Will you get a sugden a 21 clone? I built two different clone amps to see the difference. One is jlh 1969, other one is musical fidelity a1. I am planning to built a Nelson pass amp and then ljm the one you liked. this quad looks promising too. Thanks for sharing.

@tamayaytam I may do, which Sugden A21 clone? I have been looking at the A21SE. Also this amp needs special speaker protection circuits. I have a couple of variation of the AIYIMA 1969 on the way, also a few other amps for upcoming videos.

Hey Sir ! 😀🤔 I wish I knew more about amplifier terms like THD-N. I'm doing more renos around my house. My body feels like I had a wrestling match with Mike Tyson. 😅😅 Nice amp. I'm glad it sounds nice. 🤔

THD+N is Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and the N is for the Noise within the output. Great that you are back at your renovations. I love to step back and look at a job well done. 👍

@@Elecifun thanks for the explanation about THD-N. I watched a very detailed video about amps which explains many of the things that need to be done to get the most out of an amp. Good night sir. You'll be in bed soon. I'm just getting up. Dec.

Hello, i bought a couple of these diy kits a few weeks ago. Maybe just my bad luck, but mine I could never get them working as they should, mine sound distorted at lower volumes, don't know why. Changed a few components and semiconductors, but to no avail. Not good at all. I also have a pair of L12-2, now these are very nice, very good sounding amps.

@@decem_unosquattro9538 Oh, don't I explain it well enough? I have to stop for a while doing this as my power supply can not provide me the required voltage output to fairly reflect the amplifier on test performance. Interesting - why are you testing the FFT at such a low -20dbfs? Is the standard not around -3dbfs? -20dbfs means its 10% of the full signal. So if the max input signal of the amp is say 1.2V - you are applying 120mv. Now if the amp gain is say 20x gain - that's an output of 2.4V or ~1W? I may have it wrong....?? Perhaps you should test what the input/output V signal is at -20dbfs - that will tell us something i hope?

Great comment. In my defence I did test -20, -15, -10 and -2.8dbfs. I must say that at different voltages the SPA THD outputs were different. Omitted from video to keep the length down. I will tonight get the amp back on the bench and take these measurements and feedback to you.

@@Elecifun Absolutely, getting measurements at various levels is best. I did a loop check on my Scarlett , and can confirm that when input level was -20Dbfs, the voltage was ~220mv.

@zoelong6021 I've decided, as the output is effected by voltage, I can only continue these tests once I have the ability to provide the DUT with its correct, recommended voltages. I have bought 11 toroidal transformers but these are no use for all variable voltages and current requirements. A new PSU is the answer. Have you any inexpensive suggestions?

@@zoelong6021 For instance the Quad 606 is recommended 45V 0 45V, L12-2 50V 0 50V. What I'm trying to say is I have been using whatever I have, power supply up to 32V 0 32V and toroidal 42V 0 42V. I need variable voltages for these different circuits up to so far 60V 0 60V. A new power supply is on my list. These circuits tested at different voltages and pushing for -3dbfs I get different results. Regarding Scarlett, I sold mine. I couldn't get -3dbfs without adding gain using the multi-turn pot. Then I never new if the thing was in the same place so I would have to recalibrate every time. The difference between the sound card and Scarlett to small, so I'm back on the sound card. I too am saving for a QA403 It is an awesome bit is kit, but expensive 700 euros. PS I am trying to find out if its possible to sync two Rigol DP832's together for serial or parallel connections while using tracking. Any ideas?

Yeah, sound is such a difficult thing to describe. For me, tone chasing is a lifelong quest. There are SO MANY variables it can be maddening. I definitely know what I like, but describing that to others is really difficult. I have found that, in general, people that like the same genres of music often like similar sound/tone qualities. Even this is difficult to describe. For example, I'm a huge fan of Classic Rock especially guitar driven pieces. I am a guitar player myself so I really study the music. I like the warm, rich sound of tube driven amplifiers set as close as possible to the original analog recordings. As close as possible to what the musicians and sound engineers at the time envisioned. I've found that my band mates and friends who also enjoy Classic Rock have similar tones coming through their amplifier systems. Even those who don't run valve amps achieve similar tones through equalizer settings etc. For about 45 years and counting I've been listening to the same recordings on different systems and have found that my favorite sound is from a simple valve system with no tone control through old heavy JBL speakers. Interestingly, I don't pine for the old vinyl records. I've never liked the crackles and pops of vinyl, especially when they get old and scratched. I have no sentimental feelings for that lol. I like the old analog studio recordings but stored on CDs. My favorite DAC is my old iPod. Sorry about the rambling comments but I know you're a kindred spirit when it comes to tone chasing and can probably understand my feeble descriptions lol. Thanks for sharing your journey Elecifun. Your experiences have improved my own. Happy listening amigo. 🎸 🎶 🍻

@SonicOx Listening to music with the same system can be two different experiences if you move that system into a different room and listen to the same music there.Different room acoustics as you know make a difference. The above is one of the reasons why I don't play music in my videos. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

I agree that room acoustics are one of the endless variables. Even speaker placement within the room. The variables can be a bit frustrating to contend with but are also probably the reason the "tone quest" remains a fun and fresh part of the hobby for me anyway.

The reason the bass is often more likeable from older speaker is that they only had 1. order filter or no filter on the bass driver. Those filters create phase rotation in 200-300Hz creating less clean bass there, and bass guitar realism etc drops off. Bass driver is 90-180 degrees out of phase with the mid driver.. Inductors for 70-100Hz lpf beomes massive and more expensive than old Jbl speakers so you never see quality lowpass filters that only create a small phase rotation. With dsp one can have 1.order lowpass at 45Hz doing the same thing much cheaper and the upper bass is just as good as in old speakers only much more powerful. In new speakers one can rip out the 2. order lowpass filter and put an massive series inductor instead and you can have that stunning clean bass. Inductors on Aliexpress have wicked good value.
