I really like the philosophy of providing a short explanation of the reasoning behind instructions. It lets people understand the greater goal which can inform their own decision making in the absence of specific instructions should the need arise. I try to use that in non-aviation management guidance too.

Great stuff! Love the approach of helping the pilot get in the mind of the controller. One thing to note though is that controllers typically have to follow the same rules for directs as they do for headings (MRVAs, reasoning, assumption of additional responsibilities, etc), so often times controllers are trained to think of directs as another type of vector.

Thanks for clearing up heading vs. track in the ATC vector. Also hearing the format helps before I'm hearing it in the clouds.

As ATC we are usually trained to repeat the turn direction if it is not the shortest turn For example plane is heading north and I want a turn to 090 “Skyhawk41 turn left, left turn heading 090” That is best practice and can eliminate potential errors

When ever in doubt always ask ATC to repeat instructions or clarify. We are there to provide a service and the best service comes when everyone is on the same page and understands exactly what is happening and why. The pilot always has final say don’t be afraid to say “unable” and give a reason why

Very nice, i would have appreciated though some information regarding "resume own navigation" What the ATC will also tell us in this message, like position from a navaid etc.

In Australia if we want you to go the long way around, we will say “turn right, I say again right heading 090”

I think that's actually the proper phraseology in the US as well, but I can't say I've heard "I say again" yet.

Wow that example ATC call was fast. If that was real life I would definitely be asking for a repeat 😅🤣

Doesn't MVA provide a 500ft clears vs 1000ft you said?

Check out the AIM 5-4-5 e on MVAs. Similar to other minimums it gets 1000 feet of clearance and 2000 in mountainous areas.

Most aircraft are equipped with GPS nowadays and the pilot can use that to determine their course precisely, but that wasn't always the case.

Ground track can be finicky especially with winds at different altitudes. The best policy is to leave it up to the controller to make those adjustments, since they have the "big picture" and the responsibility for separation. If every pilot is making their own adjustments, it could get confusing. As GPS becomes more common, we may see this change one day, but not yet. Also, note that at higher speeds, even stiff crosswinds start to have little effect on ground track.
