I highly recommend the Bao-Feng UV-5R over the Wouxun. The Bao-Feng does exactly the same thing as the Wouxun for a third of the cost. Keep in mind, the Bao-Feng is a bit hard to program at first, but their are a lot of youtube videos around that show how to do it. It's cost effective and definitely reliable. If you wanna save a few bucks, definitely go with bao-feng, their is little to no differences at all.

Good information. And for those that might find communications confusing, take one the courses many local amateur radio clubs offer. They typically end with the gov't ham radio exam and you could be on the air talking around the world in a short time. In the US see ARRL, in Canada RAC web sites to get oriented. NB, there are other chinese radios on the market which basically do as the Wouxun. I think that most important is that you have understanding and then a plan... Hats off to SP1.

There is lots of hate being spread in the comments of this video lately! Previously the comments were healthy and informative. Remember guys, an effective comms plan is achieved through learning and practise! Don't buy into the snake oil of haters who themselves have no background or expertise to validate their comments. Moreover, there is no one perfect answer to the comms question. License-free or licensed amateur comms, the radio services you choose, should be chosen to meet your unique emergency communications requirements. Flag the haters in the comments, and let the comments of this video remain a place for sharing and learning as it has been until recently. STN

I recommend the Japanese Yaesu ft60r. It’s 159 dollars but the quality is way higher than the Chinese radios. The Yaesu is so much easier to program right from the front keypad. Being able to program in the field is vital when things hit the fan. Also buy a diamond x30 base antenna. It will greatly improve the range and you can carry it with you cause it’s 1 piece and only 4 feet tall

To keep unwanted interception of your comms, you could use a smart phone with PSK31 software connected to your HT's external mic and speaker jacks and send smart phone digital comms in weak signal or sensitive comms within your group and maintain portability. Depending your topography, you can overcome limited range of HT's by using an HT equipped with "cross-band repeater" functions such as the Alinco DJ-G7t. You can cross band repeat from FRS and GMRS to 2m and 70cm and 23cm. ie- DroidPSK

2D and 3D use the same programming software. 6D uses a different version. Don't mix the two - you'll brick the radio if you use the wrong one. Fortunately, the KG-UV Commander software allows imports of programming profiles between the versions, so you don't have to completely redo your 2D/3D profile in order to program the 6D. Just use the correct software version.

David. Great video! As well as VHF / UHF we're also using HF (3.5 to 28 MHz) as licensed HAMs and have structured a SKED (times and frequencies schedule) so that we can hopefully keep in contact with friends and preppers across Europe and the Atlantic from here in Sweden in a SHTF situation. People should have a way of longer distance comms with HF - especialy in the States, if your repeaters go down in an off-grid scenario.

Good overview. Two suggestions: IF you are concerned about accidentally txing on public service frequencies, omit the Tx side from the programed channel. Also, consider programming a channel as a low power, and a high power. There may be a strategic advantage to use the lowest power possible at times to avoid being overheard AND to save battery power when your partner is closeby. During good times, stay off ham freq's; keep hams friendly. At the low price of the Wouxuns, buy spares and batts.

Memory and programming-wise, the 2D and 3D models are the same. The 3D is rated IP55 for water resistance (so it the 6D). The 2D and 3D models can be software-programmed to expand their TX/RX limits beyond the ham bands, so as to use the FRS/GMRS and MURS bands like SP1 has done. The 6D has more memory presets (199 vs 128), and is also IP55 rated, but cannot be software-unlocked to transmit out of the ham bands (the most expensive model is already open for that).

When you have anonymous, ease of entry to anything, people tend to abuse it. CB at one time was a serious hobby radio band, now only truckers use it, but most are pushing 100 or more watts. HAM is pretty self-enforcing. Call signs are available to check out very easily and if you are not legit, few people will talk to you.

I have a Baofeng BF-f8HP and switched the stock antenna with a Nagoya Na-771 whip antenna, that I bought specifically for simplex communication with friends and yes we've got "the ticket", we're licensed Hams level 1 technicians. Have gotten to around 20miles line of sight simplex, and is decent in the hills, and with a Tape antenna you can extend that range considerably. I have no desire to access Repeaters, learn CW (Morse Code) or delve into the whole Ham hobby/world, while it may be cool it can get real expensive real fast. FMRS/GMRS are IMO virtually worthless unless you want to talk to someone really close by. You need to get a license, that way you can mess around with them (train) before SHTF and not worry about some Suits k,nocking at your front door. It's cheap to take the exam, but it's pretty comprehensive and takes some studying. Yes it's only 35 multiple "guess" questions, but those are randomly selected out of a pool of hundreds of potential questions.

Looks right (I ordered mine from wouxun.us, and their model numbers are slightly different). As long as the radio has TX/RX from 136-174 MHz & 420-520 MHz, you'll be able to pick up MURS, FRS, GMRS, the NOAA weather stations, plus the 2m and 70cm ham bands. As SP1 mentions, the low power setting on these radios exceeds the legal limit for FRS and MURS, so they should only be used as such in WROL situations (GMRS is OK if you pay the FCC license fee - one license covers your family).

I’m on a budget so for our group I’m doing most of the comm. spending. When I say group I’m talking brothers in law’s sister nephews, son With that said I have seen some Marine radios that are GMRS. There kinda of pricey. I’m thinking about going with Midland GMRS micro mobile. They have 15 watt and have accessory antennas that you can buy that boost your signal. Anyway I figure with those we can have a base station at the house also you can also make the micro mobile units portable. To further out the distance . Ours will be for perimeter work and scavenger missions/ hunting during a major grid down situation. Although most people will be using HAM and the like we will be on GMRS. I’m also working on a code system so if someone on the outside is listening it won’t do them any good they won’t know what we are talking about or know our plans and situation

ok! The IP Code (or International Protection Rating, consists of the letters IP followed by two digits and an optional letter. it classifies the degrees of protection provided against the intrusion of solid objects (including body parts like hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact, and water in electrical enclosures. The standard aims to provide users more detailed information than vague marketing terms such as waterproof. And on this site is more information about it (inpath.com/IP55/)

a problem we're going to have with that radio when too many people start using them, they will figure out all the different ways to get in trouble with them then the alphabet agency in charge will make them illegal for any of us to have. Just like they did with the cell phone jammers. Ham radio transceivers used to be sold unlocked just as those, now it requires a soldering iron to physically unlock the radio. Those radios will probably have to follow suit.
