the book never framed him as a father figure tho. wasn't it dumbledore who said in that long confession at the end of OotP that he was some combination of a brother and father? sirius had spent 12 years in isolation and harry had spent all his life craving parental figures, so they both probably projected their own needs onto each other.

I know Sirius isn't perfect but considering everything he went through (being the disgrace of his family, losing his best friend/brother, everyone (including Remus) thinking he would willingly betray him AND Lily AND his godson Harry, finding out his best friend Peter was a traitor, spending 12 years in the worst place ever while innocent and grieving, escaping without being able to take a breath outside after being locked up for so long etc...) I wouldn't blame him for wanting to see parts of James in Harry. I cannot even imagine what it must feel like to lose your best friend and meet his son who's a carbon copy of him. I think his reaction is pretty normal and understandable considering (even though he WAS wrong at times). I don't think he loved Harry any less when he noticed his differences between him and his dad. Also, I love how he managed to stay a child at heart and keep his sense of humor after being through hell and back. Yo can you guys tell Sirius is my favorite character or nah? 😂
@PunkHime89
6 жыл бұрын
Honestly people often forget about the unsaid underlying mental issues that go on in HP. I’m no expert, but even I can tell Sirius was mentally affected by spending 12 years in Azkaban. Sirius might have wanted to be a father figure when Harry was a baby, but he lost the ability to become that when his mental growth was stunted and fractured.

I feel like because Sirius was carted off to azkaban like less than 24 hours after James and Lily died, and was in a cell surrounded by dementors for 12 years, he probably didn't have the capacity to move on. So when he escapes and finds Harry, he projects the image of James onto him as a way to cope. And Harry takes whatever kind of love/attention he can get, especially from the guy named as his godfather. I feel like if things had been different, Sirius might have been a better guardian and more responsible in taking care of Harry, because I don't think Lily would have let someone who she thought couldn't handle it take care of her son.
@SnowyWolborg
6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. A friend betraying him, two of his other friends dying, and his last friend going through life as anxoutcast with nowhere to live while Sirius stays in Azkaban for 12 years? All of that broke something inside him, so it's understandable why he seems like he's still stuck at 20 in some ways.

Suzanne Dupras Agree. He’s a great character and he does care for Harry.... but definitely not enough. His world revolves around his illness, instead of simply living with it, so he doesn’t really make an effort to be in Harry’s, despite how Harry should be one of the most important people in his life. I feel like he devolved as a human being after James’ death, and without them he never tried to be different. I think the fight in the last book, when Remus tried to join the trio on their quest, was allot of Harry venting his frustration with Remus because of it. Harry’s whole life he WANTED to be cared for, and here was this man who should have done it, who had every right to simply send him a card, visit him, let him know he was loved, get him a freakin ice cream cone, but he never did. And even after they met, it was always Remus the teacher, Remus: Sirius’ friend. And here was Remus looking like he was gonna do the same to his own flesh and blood. It really boiled Harry and he just tore Remus a new one.

@@bluefire9147 I know this is nine months later but THANK YOU!!! Lupin gets way too much sympathy from the fandom. Snape as well, you can love a character without putting them on a pedestal. All the adults in the Harry Potter books have glaring flaws. I feel like people expect book characters to be perfect parents in a way that is not achievable in real life. Hagrid and Arthur have some pretty major faults as well. Hagrid is probably the LEAST responsible adult in the whole series. He keeps dangerous pets that have the ability to kill around a school full of children then proceeds to tell three eleven year olds how to get past a three-headed dog and doesn't even try to stop him. Arthur and Molly let Harry return year after year to a home they knew he was being emotionally abused and neglected. They took him in for a few days each summer that doesn't make them Harry's family. Lupin as you said is far too wrapped up in his own issues to be anything other then a professor to Harry. Sirius was extremely flawed yes, but there is no parent on earth who can say they are not flawed. Sirius made Harry feel loved in a way no other character did in the series and that is evident by the way he constantly goes to Sirius for advice and tells him things he doesn't even tell his best friends. If my relationship with my father was fictionalised I am 100 percent positive people could find glaring faults in that too. But, at the end of the day I know he's on my side in a way no one else is save for my mother and that is what Sirius gave Harry. That is what makes him the closest thing Harry had to a father. Was he perfect, no? But, lets be honest James wouldn't have been either. No parent is. Again sorry for the rant, but I've got a lot of built up anger about this

5:24 it makes complete sense in context, it's not stupid like you imply. He's young and is assuming that the government and the paper are actually about news and have the people's best interests in mind, so of course he'd assume things about voldemort would be treated as big news. also, calling him "salty" is too dismissive - he was traumatised and had his innocence stolen by what happened a month ago, and is still having nightmares and flashbacks about it, so it makes perfect sense that he'd feel betrayed and abandoned by being left out of the loop while everyone else was included. He's going through horrible mental and emotional pain, and is being given no support AT ALL.

