Absolute genius. Rameau belongs in the category of composers which include Janacek, Ives, Berlioz, Schoeck - all of whom were singular geniuses who did incredible, radical things with familiar materials. I just adore him.

Without Rameau and Couperin French music in the 18th century would have been much poorer than it really was.
I've been listening to baroque for a few years now and initially I thought to myself Bachelor is the best composer that ever lived. The more I listened to other composers such as Rameau, Vivaldi, Handel etc; the more I realized that all these composers are brilliant and different. Now I enjoy all off them depending on my mood.

EPManny If you study Rameau....you'll see that he really pushed for a more classical approach to music...he was a majorly important composer to us French because he reformed opera drastically and really was innovative in instrumentation and part writing in his music. Sadly with the revolution our music was much neglected and he wasn't talked about for over a century....and any composer affiliated with our monarchy was out of luck...

Great stuff. I don't understand why it wasn't a hit in 1745. One critic said he thought maybe Rameau had written the words and Voltaire had written the music.

Among the greatest dance music of all time. Must have been fun to perform in the context of royal patronage. Speaking of which, what did they feed dancers at the Palais Royale; and where did they sleep? Did Louis tryst with his favorite sopranos? Would have been an honor.

Could someone please let me know what painting accompanies this heavenly music? Is it a Poussin?
@gwedielwch

It's a capriccio by Giovanni Paolo Pannini, in the collection of the Louvre : "Une sibylle au milieu de ruines d’architecture avec l’arc de Janus Quadrifons, le temple de Vesta a Rome et la statue equestre de Marc-Aurele"; 1743 - contemporaneous with Rameau's 'Le Temple de la Gloire'. Well chosen ! Pannini was a master of perspective (here subtly effective) and a prolific painter of Rome's antiquities and ruins - often reassembled into imagined vistas. This does have echoes of Poussin (and indeed of Claude Lorrain). About a hundred years after Poussin, the baroque has now become rococo : compare Poussin's classical baroque - "A Dance to the Music of Time", "Et in Arcadia Ego", "Landscape with Saint John on Patmos" ...
