A close up look at the surplus G3 magazines that are available for the PTR 91. I give an overview of both the steel and aluminum mags as well as taking them apart for cleaning. Enjoy! www.robertrtg.com
Ok nerds here is everything you would want to know about G3 magazines. This is what you came here for. Markings: (G3 P) = German HK produced for Pakistan (POF) = Pakistani produced at Pakistani Ordnance Factories arsenal. (G3 adjacent Diamond inside a circle) = German government Rheinmetal manufactured (G3 HK) = German government HK manufactured (Crowned C w/date code) = Swedish Carl-Gustaf (Crowned H w/date code) = Swedish Husqvarna (Crowned HMAK) = Danish made Hærens materielkommando (A stylized EBO that looks like a diamond thing and G3) = Greek EBO gov. Imported to US by Springfield for SAR-8. (AG3 adjacent crowned K) = Norwegian government made by Kongsberg Defense and Aerospace. (G3 adjacent crowned K) = Norwegian made by Konsberg for German Bundeswehr. (G3 FMP) = Portuguese government made by Fabrica Militar de Portugal arsenal. (G3 w/no other markings of any kind) = Potentially Iranian government made. Not common in the west. (G3 EN or RSAF) = British government Enfield made. Youll never find one good luck. (G3 MKE) = Turkish made by Mechanical and Chemical Industry Corporation. May come with Zenith clones. (7.62x51 above a set of letters) = HK manufactured HK91 civilian market magazines. The letters are a date code. (Parkerized steel with no discernible markings of any kind) = Unlicensed magazine from a number of makers. If youre in the US its most likely Korean made by KCI. They are civilian after market magazines. KCI has a reputation for being garbage. Polymer magazines you may find: There are two variants of polymer G3 magazines. Thermold makes poly twenty rounders for the aftermarket and they suck. MKE of Turkey makes translucent amber magazines for the G3 that maybe be made available for Zenith civilian market clones headed to the US market in 2019 but those guns may well ship with metal mags. A handful of the amber MKE mags have been imported into the US in small batches so you may stumble across one of the rare few. Oddball mags you may stumble across: G3 like magazines with a slight curve and smooth sides arent actually G3 magazines. They are Spanish CETME rifle magazines. They are ostensibly the same thing as G3 magazines and will fit and function in G3 rifles. There are also a number of 30 and 40 round G3 magazines floating around. They are aftermarket and consist of one and a half or two whole magazine bodies welded together end to end. They arent particularly reliable and are basically useless if you shoot prone or from a bench. They exist primarily as a novelty. There also exists reduced capacity 10 and 5 round magazines. They are standard magazine bodies that are cut down and refitted for the baseplate. They are typically for the civilian market but were used by some police units. Ten round mags are often seen with PSG1 rifles. Contrary to popular belief HK does NOT manufacture G3 magazines anymore. They officially ended production and are just selling off warehoused new old stock. They dont even operate the tooling anymore. Government date codes, material types, and finishes: Licensed manufactured government magazines excluding Iran or Pakistani will usually include an XX/XX date code. The code represents the month/year of manufacture. I.E. 3/80 represents March of 1980. Governments who participate in STANAG have placed an NSN code along the rear edge of the marked side of the magazine. Its not a serial number its logistics code specific to G3 type magazines for use in shared NATO stockpiles. The NSN will be slightly different depending on country of origin. Magazines were made of two materials steel or aluminum alloy. Steel mags are blued or parkerized. Alloy mags are painted black or anodized black. Steel mags are more durable and the feed lips last longer. Alloy mags are cheaper to mass produce, lighter, and dont rust. Alloy mags were preferred in countries with humid environments like Indonesia. Steel are more common in arid regions. Steel magazines carry a premium over alloys on the civilian market youre looking at probably double the price over alloys for government surplus. Government crests and arsenal proofs: Some licensed manufacturers typically placed some kind of arsenal proof mark stamp on the magazine body somewhere. Usually on the rear spine near the feed lips. Those stamps are unique to each country that accepted it into military inventory. For example Portugal is a shield within a square shield their coat of arms. Norway is their coat of arms shield shape with a number inside. Ect.

So I actually have 3 Rienmetal Magazines, 2 are steel from 1961 and 1962, the other is a paratrooper magazine from 1965. The 4th magazine is a paratrooper magazine from 1966 made by HK for the German Government.

