Currently, there is a lot of hype about generational prospect Victor Wembanyana--the 7’4 unicorn with guard skills-- the projected #1 pick in the 2023 draft. Ralph Sampson was doing all those things in the early 80s.
@Cvo-581

Bro please stop this nonsense. The ONLY similarity they have is the height. Ralph was not hitting step back 3’s from 35ft or even playing outside-in the way victor is.

@@Cvo-581 nonsense is a stretch--a big one. You are right about the range on the jump shot, but you need to go back and watch some film on Ralph at Virginia and his first few years with Houston. Alot of similarities--less the 3pt range
@bigalexg
10 ай бұрын
When Ralph developed his game there was no 3pt shot. Nobody worked on that range back then because why shot from downtown when it only counted same as a mid-range. So yeah, you are correct about his range but Ralph played the game same as everybody else back then. If he had grown up with the three he would have been all over it like everybody else these days. Ralph's jumper was just fine and unlike a lot of big men he had range and loved to play outside the paint, preferred it actually.

In the summer of 1986 the Lakers were afraid, because the twin towers had destroyed Jabbar and the Lakers, and the Celtics destroyed the twin towers and also they had the 1st pick in the draft. But the Lakers were very lucky, Len Bias died and Sampson got injured, they won the repeat, and the history changed.

Yup, but at 7'4, Ralph Sampson doesn't play like a center at all. He handles like a guard, runs the floor like a small forward and plays the power forward position. I have never seen a guy this agile. I believe that if he didn't get injured, he and Hakeem Olajuwon plus with a better supporting cast, could have dominated the Western Conference.

That’s how good the ‘86 Celtics were the beat the “Twin Towers” of Sampson & Olajuwon 4 games to 2 in the finals. Dream at 7’0” and Sampson 7’4” both guys were young, healthy and FEROCIOUS. Boston beat them with iQ and experience. Boston did have two 7 footers (Parish and Walton) and McHale at 6’11” (with an 8 ft wingspan). All 3 of Boston’s big men were seasoned pros with 5 rings between them (8 after they beat Houston).
