My best friend is a lesbian and she gets the whole 'oh I don't believe you're a lesbian' from straight cis guys just because she also prefers dressing feminine and having long hair. It even frustrates me because I can just feel how unfair it is that someone wouldn't accept who you are just because of the way you choose to dress. No-one would ever question me for being straight so why should she be disbelieved for not being.

Do you think any cis guys dress like women to get into women's bathrooms or competitive sports, and do you think transgendered people should have to dress like stereotypical members of the sex they identify with in order to get those protections? Should a transgender female have to remove a penis and testicals in order to be treated as female? What if she identified as female but prefers not to cut herself up, and likes to dress "butch"?

Chloe Rose they equated it to male anatomy which is exactly what a penis belongs to. Whomever has the capability of being sexually attracted to the male anatomy, regardless of if the individual identifies as a trans woman, is something other than a lesbian (pansexual, bisexual, fluid, demisexual, etc). Lesbians are romantically attracted to women and sexually attracted to the female body.

I like how Steph explained how each person is different and how they look doesn't and shouldn't define their sexuality. I struggled to finding my style. The media mostly shows just two sides the really feminine lesbian and the really butch lesbian so I figured I had to be one or the other (obviously that's not the case since everyone is so different). I knew I wasn't girly so I figured I had to be the butch lesbian. After doing so research I found that there's a bunch of different styles that lesbians have and that they aren't just either feminine or butch. So for me it was hard to find that balance between tomboy and butch, because of what was around me. I grew up as a tomboy and that's what I was comfortable being, but I knew there was still something missing (or taking up space lol) and that was the fact that I was kind of forced to portray this girly facade. Then I found the look that was close to I was comfortable with. I wanted to be on the butch side because that's what I'm comfortable with and that's the side I can relate to more, but I still wanted to be seen as the girl I am. So I'm what you would call a soft butch and I'm proud of that.

Sasha Knight I‘m happy that you‘re more comfortable now but don‘t feel pressured to dress like the stereotypes, you don‘t need to prove anything to anyone. if you want to dress girly, dress girly. if you want to dress more tomboy-ish, do it. look at all those androgynous models who are up and coming today! everybody has their own unique style. you do you.

Sasha Knight I feel the same way. I'm neither femme nor butch. I sometimes wear makeup on special occasions but not everyday. I dress comfortable to what I like. Cargo shorts with a cute shirt sometimes just a simple tee shirt, sometimes a girly shirt. Whatever works. Go with what works for you.

Hellヘル Humans automatically turn their behaviour into a pattern. Even if you like girls more you might end up only dating men your entire life because you didn't take active actions to break the pattern. So if you want to start to date girls you need to make it happen. Like going to places where lesbians and bi-girls hang out. Making lesbian friends is also helpful!

Artemis Art It means old stereotypes die hard. And, some old, debunked psychological theories also die hard, like, "Oh, you just haven't met the right man yet." You know how ridiculous these are, and so do I. Keep fighting the good fight and results eventually will follow.
@Lillyluvsanime

I've seen a commenter on another youtube video who had said something to the effect of, "lesbians are smelly and sleep with other women because they can't get a man." The idea of "you're too pretty to be gay," roots from the idea that women who are attracted to women have... resorted to that because they can't get a guy interested. I felt the need to clear up for him (of course, it was a dude...) that who you can get into your bed has nothing to do with sexual orientation, and vice versa, who they're into has nothing to do with how someone looks.
@stargazer2042
5 жыл бұрын
The guys who say that would likely not respect your boundaries if you did go home with them. I'd congratulate you on being gay, though gays can be abusive too. "But you are so pretty" just means they wish you were straight so you would date them. "You must hate men" means they want to villify lesbians for not dating men. Gloria Steinem did say women can't consent to sex with men, which men have good reason to be upset about. But that does not mean men assume all lesbians would argue the same in order to get rid of the competition.

2:10 - I knew these 2 girl who had been dating for years and both of them were hyper feminine. Straight guys didn't believe they were truly gay, and that they were actually bi and needed/wanted a guy to join them. They would try to get a 3 way with them. Other lesbians also didn't accept them because they were both hyper femme, not 1 femme and 1 butch. Some lesbians also thought that they had male advances and flirting "coming to them", because they didnt look "gay" enough. As if it was their fault that some men kept harassing them about a 3 way. They were pressed from all sides to show/prove that they were gay, so both of them cut their hair very short and stopped wearing anything very feminine. It was quite sad. Both of them lamented cutting their hair short, but thought they had to choose between being "a real lesbian"/ accepted vs being feminine.

I think it's really important to not conflate sexuality & gender identity with genitals because some people who identify as women/lesbians may have a penis & other people who identify as lesbians may date people with penises. I think Steph started to touch on this by talking about how it's not cool to think someone being a "goldstar" is somehow better than another person who's not. But I think we should push ourselves beyond saying goldstar isn't better to just not using the term. Ultimately, it ends of making bi folks, trans folks, & other people who don't fit the dominant narrative of being gay feel bad. And it confuses straight people by further reinforcing stereotypes. I think the other Pour Decisions video with Gaby & Allison touches on this well.

