the song is the story of the 3 stages of addiction. The buildup, the excitement of getting the drugs initial euphoric feeling. The middle part of the song is the high itself, beautiful melodies that put you in your feelings. The need for more. The end of the song is the downfall and the collapse that happens when you withdraw or have no more drugs and how the drugs literally become the most important thing. you continue to chase that middle part of the song. The way this song is structured and put together is nothing shy of a masterpiece.

I would add that the 1st and 2nd part is from the drugp point of view, the bridge is the High and hangover and the final part is the ultimate high and death. In the studio version you can get it clearer. It's an amazing story telling.

To me the song is in 4 parts. the drug is screaming at the addict and the addict gives in That is where you see the song slow down and that is the euphoria After that you have the addict screening back at the master But he only gets to scream back for a short time and then the master takes over and Screams back at the addict "the puppet"

This video is from the movie they did called "Through The Never" (which is also a name of one of their songs). It is a movie that is of a couple of their concerts that were edited together with extra stuff added in. This song is LEGENDARY; not just in their catalog but in heavy metal / rock genre overall. There is not "official" music video for his song as it was on an album that predates them doing music videos. So don't let the "movie" cut of this song lure you away from lyrical meaning of the song. It's overall about drug / substance abuse. Reference the line: "Chop your breakfast on a mirror". Drugs are the 'master' and you are the 'puppet'...

They are amazing live still to this day! I’ve seen them live at least half a dozen times over the years. First time was in 1986 and latest was 2018. Their song whiplash from their first album has a line that says “ we’ll never stop. We’ll never quit cuz we’re Metallica”. They haven’t yet! James is a master at writing lyrics. They are usually deeply personal to James but vague enough for the listener to interpret unto themselves.

Appreciate you guys giving a shout out to them for allowing reaction videos. Because people that grew up listening to deep metal and rock songs love seeing people's first reactions to songs. Kill’em All, Ride The Lightning, and Master of Puppets all had incredible impact from Cliff Burton the original bassist, who was classically trained and brought an orchestral feel and approach to Metallica. If the opportunity arises, go and see Metallica. I have seen over 1,000 concerts in my life, and I can honestly say there is NOTHING quite like a Metallica concert. I saw them play Woodstock 1994 and they do a song where the crowd starts chanting “Die! Die!” (The song is Creeping Death) and being in the middle of a crowd of 300,000 people chanting that was something I could never forget, even if I wanted to. I live all music, and seeing musicians, nothing is like a Metallica show.

I'm a little late to the party, but your comment about rock giving time to experience the instruments as a voice was spot on. I feel like rock in particular wants each member to have their moment in the spotlight. You don't get that with other genres because it is more of a solo experience even if the soloists have a band their name is the headline (Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, etc.). Rock, though, is typically not a person's name but a name that binds each player and the lead singer wants to showoff his bandmates' talents because they are a team. (Sure, there are exceptions: Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne, Rob Zombie.)

James writes a lot of things based on his experiences. I believe this song is written about Kirk (guitarist) and his addiction to coke. The master is the drug and addiction, “twisting your mind and smashing your dreams, blinded by me you can’t see a thing” and then the other line “come crawling faster, obey your master, your life burns faster, obey your master” As they have gotten older, James has talked about suicide, addiction, abuse, religion, upbringings, and even his own struggles and his band mates. He’s been in and out of rehab many times, but today he’s in a great place getting even more help and spreading the awareness of mental health and so much more Their new album 72 Seasons has some INSANE tracks!! Powerful and just really deep hitting lyrics, keep going down the rabbit hole This video was from the movie Through The Never, this is not their official video.

This video is from the movie "Through the Never". It is basically a Metallica concert & this kid running through the Purge. There is no official music video for Master of Puppets. They also did one with Stranger Things as this song was quite front and center in a key scene of Season 4. I'm not going to be saying more about that to avoid spoiling anything of the show. You have been missing out on a lot if you haven't done the Metal scene at all. There are so many songs to choose from... Take a dart and close your eyes and you'll hit another classic.

The song is literally about hard drug addiction. "Chop your breakfast on a mirror."? Cocaine, brother... And then "Needlework the way, never you betray..." possibly a referencen to Heroine there. But no man, this song in 2024 is 38 years old. Released in 1986 on the album "Master of Puppets" became one of Metallica's signature Hits. For a great cover of this song, check out LILIAC's cover from March 2021, the 35th anniversary of the album. But here's the catch, the vocalist is a young lady, only 21-ish at the time, but with the pipes to pull it off.
