEMBER DO NOT TOUCH YOUR CHIPS OR BOARD EVER) Wait about 45min to cool down... :)

Managed to get the shielding apart without having to do any manner of bending you describe in the video at about 2:30. I had to do it twice, probably because I was circling the chips too quickly and not quite long enough. First round was 30 seconds preheat for each side of the board, 90 seconds each chip, and 45-second post-heating cooldown. Second time was 45 sec preheat, 105 sec (1 min 45 sec) for each chip with slower circles, then 45 sec cooldown. It now works fine. Thanks for this vid!

Well I've had this old and already used 40GB PS3 for around 3 years. I got a YLOD on it a few days ago. I disassembled it yesterday and that part at 2:35 was quite tricky for me as well. I wasn't sure I was going to disassemble it totally but ultimately I did. Now I need to buy a heat gun and some thermal paste... I did something similar on a PC years ago and it worked. I'm glad I got it right all by myself, but your video is very helpful at erasing any doubts. Also people should know that laptop hard drives can fit in a PS3. This very 40GB I have actually is a 300GB because I bought a laptop hard drive and it fits. This way you don't have to buy multiple PS3s if you only want more space to store games and data. Also if you get a YLOD your hard drive is STILL good so whatever you do, keep the hard drive and don't throw it in the trash. You can also replace other parts... One thing I'd like to know is: is it possible to manipulate the PS3's fan speed? There are programs on PC that can do that. I'm pretty sure YLODs could be avoided if I there was a way to augment the speed, just a tiny bit, no?

There is software if you are running CFW. However, if you just have a stock PS3, you can buy fan controllers. PS3EZChill is nice, but requires manual adjustments and can lead to further damage.

My cechg01 went ylod two days ago. I couldn't believe it but this actually worked!! Minimal cost for repairs too-- bought a 300w heat gun from RadioShack and was worried at first that the board wouldn't get hot enough. Just added a few seconds more to the reflow time. I also used Arctic Silver Ceramique (also at RS), works well but seems like a much thicker consistency than the thermal compund used in the video. CHECK ALL CONNECTIONS. Those ribbon cables have to be locked in! THANK YOU!!

Thank you for your video Greg.. I noticed that you didn't use liquid flux. I have some, is it recommended to use it? I thought it would be because it assists the solder in "reflowing" should it get to the correct temperature. OR is this video a temporary fix due to heating up specific components so that they come back to life for awhile?
@digitalepisode

Just a note to anyone thinking of trying to reflow/reball with a heat gun. 1. Most important part is to have a temp sensor to check temp at the CPU's. Never get over 220c or you will turn your PS3 into a brick. Now, once you have it stripped down and you think you are ready, go out an buy good liquid solder flux. I use Kester 951 which is cheap and readily available. Even on ebay. Since we at our shop do not do reflows but prefer to reball instead, this is where your job can become a good one or bad one. We use a Bird 5000 and we reball with leaded solder so it never happens again. We actually warranty every ps3 and Xbox that come in for reball for a period of 2 years. Only had a handful come back in the past 5 years and I've done thousands. Literally.

One thing that is being overlooked here (it was briefly mentioned in the video), is static electricity damage. You can build up several thousand volts walking across a carpet (and several other ways, as well). When you then touch a circuit board, it is possible to dump that voltage into the components. They were not designed for that and failure is almost guaranteed. You should ALWAYS ground yourself before touching any modern circuit board with integrated chips.

Its dead otherwise...Seriously, Ive worked on THOUSANDS of electrical items with no grounding strap. You can discharge yourself on any piece of metal. Unless you live in a house filled with carpet, in the driest area or earth, and are working on hi-end components (not DEAD PS3), then by all means ground yourself. But for everyone else, touch something metal BEFORE you touch what you are going to work on.

This was true in the early 1990's and before. There were very expensive chips ($1000+) which were very sensitive and limit in quantity. Today, have a look at the datasheet of almost any chip: They are typically built to withstand electrostatic discharges of 3-15kilovolts. TLDR; modern chips are built to withstand this. Modern chips are commodities.

Heated both sides a little then heated both cpu`s for 2 min each. still heated board from a distance like mentioned and let cool for 30 min . Did remove all thermal compound and re applied arctic silver to cpu and heat sink. cleaned all dust from every part that was dismantled and after reassembly it works great. the fam has been abusing it with netflix, the fan is humming it is running warm as usual and working fine. my conclusion is maybe tear yours down and clear the dust out using these vids before this happens cause the dust builds up around the cpu`s where you can`t clean Anyway thanks for your vids, you helped me huge

Seems legit. This is definitely not the PROPER way to reflow a board. First of all you left the thermal pads on the board whilst heating it.... and you didn't use any flux so you basically dried the solder even more and it also looked like you didn't really clean the chipsets properly.

***** It works, that's a fact, he's just remelting the tin. But it's not a proper reflow, to do it correctly you need a reflow oven and you need to add flux to the board to create "new" clean connections. Doing it like this makes the tin extremely brittle and can cause it to break over time at lower temperatures than that broke it originally. Luckly for me i'm at the university and we have a reflow oven and an abundance of flux, so it's time i fix my ps3 that broke back in 2011. I bought a new one but my brother has it at home. Now that i moved out why not fix the old one, i have everything i need to do it the PROPER way.

@Greg Smith, thanks for uploading this video. After I reflowed the board, my ps3 is working again. But now it is not capable of loading games/apps that are on the hdd. All I see is a black screen after I try to open them. So I thought it had something to do with the hdd connectors. I took the hdd out, brushed it to get dust out of it, and tried again. For a couple of minutes this worked. But after awhile there was the black screen again. Is it possible I overheated the cpu and gpu during reflow?