ALSO confuses straight people and those who do not know anything about the LGBT if you don't state: **When people talk about women with penises, they are speaking about Trans folk who were born male but due to gender dysphoria, a medically diagnosable issue, transition to female. They may sometimes not get genital surgery for it is expensive and also at this time not completely safe** That being said, If i'm understanding you correctly- I gotta disagree with you a little bit about your first part. the trans population is _extremely_ small, 0.6% if you want to be exact. With that, they are also a immensely small exception to the whole "Being a lesbian is being a CIS woman interested in other CIS women" and etc. The definition of straight, gay, and bi don't need to change to _perfectly_ align for cis and trans people. That will cause a bunch of confusion, potentially scare other LGBT or outsiders, and honestly- it isn't hard to say to somebody when you're >Blank< but also trans. Its very important anyway to say it off the bat while dating because you don't want to surprise somebody with something like that because *genitals very much matter to straight or gay folk who are specifically looking for a certain type* and they have a high probability of reacting negatively, or in extreme cases- dangerous for feeling like being tricked. Rest of what you said it cool though : ) don't care too much about being a gold star are not- just be you.

Poperty you can't know that someone has a penis just by looking at them, that makes no sense. Lesbians can be attracted to trans women and trans lesbians ARE REAL LESBIANS

My ex identified as straight, I got a bit of a crush on her but squashed it down. Pretty much right after that she started questioning. Turns out she's bi. The issue however is that I was desperate to not fall into the typical trap of falling for the straight best friend so even for about two weeks or so after she came out I was kind of guarded with her. I'm another one of those rare lesbians who doesn't want to go too fast for fear of messing things up. Of course, 2-3 months later, she broke it off saying that it "wasn't romantic enough".

I have a crush on my straight friend (which is highly unfair since ALL my other female friends are wlw) and I did the whole 'slightly emotionally removing myself' thing and it was working out. I didn't have such strong feelings for her and i was finally moving on... AND THEN I HUNG OUT WITH HER AGAIN (not even 1 on 1) AND ALL THE LOVEY DOVEY FEELINGS CAME FLOODING BACK!!! (I'm a desperate gay please help) (p.s. I'm hoping that if i can find another wlw to have a crush on/date i won't be so obsessed with my friend)

I got so mad when I was out with my mom at a miniature golf course and she looked at the people ahead of us and she was like “ see that girl right there she’s lesbian” and I said “ how do u know “ and she’s said “because of the way she’s dressed” and I just thought ‘really , because of the ways she’s dressed then how come u can’t tell I’m bi then huh

I can relate to ElloSteph, and agree completely w/ the responses 100%. I'm a very feminine top lesbian (who likes other femmes) , and I hear from both guys and girls that they think I can't be gay, or I must be bi b/c I'm very girly, and I like other femmes 4 the most part. It's annoying af that ppl make all these assumptions about us, and try to heterosexualize homosexuality like their has to be a "man", or all lesbians must be butch and all gay men must be flamboyant. Then ironically, even w/ these assumptions these same ppl think they're so open-minded just b/c they're not burning crosses on your yard while holding picket signs saying "God Hates Gays". Ruby Rose kinda looks like a mix of Leonardo DiCaprio meets Angelina Jolie or Justin Bieber. That's why I think girls who identify as str8 wanna be w/ her. LOL She's both pretty and handsome at the same time. LOL I'm a gold star too. I have been flashed several times. Wasn't into it. I'm a top and I rather penetrate than be penetrated. I'm more into pleasuring the girl, and get off on that. Idc what methods r used I just wanna make my lover moan and quiver in pleasure be it w/ it tongue, fingers, strap-on, or better yet, all of them. I'm lucky af b/c I actually nvr been rejected sexually, and u'd think as a lesbian I would be but it seems like I'm usually into women that turn out to be bi-sexual or lesbian. I guess I have good gaydar or something cuz gorgeous bisexual women seem to like me bk. Idfk but it's great that it worked out that way thus far, and I feel lucky I haven't had my heart ripped out by a str8 girl. Agreed, str8 ppl can deff. be allies.

When I first fiagureured out I was gay. I wore black and never dresses because I thought I had to wear black and masculin clothing because I thought I had to to be gay. I was 13 now I wear all girly dresses and bright colors because they make me happy.

the media seems to be promoting female bisexuality and its becoming a trend. I remember when Katy Perry's "I kissed I girl" came out, sometime later about 60% of the girls in my school starting labeling themselves as bisexual. Feminism has alot to do with it.

I’m pretty sure i’m a lesbian but I feel like I’m not valid because I’m not repulsed by men like they’re hot sometimes and I’ve only realized i’m gay a year ago and i’m 18.... any tips on feeling valid and part of the lesbian community?

on behalf of humanity I appologize ! You DO NOT need to anything, let alone hate or be repulsed by half the globe ?! This third wave feminism with its idea of "butch women are better men than men themselves" has more mental fallacies in it than I can count ! like who's counting? or why is there a contest? or who the fuck cares or should care? Getting "educated" by utterly frustrated people is surely not the best way to reach your personal goals. I'm gay, should I be repulsed by women? it's utterly ludicrous, I can only be repulsed by repulsive behavior, regardless of sex or gender or sexuality, in actuality more often than not I am repulsed by the intolerance of queer folk amongst themselves! The very idea that you "should" feel repusled by men comes from very frustrated lesbians, and that right there is repulsive, in case you wanted to be repulsed by something.. :D Nothing is or can be wrong unless you consciously wrong someone, like lying, deceiving cheating etc, and as you may have noticed literally none of these have anything to do with sexuality but with shitty human behavior that can be done and sadly is done by humans of all sexualities. So you know, find yourself out, don't hurt people on the way and be a nice person . there is too much hate out there towards LGBT, among them, from them, just all over and hate won't go away with even more hate, trust me on that one :)
