NHO I do agree with Gaby though. That it's great in theory, but just plain exhausting in practice. After a certain point, it becomes just so frustrating. And like she kept saying, just GOOGLE IT! I feel like there is very little excuse for ignorance these days when the internet is what it is.

it's also important to not consider some informed opinions as just "ignorant". i feel like dialogue is better way to go about it. and its evidently way more complex than just googling things dude
@alexandraskinner9770
7 жыл бұрын
Dominika Zabrocki Absolutely, I completely agree that dialogue is important and of so much value when it comes to increasing understanding. And I'm certainly not talking about informed opinions when I say 'ignorance'. If they're truly informed opinions, then by their very nature they aren't ignorant. But I think there are definitely a lot of questions (most of the ones that Candace asked) that have entire forums dedicated to answering them that are easily found by googling it and quite frankly I don't understand why they need to be asked anyway. Sometimes it feels like the questions come more from a voyeuristic place rather than that of someone trying to be better informed. My issue isn't really about asking the questions though, it's about the unrealistic and unfair expectation to be willing to offer up personal information, but also make sure to add a disclaimer that I don't speak for every bi person out there. It can just feel overwhelming and like a lot of pressure and then I feel guilty for not feeling like playing teacher today, y'know? Thanks for the thoughtful response, by the way. I tend to try to stay out of KZitem comments because they can get nasty pretty quickly, but they can also be a great place for discourse with the right people.

I think i understand more now, thank you so much. it just frustrates me when people put themselves on a pedestal and preach rather than just talking like regular human beings (not you obviously, but some are like that). or when people get angry over simple curiosity. But, i totally get how all those questions get annoying, and how sometimes, as you said, they are asked with not the best intentions (kind of like they are demanding info or literally just asking "gotcha" questions, or just plain being rude af) But I guess when someone finds out that you're part of a smallish demographic that has tons of misinformation linked to it, they see you and want to know what you think, and avoid all the bullshit. it's definitely a lot of pressure on the person being asked, and it shows that the asker doesn't care a huge amount (not enough to have researched it already), but it can be kind of a compliment? it makes me really anxious to answer those sorts of questions, and i'm sure that's true for a lot of people, but if the end goal is spreading legit information, and working towards tolerance of other groups and opinions, then i guess we just need to be brave the ignorance. I'd really like to know what you think, if i've missed the mark or not. lol i feel like i've completely overthought everything as much as it is possible to do so. how many mini essays can we throw at each other? jk i might have the upper hand cuz it's still evening here in Australia lol

I have tried so hard to be able to understand this but I'm finding it very hard to do. I understand that if you like a woman then a strap on would provide the feel good sensation that men's genitalia does. What I don't understand is how someone can say that they're not attracted to a penis. Like, I know lesbians can be attracted to men because of who they are but why is the line drawn just because they have a penis? I don't understand when the penis and the strap on would provide the same sensation. I'm not judging anyone and don't mean to cause drama, I'm just looking for some enlightenment because I really do want to understand this.
@itisdevonly
7 жыл бұрын
As someone who is pansexual and demisexual, my sense of attraction is towards the individual, their personality, and their connection with me. How they look or what genitals they have don't really matter to me. However, for most people, I think, attraction to specific genders is largely based on physical appearance and having feminine or masculine features and figure. Genitals don't factor into that. Some people may be attracted to particular types of genitals, but it's definitely not a given. Moreover, just because you enjoy the feel of a penis doesn't mean you're attracted to penises any more than liking the feel of dildos or vibrators means you're attracted to dildos and vibrators. If guys are a turn-off for you, then you won't want to have sex with one, even if you like the sensation of a penis inside you. Same goes for straight guys who enjoy receiving anal.

Being attracted to girls made me "not straight," but also being attracted to guys made me "not gay." The bisexual stereotypes where a bi woman is seen as straight and unable to accept it, and bi men as being gay and unable to accept it, are pretty patriarchal and mono-sexual centric when it's your lived experience - it ends up being all about men, the implication that if you're anything but a mono sexual man, then your sexual preference should be oriented TOWARDS mono sexual men. It's really tiring.