It's OK to heat up the back of the board, hold the heat gun about 3-4" away from the board & not directly 1/2" or the reflow process will start and could damage the board and chips when flipping it over. You also want to let the board cool down properly by running the heat gun apprx 6" on low over the front side of the board for 30-45 seconds after you re-flowed the board. This will allow the board to cool down properly and the results will be better if you just let it cool at room temperature

The best thing about this is that I got flux and done just the GPU, heated just the GPU up and I had it running for 6 pure years and its still running! Most errors are mainly just the GPU due to its poor build quality :) I would not really bother with the other parts just in-case you actually damage or re do other solder balls that could cause more issues... :) Sadly my CECHM03 console actually has a defected GPU so it cannot be reballed or anything unless I actually get a new GPU :(

I always Delid mine. The paste under the RSX cover, when it dries out, even with NEW paste on top of the cover, the fan will still kick into JET ENGINE speeds. Delid, clean, reflow, replace paste on chip and use THERMAL GLUE on the 4 chips in the corner, attach the RSX cover plate, make sure you wiggle it back and forth slightly because it will go RIGHT BACK to where its supposed to be, you can feel it fall into place. Put new paste on top of RSX cover and CPU cover. I DO NOT delid the CPU. It's a pain in the butt and you can damage it very easily. There are tutorials our there but they are all people using hand made tools to CUT the glue around the entire chip and it's a pain. CPU very rarely is the issue anyhow. Cheers!

Well here is the problem.The solder balls of the bga are cracking because they are lead free solder which is causing many problems in modern electronics.The best way is to remove the chip and replace with new balls of leaded solder,but if you want to reflow,to remelt the existing ones you need to apply flux under the chip to help the solder to melt and to form a new conjuction and all the balls have to melt simultaneously.So,a heat gun is impossible to do this,it causes only board bending and solder expansion which only temporarily fixes the problem for some hours or days and it is not a professional solution in noway.

I have a ps3 which has been previously repaired by someone else (not sure what was wrong). It was fine for a few months, now it's overheating (fan blowing like crazy) and switches itself off within few minutes from switching on. Should I just try replacing paste and thermal pads first or do I need to reflow it as well? As I said it doesn't switch off and go to yellow light straight away, it stays on for a few minutes and then overheats. Oh, and thanks for the vid, worked with my other ps3 :-))
@rooster3592

For sure start with replacing the thermal paste. You would only need to reflow if the unit was unable to start at all indicating that one or more of the solder joints are bad. But your system is turning on indicating the the solder joints are good but then over heating. Replacing the paste should fix your issues with no need to heat the board at all.

I've heard this before but people end up MELTING their chips. The heat gun allows for smooth and accurate heating of the specific areas that need to be done. Oh and the first time I did it and it worked....for 5 mins. Basically stripped. Some heat. And applied. But I'm going to try it more in depth

Do you need to apply some flux to the gpu/cpu before hitting it with the heat gun?

good question, can anyone answer? does the flux actually do anything?

I did not apply anything to the CPU or GPU, I just made sure it was level, I heated up the motherboard like showed in the video keeping everything level, then I focused the head on the CPU and GPU for one minute each give or take a few seconds, then I let it cool down very slowly like he mentions in the video as well. Then after letting it sit for at least 30 minutes, I reassembled the PS3 adding the thermal paste exactly like he shows it making sure it gets the whole surface of both chips, and it works like a charm, you would never guess it had the YLOD...

Question -- I have reflowed PS3s multiple times on my 60GB and have succeeded. I am trying to fix my friends 40GB and im failing miserably. Tried 3 times now and same RLOD. This time the only thing im not doing is applying thermal paste because all i need is a 5-10 minute up time to quickly retrieve photos from the HDD. Not applying thermal paste should not be an issue right? and considering no improvements observed ( not even extra several seconds) after this heat gun fix. Please advise, thank you

The thermal paste shouldn't matter. If it's not powering on right away, then it's something else.

Without thermal paste, the chip can overheat in a matter of seconds. Never start up ANY console or computer without thermal paste. I have been building PCs for over 20 years and you would be amazed how fast you can fry a chip without it.

@@Runslik3Wind I was literally about to try this with a hairdryer, but Im really contemplating just sending it to ps3 specialist and spend the $140 amd have it done right

Tried this method on my CechM03 80GB PS3 and didn't work so went back and tried the method I know and it worked.

Heat guns are only about $20, so it's not that bad. That being said, hairblowers only get to around 130* F, whereas a heat gun goes from around 500* - 950*. You need that heat to make this reflow properly, but there are videos on youtube about using a hairdrier in its stead.

Don't understand why you're heating the chips to reapply paste.. been doing this to pc cpu for years and just put the paste on cold, after cleaning the cpu and fan/cooler contact. I also agree with post below, I put a pea sized blob in middle and then push the contacts together.

NOT PROPER WAYTO REFLOW DO NOT DO THIS WITHOUT KNOWING TEMPERATURE READING OF CHIP AND PROPERLY PRE HEATING THE MOTHER BOARD... 1°c per second max anything over this WILL FRY YOUR GPU/CPU. Not only that but i guarantee the board he heated with a heat gun and un-even heating is warped and will most likely be destoyed when re installed into the case... THERE IS NOTHING PROPER ABOUT THIS! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

You’re right. You can even see the board warp at 8:51
