As said above, he was terminally ill here, and they weren't sure he'd remember the words fully or get through the song, but he did, Ronnie whispers, "Well done Luke" at the end. He passed away a few weeks later. His diction in his peak years was unparalleled, really pushed out every word like he meant it, through folk songs from Ireland, UK, Canada and America.

How Luke was able to do this while so terribly ill is nothing less than a miracle. It's clear he's even struggling to stand. For this reason the performance was pre-recorded, rather than broadcast live, but he somehow managed it all in one take. Observe at 7:14 Ronnie Drew (with the big grey beard) mouthing along to the lyrics in case he had to take over. It's clear from the pain on everyone's faces what a sad occasion this was, but Luke remained great right to the end.

Another Dubliners suggestion. Jim McCann was a member of the group from 1974-79, before his solo career. Perhaps his best known song is 'Grace'. kzitem.info/news/bejne/u6l93mGHoaGJfqg I would tell you what it's about, but Jim does that at the start of the video. This clip is taken from the Dubliners' 40th Anniversary concert in 2002. Sadly it was one of Jim's final performances before permanently losing his voice to cancer.

Interesting that you say you can't pick up all his words, as he's generally thought of as having great diction. I'm from England so maybe closer to the accent though. Either way he's one of the greatest singers this world has ever seen.

Bavarian here. Luke Kelly got me into this music and the language a lot, for many reasons, one was that he was easy enough to understand. And by god what did I understand.
