As an American woman living in Japan I enjoyed the video and hearing your thoughts. I loved the point about how most foreigners (especially western foreigners) who stay in Japan long term are men. I have been here 7 years and am married to a Japanese man with a child. While I love my family and my life, I feel in my bones every day why many western women make the conscious decision that this country just isn’t for them. When you’re raised to believe you can be what you want, coming here and crashing into that invisible wall that says “well, actually, no you can’t” can be quite the hurdle to overcome.
39:39 In all honestly like being a housewife is about raising the next generation full time. Yeah! It’s a very important job!
I LOVED this video! All the topics and thoughts you mentioned were the same with what I have been thinking for the past 13 years after married to a very Japanese man! I wish all the Japanese men in 'boss' position listen to this and change their minds!!!!!! Thank you guys! You have given me a kind of confident that my ideas were not just a selfish shells!
I totally agree what Austin said!!Many people have been struggling gender role, what they are suppose to do. I want japanese politicians to listen to this episode. Thanks Auther!

I think Japan has a higher expectation of what wives and mothers should domestically accomplish, regardless of if they’re gaining income. It’s like sure, they have opportunities to strive in corporate but don’t drop the ball on domestic work or there’s consequences not just for herself but also the family.
When I was taking care of young foreign girls, I asked one question to a girl. Have you experienced bad because of your genger? She said aye. She explained how. When she was a little girl, she asked her parents to get a train toy. Her parents said, "No, you can't have train toys because you are a girl." I told her to visit a train museum at Miyazakidai if she still has a dream of railroad cunductor. Or, if she wants to get back the past passion. I think she didn't visit there. Women are feeling alienation from the old theory.

For mens toilets...no big difference in UK or NL indeed. No privacy on peeing 😅
I had been feeling awkward for being woman in japan. i started to feel especially when i started working, when i date with marriage candidates, i was for the first time seen WOMAN that i didnt feel that strongly when i was a student. there was mommy track, or a department where there was no woman,.. when you’re student you pass the exam the grade doesn’t reflect your gender. but almost all of my friends had the different opinions. they say“housewife of rich man is the best” when i married, even though i’m working like a man, family in law expected all the housework to be done by me. at work i was asked if my husband is ok for a wife to do overtime.. I almost thought i was crazily feminist or some kind of minority. After talkinn to American women, they immediately agreed with me. and i’m now happily married to latino who is very liberal, openminded and understanding. I finally love being woman.
While women's rights issues in Japan have seen tremendous improvement, there are still disadvantages to being a woman in Japanese society compared to American culture.

@@iuconnecttokyo, I've lived in the US more than 30 years. While there are complexities to consider, the degree of progress on women's rights and social status issues in the US is demonstrably ahead of Japan in many areas. Please ask your wife, I'm certain that she would understand what I mean.
In our country, there is generally a balanced representation of men and women in almost every profession. However, the lower number of women in positions such as parliamentarians or school principals, I believe, is due to fewer women applying for these roles compared to men. Therefore, I think if we encourage aspirations equally among both genders, equal opportunities would be provided. In fact, the principal of my elementary school was a woman, and the gender ratio in the election of parliamentarians is also equal. However, within the realm of politics, there's a prevalence of older men holding influential positions, which I believe is causing frustration among the citizens.
