Thanks Emma. Your lists, help me in my own thinking about horror. I have identified several more rather large genres that have been squatting in the middle of us all for years growing and growing. I'm going to do something in the next on Cabal Horror. I'm nit going to tell you what it is yet. But I'll let you know when I post it. Also I'm making a bigger distinction now between subject horror (vampires, zombies, haunted houses, etc) and mood horror (found footage, J-horror, folk horror, etc.) and these almost seem like two entirely different ways of categorizing horror films and often have films that totally overlap in other ways of defining genres. But that's the fun isn't it. Then again I have a LOT of physical copies so I had to choose between which style of genre keeping I was using. So rather than use any of the mood horror for my shelves it's all subject horror. Which means found footage films are in all the categories that they deal with, rather than a separate section for each sort of mood or style. Anyway I will be making many more pieces on horror genres.

I do consider Hellraiser as body horror :) My favourite subgenre is Gothic. I just adore the atmosphere and the way it isolates characters to expose their psychology. And the use of light, dark and empty spaces to create scares. The Innocents has to be one of the more underrated horror films of all time, it's so beautifully made and the lady on the lake is one of the enduring images that sends shivers down my spine. And an all-timer performance by Deborah Kerr. I'd love to see some more Cosmic Horror coming through, it's my other fave. Done well there could be some spectacular films in the future - a chance for a filmmaker with a real vision to create something awesome. I've heard that Guillermo del Toro is interested in creating such a film and doing it right - and I think he'd be the perfect person for the job. It's tricky though, it will require a sort of balancing act between what is shown and what is suggested (to keep the 'beyond comprehension' of it all) - so I'm thinking sound design, playing with settings and lighting, maybe an oceanic setting would provide the mystery and depth needed.

I watched it 3 times because I kept forgetting that I watched it (I did the same thing with Constantine) BUT the second time I watched it I swear the villain was genuinely supernatural and the husband eventually believed the wife because he saw it for himself but when I watched it a 3rd time it was back to being her losing her mind in the harsh conditions. It really messed me up because I can’t find anything about an alternate ending being shot.

I enjoy psychological horror however I do think it's played out at the minute. This is a video game so not horror movies exactly but I'm a big fan of Alone in the Dark (the original especially) and there was a recent reboot that I also very much enjoyed. However it shifted what in the original was very much supernatural with only a thin thread of psychological horror, that was more of a misdirect if anything, into a story that focused specifically on the psychological element for much of the middle act. On it's own this is fine to me. But in a world where so much of the hyped up popular horror media (new or old) on the internet these days, is psychological horror, it felt cheap and tired to place extra focus on that small element of it. So I don't dislike the subgenre but I do think it could take a break at this point in horror as a whole, not just in movies. It might actually feel less played out if only focusing on one medium, I don't know. (side note, I'd argue Halloween actually had more in common with a gothic story than your typical slasher initially. Michael Myers was essentially a human shell for an inhuman, supernatural force of evil from ancient times. This force invades the supposed normality of a typical modern setting which becomes totally unfriendly and dangerous on Halloween night. I've always felt Halloween likely took some sort of inspiration from Dracula actually. Lots of similar elements. Ancient evil force in the shape of a man, eccentric Dr attempting to stop this force only he has any sort of understanding of, Mina/Laurie in contrast to Lucy/Laurie's friends. I'd seriously argue that after Halloween 6 that whole series totally lost itself and subsequently became more of a typical slasher than what it had been up to that point)

This was an interesting exercise. I realized from this that I apparently like period-piece horror, because my S level was Folk, Gothic, Western, Witch, and Psychological, 4 of 5 of witch are usually and/or necessarily set in past eras, so that's interesting. I love Westerns anyway, and horror Westerns are great, and there just aren't enough of them. The bottom, E level of my list is Comedy, Christmas, and Werewolf. Aside from some classics, for whatever reason, I hate holiday themed things. Movies, Music, Board Games, Clothing, just about anything really. And I like the holidays, themselves (especially Halloween), but put a holiday theme on something not directly related to the holiday, and I'm out. And, while there are some great Horror Comedies (Tucker and Dale, Sean of the Dead, etc), most of the time, when I see something is a Horror Comedy, it just gets stuck in my watchlist purgatory. I like Horror. I like Comedy, but something about the combo doesn't do it for me.