@dracawyn

I see where you're coming from but I don't know if bisexuality applies to succubi or incubi. They might have preferences the same way humans have favorite foods but I wouldn't think their sexuality really fits on a spectrum the way human sexuality does. They are mythical creatures that feed on sexual pleasure, I'm not sure the same rules apply. Like how when Bo doesn't want to be polyamorous but it literally almost kills her when she tries to stay in a strictly monogamous relationship. Her biology and physiological needs are vastly different from those of humans because she's Fae. Simply put, she's not human and so human cultural norms, rules, and labels genuinely don't apply. Especially when literally every other member of her species approaches sexuality in the same way. Attaching a human label to another species doesn't make sense. The same reason we don't call male lions polygynists because they have a pride full of female mates and we don't call desert grassland whiptail lizards (a species consisting entirely of females and no males) lesbians.
@jeffdavis4891
7 жыл бұрын
I don't mean to be rude Mary, I definitely see where you're coming from, but I think that what you're saying is bi erasure. If you're not familiar with the term that means the erasing of bi people from media, history, etc by denying their identity. In the show the Fae clearly have genders and sexual preferences for different genders. I think that it would be more fair to say that all succubi or incubi are bisexual rather than saying that bisexuality does not apply to them.
@jeffdavis4891
7 жыл бұрын
lol "coming from a bi person". I'm bi too, boo. And the difference between labeling an animal bi and a mythical creature bi is that in this case the mythical creature is intelligent. Intelligence implies self-awareness, self-aware beings are aware of their sexuality. The bi community has enough people telling us that we're not real, I'm curious why we're othering our own (very limited) representation in media.
@dracawyn
7 жыл бұрын
I also feel like labeling Bo as bisexual would just perpetuate the stereotype that bisexuals are all sex-crazed and will eventually cheat on their partner because if they're getting the vag, they want the dick, and if they're getting the dick, they want the vag. Bo literally feeds on sexual pleasure and starts starving if she isn't getting enough sex. She winds up HAVING to become polyamorous, despite wanting to stay monogamous, because she just can't get enough sex from one person. That does not do any favors for bisexual stereotypes.
@Mooseplatoon
7 жыл бұрын
Mary Whipple The problem I have with your criticism is that while I agree that Bo fits the bi stereotype, I believe that it's a conscious attempt to "reclaim" it. Bi, hypersexual poly people will always exist, and there's nothing wrong with that. People who happen to resemble a stereotype are not a detriment to the community and they should not be stigmatized for being themselves. That idea stems from the attitudes in the LGBT+ community that lead to things like bi erasure and the backlash against effeminate gay men. Bo becomes very comfortable with her polyamorous nature over the course of the show (if memory serves), and she initially wants to be monogamous so she can express her devotion in a way that she and her partner will recognize. My interpretation of the moral is that you don't need to fit anyone's definition of love, and the number of partners Bo has does not reduce the love she feels for each individual.

Clarke Griffin ( from the 100) and Bo Dennis (Lost Girl) are two bisexual leads in shows that I can think of. Lost Girl centered around her sexuality as part of the plot since she was a succubus. The 100 doesn't use sexuality to define anyone, people just are what they are. Though, when they killed Lexa it caused a huge blowback from the LGBT community.

The point about choosing education over judgement/attack is important. I think it's the same with almost any social issue - yes, it's frustrating to repeat ourselves, and yes, it can be scary/infuriating to confront ignorant/bigoted points of view. And so, yes - as people are really fond of saying at the moment, we're allowed to be angry. But we should recognise that our anger, while valid and okay to experience, isn't always the best tool for the job at hand.

I loved that "educate instead of judge" statement because it's completely true. I had a friend who was a homophobe when I met him and after I told him I was gay he was baffled, but a friend and I sat him down and answers every question he had and within 45 minutes he was okay with it.

