Ray was my second cousin on my moms side, never had the pleasure of meeting him but always heard stories about him from my gramma.

My Husband has kin folks like this in Southern Illinois & Kentucky. They are some of the nicest, most caring, giving people one could ever hope to know. Honest to goodness GOD fearing people. The way it SHOULD be..

They were old school Appalachian people, not evangelicals. The Jack Tales actually go back to pre-Christian Celtic times in the isles. Many of Ray's traditional folk tales are the same as ones that have been preserved in Wales and Ireland.

It was hard to understand him with his strong mountain draw but he could sure tell a story. We would sit around the campfire pickin and he would tell stories as well. This all happened on Beech Creek. He knew his herbs, and how to live off the land.

When I was in the Army in NC we found Ray in a Natl' Geographic mag. and so we went up and found them and befriended them. Rosa wrote me up until when they passed. Not sure where their son is but I assume he is carrying the tradition along up in Beech Mtn.

Ted, one of the sons passed. 12 years ago my class at Appalachian State University spent the fall semester filming and documenting Rosa and Ted's storytelling and ballad singing. The best semester of my academic career. Rosa was a sweatheart.

@@matthewweaver5610 This breaks my heart to hear. I did not know Ted passed as well. What a loss, they really were some of the kindest people Id ever met. No judgment, no meanness, like they were almost zen masters. Thanks for sharing that with me. They inspired me to play Appalachian music and now I have a band because of them. I was hoping to meet Teddy again. What did he pass from?

I remember stringing up green beans, they are called leather britches. You can't do it anymore, to much moisture ln the air. They mildew...
