I was 15 and had just gotten my learners permit! The old man let me drive. While waiting at a red light, I saw a car travelling too fast coming down the hill and slam into a car waiting in the opposite direction. Both cars careened into our lane! I floored it with my whole family in the car and performed my best Starsky & Hutch maneuver, hard right. Once my Dad figured out what had just happened, He said, "Good job!" and let me drive the whole 2 hours (thru NYC) to my Aunt & Uncles house on Long Island! I popped in my newly purchased VH "1984" cassette and we all enjoyed the ride!

People who didn’t grow up in the late 70’s and 80’s don’t understand just how big concerts were. Looking out over this crowd all you see is people having a rock and roll good time. No cell phones being held up. We just rocked out with the bands. It was great and we loved it. Oh for a Time Machine.

@@passiveaggressivenegotiato8087 Nothing has really changed - it's still boring as fuck between the fun occasions. The only difference is that the fun occasions are hyped up by social media beforehand (so much so that they are actually an anti-climax). We knew this gig was THE event of the year - all those great bands in 1 day, before the times where EVERYTHING was carefully marketed and controlled to squeeze every penny out of concert-goers. These were the glory days, before the big money men got hold of festivals and turned them into miserable uniform manufactured "events" where you behave how they want you to and hand over large sums for the pleasure. This gig cost £16.00 entry and we just slept in a field, no tents and set nearby hedges alight to keep us warm before we sobered up enough to get home. Good times.

@@Mr.MFuckingYTchangedmyname Good post. I think the biggest buzz kill for concerts are Fire Marshalls nerfing the volume too much, so that you can hear a kaleidoscope of awful singing/screaming all around you during the whole concert. This was NOT case back in the 1980s. It might not be this way in cool locations, but this is the case in typical boring fly-over cities like mine. It's an outrageously over-priced karaoke party; where thousands sing at once. This actually caused Tom Petty to stop performing 'last dance with mary jane' at concerts, cause he got sick of a bunch of jacked-up shitty 'oh my my, oh hell yeah'

Early VH shows were totally jaw dropping. To see not only the band, but the entire audience going crazy. They always seemed 10 feet tall to me. When they were here for the Oakland concert in 1983 (or '82?) my buddies knew that they were staying at the Marriot Hotel. After the show we went and waited for the limos. DLR, MA and Manager Monk rolled up, stumbled out and were all smiles as my friend's camera flashed away. Monk walked over, grabbed the camera, and yanked the film out to expose it, which did not really surprise me... What _did_ surprise me a little was that Roth was a couple of inches shorter than me. I'm only 5'9". Wish they could slow down the tempo a bit. Such as when they soundcheck without a huge audience in front of them. Listen to the following if you also want to hear Roth actually *_sing_* : "The mighty Van Halen soundchecks on their first tour, 1978. Rock Candy (!), ATBL, On Fire". Without the quotes.

I know personally that being about 8feet in front of 2 -4/12 cabs and a 100watt tube peavey 5150 that the air those cabs moves vibrates your body and the hair on your legs when playing. So I can only imagine the air all those side fills and back line cabs are moving. I bet they literally feel tingling all over their bodies.

What a great band, album, and tour. Thanks for the chance to see them on the 1984 tour. This is the album along with Eddie and Randy Rhoads and blizzard of ozz that got me interested in guitar. Thanks so much for this great video! It makes me wonder what Fave would have sounded like on the next album, 5150. To bsd the band didnt stay together after this tour.

I got some of that 'constantly on' never shutting up in me, and yeah, when I see it in someone else it reminds me how effing annoying and hard to be around it is. I admire Roth's talent and think he is a rare old school showman. It's all part of the package in the end.

Is it just me or is alex van halen one of the most underrated drummers in rock and roll??? I feel like he never got the credit he deseved. Maybe because everybody worshipped his brother. Crazy.

Alex really played for the song without overplaying, even on songs like Hot for Teacher where he is technically playing a ton. It always fit. He had an amazing ability to follow the guitar in both style and tempo as needed. Most Van Halen songs end much faster than they started, which is why I think a lot of drummers don’t like his style. While some worship the robotic playing of Rush, I always preferred the wooden rollercoaster wild ride of Van Halen.

@patrickmulligan7994 Not at all. Rush was every bit as good (very arguably better) than Van Halen even in VH's prime, and certainly had a much longer career & therefore larger music catalogue. I'll grant that it's a bit hard to directly compare them, as Rush was an art/concept/prog band who could rock, while VH were straight-up, ballz-out rockers who at their best, made art. The problem with this first incarnation of VH is that the coke & booze excesses - not to mention DLR's ridiculously overinflated ego - sabotaged them too early. Whatever partying Rush did, they always made sure that the music came first. To me, that shows more respect for your fans. Bottom line, both bands were immensely talented, and are sorely missed. 😢💛
