Yes, Spectre is quite melancholy, but when you consider that M had just died at the end of Skyfall, it is appropriate, imho.

Spectre is such a so great song. The the string arrangement, the piano, thom's vocal, everything is incredible. They really should have put it instead. I also find interesting how radiohead just decided to release man of war 20 later. Is such a amazing rock with electronic song. But it also shows that radiohead has a lot masterpieces to spare lol

I think the story about Man Of War is a bit different. They tried to record is back in 1998 for a new album after the long tour of OK Computer. You can see that in the documentary Meeting People Is Easy. They worked on this track and Big Ideas, which would turn into Nude on In Rainbows. At that time they abandoned both songs and Man Of War was eventually released (still the 1998 version) on the OKnotOK boxset in 2017. Many speculated that it could have been a good Bond song, but i don't think they ever submitted it. The band were never big fans of the song. Btw: Thom is friends with Daniel Graig

I just realized the Man of War verse almost sounds like a Cure song ( just with Radioheads brand of jazzed up rhythms). As i got older and expanded my tastes, I started to notice many of the 80's bands that possibly inspired Radiohead. Talk Talk, The Smiths and The Pixies to name a few. All wrapped with a Beatles-esque spirit of progression and un-wasted notes. Obviously Radiohead synthesized that all into something totally unique.

Great topic, so excited for this double feature! Thanks for deep diving into Radiohead. I agree, Spectre is phenomenal and the perfect Bond theme. Man of War is incredible too, and the video is something else. As soon as you said you didn’t want to get distracted by the video, I thought yeah that’s not gonna happen

This is one of their best non-album tracks for sure. And that’s saying something because Radiohead are known for their many, many awesome songs that were left off albums. Strings are a standout for me on here. Jonny can do no wrong with his compositions. A Moon Shaped Pool isn’t a go-to when it comes to Radiohead’s work, but the strings really stand out and make it an interesting listening experience.

Radiohead has some great music videos, generally much more creative than any other bands. Even though you don't normally like music videos, it's worth checking out some of their more famous ones: High and Dry, Fake Plastic Trees, Just, Paranoid Android, Karma Police, No Surprises, Pyramid Song, Knives Out, Nude, Reckoner, House of Cards, Lotus Flower, Burn the Witch, Daydreaming, and I Promise are probably the ones most Radiohead fans are familiar with.

Great video. Spectre is a beautiful song. Sam Smith's song is very... pedestrian. Supposedly the guy were in the studio recording songs for 'A Moon Shaped Pool' and to stop everything to write and record the Spectre song.

Fun fact: Daniel Craig and Thom Yorke are friends. In fact, Thom is friends with a lot of actors: Edward Norton being one of the most famous. Craig actually asked Thom to write the theme, but the production team thought is was to heavy... Norton asked Yorke to write a song for a film he did, and Yorke actually made Motherless Brooklyn with Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) which Norton was just over the moon with

Spectre supposedly reinspired the band on how to produce music and they used what they learned for A Moon Shaped Pool. I always felt they were headed in that direction, of having classical instruments accompany them fully. However, around the time of Kid A, they felt it made them too much like the Beatles. So they went with the techno style to balance it all out.

I believe he wants to, and might get a chance to. If he does, I really hope it's a period piece set back in the Cold War where it belongs, maybe right after WW2. James Bond just doesn't work as well in the modern era, that's a mistake they keep making.
