Thank you for this video, got the first border on this big quilt I've been piecing using this method! Lays flat and looks great! I used to just sew the borders onto the sides and cut off the excess. This method takes longer but the results are much better! Now to tackle border #2!

Margaret Leuwen Quilting Yes I will, I am watching all of your videos,:) you explain things very well. I love the quilt behind you, it is beautiful, what is it called? As you can tell I am new to quilting and I love your instructions. I bought one of those tape measures you use yesterday so I can have it to measure for my next quilt borders :) And thank you for the quick reply, I have posted messages to many tutorials and I think yours is the first. :)

The Quilt behind me is called Victorian Romance. It is a quilt I designed! It was published by McCalls Quick Quilts. The pattern is still available! If you follow this link (www.mccallsquilting.com/free-easy-quilt-patterns.html) and register your email address you can get the pattern and two others for free! You will really like the tape measure, because it's so long it comes in handy! Thanks for watching!! Margaret

If your quilt top doesn't have an even edge, would you recommend squaring the quilt top before adding the border? Or line up the edge of the border on the "shortest" row and square after quilting?

Thanks for this tutorial. I needed a refresher on adding a border on a large quilt. I've made smaller items this year, and haven't really had to piece the border. I appreciate your tutorials. Very informative and professional. Thank you. I gotta go and try to measure my quilt. Need to put it on the floor and crawl around and measure it. Not an easy thing for someone my age!!!!

Hi Margaret, thanks so much for this tutorial! My question actually refers to your longarm table! Would you tell me where you found the cutting mat (is that a cutting mat) to fit your table? Thanks so much. Now I am going to add borders to my Cowgirl Bling quilt!!

+Brenda Alburl, oh! Now I get it! The Mat cam with the long arm when I purchased it. I actually had to take it off because after a year on the table it still wouldn't lay flat. It's 12' long! I'm not certain if it is available someplace.

Thanks! Seems it would be handy at times! I'm new to long-arming! I have a 12' table as well. I really like the idea of laying your quilt across your longarm. I can't get in the floor (thanks to bad knees!)n and this is a great way to measure it! I am so glad I started looking through You Tube for adding borders! I've made several quilts with borders added the WRONG way and the quilt I am working on is going in a show (maybe!) so decided to learn the correct way to add borders! Thanks again for the great video! Have a great day!

Im sorry, I thought I was understanding. Once you get the measurements, why do you divide by three? Thank you for your video, it was most helpful.
@MargaretLeuwenQuilting
8 жыл бұрын
+Jetenginejenny once you have measures your quilt in the three areas (top middle and bottom) you add those three numbers together to come up with the average. Then you cut your borders to that length. When you pin your borders to your quilt you pin the ends then the center then quarter each area. This will ease any fullness.

Hi really liked your video on borders...I am making a large memory quilt out blouses that the lady wore...they are polyester ...I have backed all the fabric..making log cabin blocks..sashing in between blocks(precut 2.5")...my question is sashing in between rows...would it be easier to put corner stones to be working with a shorter distance or how should I measure to keep it from getting wavey...if not using corner stones...and any suggestions on quilting design.....??? Thanks Barb
@MargaretLeuwenQuilting
9 жыл бұрын
Barbara Frangella Thank you so much for watching! When making sashing strips you can do either corner stones or you can make sashings for either the sides or the tops of the blocks and then make a continuous strip (similar to another row) in between. The big thing that you want to do is make certain that all of your blocks are the same size and measure for your sashing the same way you do for your borders. If the blocks are smaller you can just measure in the center of each block. You may have to ease in any excess but what sashing strips do is create a border around each block. I hope this helps! If it doesn't please don't hesitate to reach out to me again! I currently don't have any projects ready to teach sashing strips but could possibly put something together. Thanks for watching Barb!

Very helpful. I learned two things watching this. I never knew if I should sew my borders with a miter or straight and saw the you use a miter. I thought this was the proper way to eliminate the bulk. I have usually just attached the borders without measuring but I can see now that I need to measure for a straight and square quilt. Can you tell me where I can find a tape measure that long? I have never seen one. Thank you.

I am new to quilting and am getting ready to add a 2" border, then a 6" border to my granddaughter's heart quilt. Your video and comments below have helped me immensely. Now I know how to add borders the correct way by measuring in the three places and dividing by three. Do I just straight sew the top borders to the side borders? what is your website address?
@deniseornoski4399
7 жыл бұрын
Hi my name is Denise. The fabric for my 6" borders is a directional fabric. I have successfully applied the Side borders. The top and bottom border pieces have to be joined to make it long enough. My question is the best way to join the pieces together so that the end pattern matches the pattern down the sides. I hope this not too confusing. Thank you.
