KGW crew experiences earthquake on the mountain
As the warnings from geologists about the high-probability of an imminent eruption caused alarm, Washington State officials began closing the area around the mountain to recreation, tourism and logging. Not everyone supported the closures and evacuation.
This video documents the area of the closure, much of which was later destroyed by the eruption.
At 7:45 into the video, while preparing for an interview in blizzard conditions, the KGW news crew experienced one of the many earthquakes that swarmed the mountain as seismic activity increased. Reporter Boyd Levet recorded his account of the quake for a later news report.
As the weather partially cleared the crew surveyed the mountain for signs of earthquake triggered avalanches.
13:30 into the video shows hikers on some lower elevation trails, logging operations that continued and campgrounds that were still in operation. Note: this section was shot on 16mm film and captures some of the idyllic areas of the mountain that were lost to the eruption.
This is newly restored video from the KGW archives in full HD.
It is presented in it's original 4x3 registration.
