This was the first piece I wrote strictly using a precomposed scale network, a ploy I stole from the music of Steve Reich. There are six harmonic areas based on the chromatically descending tetrachord from A to E, and its harmonization in the chord progression A - E/G# - G - D/F# - F - E-these chords are elaborated into chord scales which all contain the pitch a tritone away from the bass note; the inverted scales based on the descending tetrachord a tritone away (from Eb to Bb) provide a "dark side" to the network in a way that contrasts the tonic/dominant relationship. The piece has a loose prelude and fugue form, the fugue corresponding to an implosion of the organizing force of the network, which was a bad idea in more ways than I can succinctly explain...