Yes, thank you! I’m so tired of people calling Harry a whiny teenager. He’s dealing with PTSD after an extremely traumatic event and instead of being given therapy and comfort, he’s sent to his abusive relatives, and kept isolated. *Of course* he feels as though he’s been cast aside. There’s a difference between someone suffering from a mental disorder, and someone behaving like a bratty teenager. And the number of people there are, that fail to grasp this concept just boggles the mind. I found that most of the people that don’t find Harry annoying in this book, are those who have suffered PTSD, depression, or anxiety themselves. They said that Rowling nailed Harry’s grief and trauma, and that they were able to connect with Harry on a personal level. I myself have never experienced any of the above, but I’m *trying* to understand. It’s actually quite alarming that there are people who are impatient and annoyed by Harry, instead of being sympathetic to his suffering.

Luna Lovegood Same! I don’t have PTSD or anything other than low levels of Dermatilomania, but I have family members who suffer depression, anxiety, and panic attacks. Even when I first read the fifth book when I was a teen, I never felt harry was being “emo”, it felt normal and justified. I didn’t understand what the terminology and health issues were, but I really did understand that a person needed to have an emotional consequence to having 1-killed your teacher accidentally 2-endured extreme violence and poisoning 3-faced traumatic, war like events and 4-having witnessed a classmates death. I just didn’t see how my fellow readers hated this side of Harry, when I believed him to be the most real side of him yet.

I totally agree that Sirius wasn't a father figure. I actually find Sirius so interesting, because his view and relationship with Harry is really unhealthy for both of them. Sirius has had his brain melted in jail for 12 years, and came out of jail looking for his best friend and is trying to turn Harry into James unconciously. I'm so glad Molly was so protective over Harry and kept him away from Sirius's shenanigans. And Harry is so unlove by his family, that he latches on to any bit of information he can get about them and anyone connected to his parents. It's such a trainwreck. I hope you enjoy the 6th and 7th book! They're both my faves.

If it makes you feel any "better," centaurs in mythology had a pretty solid reputation for stealing women off and raping them. I totally get what you mean about Sirius not feeling like a father figure and seeing too much of James in Harry. But I think the reason why Harry was so happy to have him in his life was because for the first time, EVER, he had a family member who loved him and his parents. The Dursleys never gave him that. (not a spoiler) Someone in the next book mentions Sirius’s James obsession (? is that the right word? lol), so don’t think that their relationship wasn’t supposed to be that way.

Being fair, Lupin was probably more of a father figure to Harry than anyone else. Sirius was Harry's real link to his father, and his future family and happiness. As Dumbledore said, a wonderful relationship tragically cut short before it had a chance to start. Also, yeah, the problem with double-agents is that by definition, you know that they're betraying someone they've pledged allegiance to. So where does that leave you exactly? Luna grows on you, in the way that a weird but genuine person does. 'Love' might be a little excessive. 'Snitch'. Great choice of words there. Your subconscious continues to somehow predict far ahead of your page number. Also, whats-her-boiled-face is also implied to have been drugged. I always felt she got the raw end of the hate from the characters and the readers. "Is that seriously how he dies?" - very poor choice of words. Yes. Other plot twists. Unless there aren't any - wouldn't that be the ultimate twist? Also a bunch of other praises to your subconscious that I can't sing because - you know - spoilers. See you in a year. number 6 gonna be gud.

I can’t wait for you to read The Half Blood Prince, Harry is SO mature in that book, I love how she made Harry kinda shellfish in OoP bc she just keeps representing how he grows through the books. I don’t know, I just love the change of heart between the 5th and the 6th book

If you're still looking for Dolores Umbridge's comeuppance, you actually got it. Because it's a young adult series at this point, I guess JK Rowling couldn't really be specific about it. BUT. In mythology, centaurs are actually known for raping human women. Take that at what you will, but she's carried off at the end of the book by centaurs.

I love how much you love Ron! He is such an under appreciated character, and the fact you understand that his flaws make him a stronger character makes me so happy! It seems like so few people give Ron the love he deserves, and I love that you like watching him succeed as much as I do!

I had such a delayed reaction to Sirius dying. I triple read the sentence and just cried for the rest of the night 😭 I had no idea he was gonna die, despite knowing all the others (except Cedric since in my class someone spoiled that Oof).

I feel like you kind of glossed over Dumbledore's speech re: Kreacher. The whole point of it was that Sirius, while nice to Harry, had deep personal flaws that ultimately lead to his death, with the primary one of those being his disrespect and abuse of his House Elf.

Also, cute little story: I bought this book the day it came out in Australia in 2003. It was one of the most wonderful memories of my life. Anyway, I was about halfway through the book one night, when the hand-cutting-while-writing-in-detention scene popped up. I was mistreated terribly by teachers in high school, so this cut deep (pun intended). Anyway, I became so enraged by Dolores Umbridge in that moment, that I actually threw the book across the room and it knocked the DVD player off the top of my TV. Good times! Also, I imagined Dawn French as Umbridge and I swear to God it was perfection.

Have to agree, never saw him as a father figure. I feel Mr and Mrs Weasley were more parental figures for Harry. Plus Hagrid did so many amazing things for Harry 😭

Honestly Sirius was only around for literally 3 books and in 1 of those everyone thought he was trying to kill Harry. And harry was at a boarding school or at the dursleys' 98% of that time. He 100% was someone Harry looked to for support and guidance and i think if they had more time he might have grown into a real father figure to harry. They never really got a chance to form that bond they were definitely very close but I think they just never really had the time to develop the really close connection that the fandom thinks is there
