Finally, the only good method for reballing. You will find a lot of videos with a bit of reflow titled as "reballing", but this is actually the only one in which the job is done properly!

This is much better than the one I saw of a guy reballing a chip by using a pair of tweezers... Seriously, just buy a mask and jig.

Several Technical Questions: -when removing the stencil, I assume there is enough flux to hold the balls securely, esp. since you remove the RSX "chip" from the jig. - Do you reuse RoHS or switch to lead-based solder balls? Mix? -How well does non RoHS balls bond to the RoHS board and chip pads? I realize your still getting more flexibility with the lead, but do you get joints likely to crack at these points? Temp differential of the 2 different solders perhaps etc? -your heating iron for the reflowing at the chip install is a press mount? I imagine the pressure applied is critical? too much and it would press the solder out too thin, causing bridges or less thickness? As the balls melt, the space is reduced. On the factory install, the space has hard adhesive on each corner of the chip. (Red colour) How was this removed? It is not replaced, so assume not required? Was it used as a shim/spacer, or to prevent micro-cracks in joints from movement/expansion etc? Not required with lead solder? Other than pressure, is there a shim or method to monitor how much solder is required for correct spec, .or is it 'self leveling' so to speak..will simply flatten out 'flush' when fully heated? -the RSX chip is often done. The other processor is not shown re-balled as much. Is this needed for RSOD etc? Do most shops do both automatically? Realize this is an outdated PS3 post, but like answers for technical interest. Firstly this is a very nice video of how to reball a PS3 correctly... Anyone thinking of doing this then it takes alot of practice and some expensive equipment to do correctly as in the video. New equipment to do this your looking at atleast £1000 on getting a decent bga, then atleast £150 on a decent soldering iron and then around £200 on extras like the chip station, stencils, flux, paste, screw drivers, solder balls etc etc.Or just give it to someone who already does it for £40-£50 a machine lol.

Thanks for showing reballing in camera. I've never seen one being done and always wandered if it's something impossible to do. I see it's obviously not, it just requires some extra tools that most people don't have, other than that anyone can do it. It's a shame you reballed the same chip though. Most cases of BGA chip damage are inherit to the chip due to internal warp damage and not the solder balls. Well at least you didn't reflow it and tell it works fine that way.

400 is still a little cool but it may work. At minimum you should have a stencil to put the balls through. The jig itself is very, very handy for lining it up and keeping it aligned since sometimes the stencil can move without you meaning it to. Check them out on ebay, sometimes they aren't too expensive.
