Did you know that the amount of water lost to evaporation from all the reservoirs in the world is estimated to be greater that the total global domestic and industrial water demand?
So why is this important loss of water from reservoirs not addressed more often in river basin plans, or the cost-benefit analysis for new dams? The main reason is that it is difficult to accurately calculate the evaporation rate from a reservoir. You need access to advanced meteorological data that can be expensive and difficult to collect.
In today’s video I’m going to show you how to estimate evaporation losses from a reservoir using free remote sensing data. We’ll use the Kajaki Reservoir in Afghanistan as an example, and compare our results to the hydrological modelling work done by the USGS.
