As the U.S. and the world reckon with a history of racism that fuels our present day unjust structures, I take a moment to discuss white privilege, appropriation, gatekeeping, space-making, and other topics of privilege as they relate to classical music spaces. This video introduces a series of interviews with musicians from marginalized communities, with an emphasis on black musicians working in academia and with major classical music organizations.
NOTE: DAMN. is Kendrick Lamar's 4th studio album, not his 3rd as is stated in the video. DAMN. was his 3rd major album release, with his first album, Section.80 being release on the independent label Top Dawg Entertainment.
