Hi Mark, yes, it has not easy. If you want a time series of the water levels, you need to download the data by State and year separately. After that, there is no unique identifier for the wells so you need to create one. I concatenated State-District-Station to make one. There is also a way to access the data using python script, but I have not tried it. All the best, Andreas

Hi NYZ, Hydrogeology is such a broad subject that you need to keep studying throughout your career to be really good at it. After my MSc I have never been unemployed, but it also meant always learning new things like geophysics, GIS, project management, IWRM etc. In India you have a lot of really good hydrogeologists & I’m sure that you can find the right place to study. Maybe you can contact the Indian chapter of the IAH for more information. Good luck and all the best, Andreas

Thank you very much Andreas for the great explanation and your other videos. I have watched some of your videos so far and found them very handy. I am Mohammad Hadi Sahil from Afghanistan, and I have just started my "MSc. Groundwater and Global Change - Impacts and Adaptation" which is a joint master degree administered by IHE Delft, IST Lisbon, and TU Dresden. I have been searching for water related data for Afghanistan, but unfortunately we might not have, or I may not know, centralized database for academic and research purposes. I would like to request you to guide me how to find useful resources as you have a good experience in implementing successful project in Afghanistan. I am very eager to visit you in person one day here in Europe or maybe Afghanistan. Regards,

Hi Mohammad, the only data that I have found online is the historical surface water flow data from pre-1979 which has been compiled by the USGS. What you need to do is to get in touch with the Ministry of Energy and Water and see if they are willing to cooperate with you. The Hydrogeology Department has set up groundwater monitoring systems all over the country & is very active in collecting data - which you will need as this kind of information cannot be replaced by regional tools like GRACE. Good luck with your research and all the best, Andreas

Shouldn't the groundwater level near rivers and reservoirs be close to zero?
@GeosearchInternational
Жыл бұрын
Hi Irina, Yes that is true if the surface water body is in hydraulic continuity with the water table. In the video, the datum (zero) is sea level, and as the river/reservoir in the Tapi basin are above sea level this is also reflected in the contour lines. Near the coast, the elevation of the water table is even below sea level in certain places. This is because excess abstraction by the coastal towns has lowered the water levels so much that saline intrusion will be taking place from the sea. All the best, Andreas

Nice one Andreas also can you do in hilly slope areas where the geographical vertical drift taken in consideration it is also in SAGA
@GeosearchInternational
Жыл бұрын
Hi Wonde, the Thin Plate Spline interpolation is good to use for things which do not change dramatically over distance - like the groundwater table which will change gradually. If the aquifers in the hilly areas are interconnected & share the same water table, by all means use the TPS. If not, then you should not be interpolating them in any case. If you are interested in interpolating another parameter - like ground elevation - then another interpolation method is probably better. All the best, Andreas

Hello Andreas, Stumbled onto your videos as i was trying to learn a bit about hydrogeology. I am from a family of farmers in northen Kazakhstan , and they are in dire need of irrigation. From what i understand few years ago a chinese company flew out their experts trying to find water in area but they found nothing. I though about hiring local hydrogeologists but my family are not sure about their competence . They previously hired some guys to drill holes but found no water. I was thinking about buy/renting some exploration equipment like erm or something else, try to collect data myself and send it off to experts abroad. I work in medical administration and have no technical expertise, Do you think this is viable ? Or should i pursue some other option?

Hi chingikz13 k, sorry to hear about the hardship faced by the people of northern Kazakhstan. I visited your country in November/December 1997 to do a TDEM survey for gold exploration and had a really great time, though it was below -20degC. As you work in the medical field, try to imagine that you have a patient and you don't know what is wrong with that person. Would you let a non-medical qualified guy make a prognosis or even start to operate? In groundwater exploration it's a similar story. You need a qualified hydrogeologist to first of all understand the project area, go there and look at existing water resources (wells/springs/rivers) and then decide if there are sufficient groundwater resources and how sustainable they are. The next step is usually a geophysical survey which is normally done by a geophysicist, before exploratory drilling can begin. Doing surface geophysics is also quite complicated and unless you are experienced in this with a lot of field experience, I would not recommend that you rent/buy equipment and try to do your own survey. Here is a video I made on groundwater exploration strategy: kzitem.info/news/bejne/lJlmz4SghmhmfYo It is how I normally do this & is based on a step-by-step approach, so you don't start drilling unless you are pretty sure of being successful. For your consultant hydrogeologist you need an independent professional, not some one linked with a drilling company as drillers get paid by the metre so they don't care how many dry holes they drill. Some drillers even claim a borehole is unsuccessful, just so that they can drill some more. I'm sure that in Kazakhstan there are some good hydrogeologists. Why don't you contact some of the Universities and see if they can recommend someone? I wish you good luck & all the best, Andreas

@@GeosearchInternational Thank you very much for your fast and in depth response. I have tried contacting University in almaty that specializes in geology and hydrogeology however i was not successful. From what i understand they mostly work with big oil and gas / mining companies. Maybe municipal organizations for water supply. I am also hesitant approaching local hydrogeology companies, due to large amount of bureaucracy and corruption in Kazakhstan. Do you by any chance have any local hydrogeologist colleague you could recommend to do desk study? If not within Kazakhstan, maybe some of your international colleagues who are willing to travel / consult to other countries? I apologies if i am being overly persistent. I understand that i lack knowledge and experience in this field, but i would like to make life better for locals.
@GeosearchInternational

Sorry, I don't know any hydrogeologist in Kazakhstan. Even if you get an international one like me, it does not really help you as the key person who will supervise all the data gathering, geophysics and drilling is the local one. Are there any communities in your region who have successful irrigation wells? Maybe you can ask them who did the groundwater exploration and then follow up from there? Local knowledge is the most important thing, as the local hydrogeologist will know which drilling companies are trustworthy etc. Most of my projects I just make sure that everyone is doing the right thing, but the local team is really the deciding factor if the project will be successful or not. Good luck & all the best, Andreas

Hi Aariz, Sorry I have not found anything so far. Actually I don't think I have seen any good papers about groundwater level interpolation. Many of them are using IDW, which just produces "bulls eyes" and some use kriging, which is OK if you know how to adjust the parameters. Anyway, the way to test it is to look at the water levels and see if you could have made a better contour map using a pencil & paper. The TPS method is the best I have seen so far.