I actually have a crazy story. I'm bisexual and currently dating a girl (I'm also a girl) but I actually used to be really homophobic. I'm ashamed of it but I've seen both sides including the wrong one

Oh yeah, the representation thing is also a problem with other oroentations! I'm asexual and I don't know any book or movie where there was an asexual person! And you're so right with the labels! Why is everyone against them? People fought so hard for it! They're just means of communication and nothing else! It really helps a lot of people so that they see they're not alone!

A few thoughts: - As a bi woman who is married to a man, biphobia and bi-erasure are SUPER REAL. Barely anyone acknowledges me as a bi woman BECAUSE I am married to a man. I'm obviously straight. I obviously picked a side, etc. That's simply not true. Straight people don't stop being attracted to people of the opposite gender IN GENERAL just because they found the ONE person they want to settle down with. As my stepmom says (about my dad) "He's married. He ain't dead." - When I came out to my biological mom as bi, she said, "Oh, this is just a phase because it's cool and hip." If she only knew what bi people have to put up with that neither straight NOR gay people deal with. - Bi women are not ALL unicorns. Straight couples: Please quit asking us to have sex with you. - I had a gay friend in high school and I knew he was gay long before he did. The day he came out to me, all I had to say about it was, "I can't believe it took you this long to figure it out. I had you pegged in fifth grade." Sometimes, coming out ISN'T a big deal (depending on who you're coming out to. We lived in a VERY small, VERY fundamentalist-Christian town and everyone else didn't take it as well as I did.) becaues SOMETIMES the person you're coming out to already knew. I guess I picked him up on my bi-fi XD

I haven’t come out yet but I’m bi ( well pan but no one really knows what that means) I know I’m going to face a lot of hatred - not only from straight people, but from the community itself. But being bi makes me happy - and knowing I have the support of my friends means a lot. Thanks for this video, it helped me work through some things 🏳️🌈💖

Shit, Gabby mentioning how even at 28 she still has to remind herself that there's nothing wrong with her, really resonated with me. As a kid I knew I was different and although I'm out and proud, I still have those moments where I'm like "There's nothing wrong with you, it's society whose wrong"

It makes me so happy when I see good lgbtqia portrayal in movies and tv shows. The show Sex Education has amazing representation and I love it. There are men that identity as bisexual, which is uncommon a lot, and there’s a pansexual girl, an asexual girl, and just a lot of fluidity in sexuality and I love it so much. Also a guy had two moms and it’s just totally normal. It portrays sexuality so perfectly and it’s amazing.

E Blake but people know how white cis straight people are and theres a variety of them (just like in real life) and every minority group is represented by one person and they tend to make this one person a stereotype. so thats the reason why people think everyone in this minority group is like this character / stereotype
@anthonyd9844

E Blake white people are portrayed accurately from every angle on tv since the dawn of cinema. In a perfect world I'd wish the same for every minority group.
@Mooseplatoon

I don't think that's necessarily true. We portray white people as we are, but the prejudice and privilege working behind the scenes is always just out of frame. It's when we hand the camera off to other people that we start to see the whole picture, as the mechanisms responsible for our place in the world are easier to see from their point of view.
@robbieh6182

E Blake I agree, also I don't expect straight directors to accurately depict a gay character. Gay directors tend to have a lot wider range of personalities in their gay characters, although not always accurate either. Accurate is sometimes boring.

If I remember that was more Gaby's theory than Allison's, and Allison didn't really respond to it. I could be completely wrong, however. Hetero-romantic ace people don't often identify strongly with the community in any case. Perhaps that will change with time.

The bi question is so real and it makes you feel so bad when you are considered part of both communities but at the same time, you aren't part of either community. It's like you belong everywhere but you also don't belong anywhere. There are days when you're hated by everyone because have connections to both "worlds". It's even harder when you young and scared because being Bisexual isn't a thing, you're either straight and will date guys or gay and will date girls, there's no in between. Im happy kids will have a way to know now.