Thanks for the info. I just ordered a 20pk of steel HK mags. Should be interesting to find out which ones I get. The only KCI mags I’ve used are for my Zpap M70 AK and dude, they run flawlessly, all 15 I picked up. I’ve heard people have issues with KCI, but luckily mine run great. Thanks for adding all those markings man 👊

I should say all the mags that failed on me were aluminum. I had the gun for a few months and had to send it back to PTR because it was unreliable. They replaced the bolt head and cocking handle and had it back in a week. Since it has been a lot better. It is reliable provided I do two things, use the HK slap to chamber the first round which I like anyway and use mags I know are in good shape. It works fine if I do these and is AK like with regard to ammo preference. The gun is a tack driver.

Thank you for the support my friend! I feel your pain with the 10 round limit. I moved out of California about 5 months ago. I have been wanting a PTR 91 for a long time and I waited until I moved to get one so that I could get the 20 round mags. It was worth the wait!

So if you are up to the challenge, hk parts sells magazine plugs to convert the 20 round box mags to 10 rounds. While functionality might be lacking, it’ll look like you have a badass rifle without the ugly 10 round mags. The only issue would be purchasing the originals and shipping them to California. Probably will be fine so long as you have the intention of converting them to be Compliant.

I got 8steel mags with my order. The mags were encrusted with all kinds of crap. After spending about an hour each cleaning the first two, I got smart and ran the remaining disassembled mags through the dishwasher. (Don't tell my wife.). The results were very good. These were steel mags so I had to immediately spray them down with Balistol. Ran a cloth over them to remove excess lube and had to use some steel wool to clean some rough spots. Looks awesome now.

Nice! Yeah, one of mine had some leaves and muck down in there. One has a follower that is pretty rusty. Both steel and aluminum clean up and work fine though. Great mags for a great gun! Thanks for stopping by!

Government made G3 magazines are stored in Cosmoline paper for decades. The cosmoline actually sticks to the steel mags pretty badly. My alloy mags had some cosmoline on them but nowhere near as much as steel likes to absorb. It has more to do with steel magazines being parkerized while alloys are normally painted or anodized.

Anyone know where I can find the followers for these? I have 3 cetme mags that get caught up and tilt all the time. I've cleaned them several times and they still do it. I figure the polished followers in these work better and slide easier.

i have a ptr91 sc i modified to a trigger housing from plastic to metal what is your input, i hadn't shot it ever. i tried shooting a 7.62x51 which i heard is possible i pulled the trigger which it went through but the problem is, it got stuck in the chamber does that mean should i stick with 308 which i have tried but would it work i don't want to embarrass myself next time i go shooting. please get to me on this

The rifle should fire both .308 and 7.62x51 without any problems. I don't know why the case would get stuck in the chamber. What kind of ammo did you use?

I know someone stated that the steel mags have a "NATO" proof. It's not. That is Rheinmetall's mark. They made early G3's and that type of mag. NATO's symbol is some version of a rectangle with an "x" and oval inside. Anyway, good vid, great channel. I just saw this in my recommended vids feed.

The steel magazines dont always include a two piece baseplate. One piece baseplates dont have the internal locking plate. The spring just sits on the bottom plate directly.

I'm not sure but I found this page that talks about HK G3 markings. www.mg-42.net/markings.htm I have four steel mags and they don't have the numbers. I have five aluminum and only three have the numbers. They all have different date stamps. The article suggests that they are military "acceptance stamps" and they show up on magazines from different manufacturers, not just HK. I hope that helps!

Pretty sure its the NSN number "national stock number" .
@Lonewolf6565
5 жыл бұрын
Its a national stock number for STANAG. Its not a serial number or an acceptance stamp. Its a logistics code for shared NATO stockpiles. NSN codes are unique designation for a type of item. G3 mags share the same NSN. M16 magazines have an NSN that varies by one digit depending on country of origin. For instance, if a military supply officer were to order one thousand of NSN: 1005-01-561-7200 he would receive one thousand 30 round STANAG spec M16 magazines that are being held in a NATO logistics warehouse. If he were to order 500 of NSN 6135-00-985-7845 he would get 500 24packs of disposable AA batteries.

I didn't mean that you should pay that $50. I was merely pointing out that contrary to your assertion in the video, someone does indeed make brand new mags.

I did not intend to offend you with my comment nor did I assume that you meant that anyone should spend $50 per magazine. I was only giving "my two cents" on the matter. Thank you for taking the time to watch my video and giving feedback. I do my best to be as accurate as possible and welcome any corrections if I make a mistake.

Those are not currently manufactured magazines. HK halted production of G3 and MP5 magazines and began selling their tooling off in the early 90s. The new HK magazines are warehoused new old stock HK91 magazines they stockpiled before production was halted.
