The more I hear and see of Keith Whitley I find it more than disturbing that he left this world so early. What an unbelievable talent.

This video is actually the beginning of his downfall sadly enough. Being a teenager touring with adults, anytime there was a drink around (which there are plenty in the music industry, let alone bluegrass)- he couldn’t refuse it. Early brain altering habits are the hardest to shake…

I think it’s mind blowing that even as a teenager Keith Whitley demanded the attention of America’s true greats in Ralph Stanley, a young Ricky Skaggs and not only was his singing so good, his guitar playing must of been something else for Lester Flat to give him a pre War Martin D 28🤯 Compare this to the tone deaf Nashville scene who rejected him for so long and it speaks volumes imo.

Keith is the reason I got into blue grass …. hearing him on my grandfathers blue grass albums as a little 6 yr old . I knew even at that young age what a beautiful voice sounded like . So different than the other blue grass singers I’d heard up until then he just had something in him no one else did since Hank Sr.

Before he started his country career, he played bluegrass with JD Crowe. They were a highly successful band with Keith singing and playing guitar. I saw a video where JD discusses his conversation when Keith talks about his desire to sing country songs.

This is what Keith Whitley was created by God to do, sing traditional and bluegrass ballads - just beautiful - nobody better... Where Keith went wrong, was his attraction to the bright lights and the big time Country scene. What a shame, he should have stayed with his roots, and he would have gone on to be the Leader and carry the bluegrass torch on from Ralph Stanley and Bill Monroe. Instead he went for Big Time country - Nashville, and got burned up by it - that's really what killed him. Damn shame. Remember everybody - stay true to who you are, to hell with the popular world...

Not a better combo anywhere with Keith singing lead and Ralph singing tenor!! Me and my dad would go to the Ralph Stanley hills of home festivals every year and heard Ralph tell the story of when he was going to do a show in West Virginia and had a flat tire and was late for the show so the folks putting the concert on put a young Keith Whitley and Ricky Skaggs who was in the audience on stage to play until Ralph got there. Ralph said when he got there and heard them boys pickin and singing he thought somebody was playing an old Stanley brother’s record! He went to their parents and had them sign permission to go on tour with him! Ralph said they did the Stanley Brothers better than the Stanley Brothers!!
