Worked there as a contractor for the Property Services Agency (PSA) 1980-1984. This time was the main trigger that made me consider a career in the armed forces, which is what happened in spring 1984. In 2024, I celebrated my 40th anniversary of (GEAF) service. Thank you RAF Brüggen/Elmpt for letting me have my first impressions of military life.

..Great memories on this Air Station, RAFG Brüggen, as a regular visiting militairy plane spotter.. With friends and other plane spotters I visited this Air Station from 1991 till 2001, seen the flying operations of the Panavia Tornado's GR.1 and GR.4, of No. 31 Squadron 'Goldstars', No. 17 Squadron 'Black Knights', No. 14 Sqaudron 'Winged Crusaders' and No. 9 Squadron 'The Bats' at the back side of the fence at the far end of the runway, untill shortly before closing related due Defense Cutbacks of the British Government.. This was in 2002.. I even visiting the Air Station by inventation with a group and friends.. We shared our interests in the Panavia Tornado with pilots and even the operational Base Commander.. We enjoyed the time at RAFG Brüggen but sadly came to an end.. It will for always be a period which will be kept as a fantastic and great memory..!! 👍👍

The RAF Bruggen rugby club final party before the station was handed over to the Army was beyond insane. If I wrote down what went on no one would believe me. Suffice to say the hangover is literally the reason I gave up drinking alcohol. Such good times.

I was a soldier, based 20 miles away, but spent every weekend on Brugge as a member of the Phoenix Gliding Club. Our briefing on joining, at the time of the Canberra was, “strictly no photography!” I would guess that the rules changed during the Tornado years.

In ‘71 I liked to watch, and hear, the Lightnings take off and land. AOC’s were always good as AVM ‘Mick’ Martin would often review……

Does anyone have some information about the Antonov AN-124 @6:45 ? Has this aircraft really been in Elmpt/RAF Brüggen? Never heard about it. Would be interesting to know something about the freight or the purpose of this flight and where it came from.
