Hi Claire I hope you don’t mind me giving a few ideas for keeping Zach organised at school. If you colour in his timetable with each subject having a different colour then buy zip folders for the core subjects with the same colour zip I.e. maths is blue, zip folder has a blue zip, then put everything he needs for that subject in that folder it makes packing his school bag so much easier. He just looks sees what colour folders he needs and then packs them rather than having to remember text books, work books, calculator etc. I hope that makes sense and is helpful x

My daughter starts High school in September too. She's my youngest. It's very different at high school and very closed off to parents compared to primary school. I know with my older ones we really missed the reading cafes, parent workshops, school plays, sports days etc. It's so sad they expect them to grow up so quickly. It's a huge jump. I think as mum's we just worry forever about them. I'm not sure that ever gets easier. I'm still just as protective of my adult kids xx

Children adapt really well to secondary school. My son used a scientific calculator from year 7 to year 11. Your son will be fine. My son had to get the bus to school/home and even though I was worried he did well and knew what he needed for the day. He has adhd and autism and barely forgot stuff throughout school years (I would help him the day before when he started). As a parent we always worry doesn't matter their age there's always something. Don't think too much about it ❤

I know how you feel when the house is untidy / needing cleaning, it plays on my mind too. Maybe it would help if you viewed cleaning your house as part of your job and gave it a weekly time slot and created a cleaning plan for it. Instead of feeling out of control and seeing the cleaning of your own house as an extra and something you have to fit in around your job and children, it would become part of your working schedule. xx

My daughter has always used her scientific calculator and they also do a calculator exam paper at GCSE. She also used it in science. So, hopefully it won’t have been a complete waste of money 🤞I’m sure he will smash secondary school, I’m nervous about my youngest starting in September but school have assured me they will look after her and not to worry! 😅 xxx

My daughter started secondary school last September. She has ASD and ADHD. The best thing you can do is get a meeting with your SEN department. I say this as a mum and as SEN support staff. Make sure they know you are aware that ADHD is classed as disability, therefore a child can not be punished for anything that maybe to do with this. We have an agreement that I Meg forgets her PE kit we can drop it up. At Megan's school you can't drop things in for your kids if they forget It. But I have an agreement that I can. Just make yourself aware of the SEN code of practice. My husbands a SEN teacher and I worked in both main streams and SEN schools up until last year. If you need any advice happy to give you my email. You have got this though 💪

Hi Claire. Apologies, I'm so behind on your videos! It's so easy to get overwhelmed at home. Always so much that needs to be done I find. I definitely find that what I eat has a huge impact on how I feel. We don't kill spiders either, always try and evict them. Oh I hate those false widows though, we always get loads of those in our house and they terrify me. My girls have household tasks to do too. Oooh what are the sausages that you get? I have allergic reactions to the preservatives in sausages so I've had to stop eating them.

My two children definitely use their scientific calculator for Maths and Science at school and for exams even for Geography GCSE they needed it too. My eldest is now doing A-Level Maths and needed a different one for that.

I feel your worry about high school…. My daughter has just left year 13 and starting Uni in September. Yes they definitely use the calculator in maths ….they even use it in geography… GCSE level anyway. High school is definitely a change….. I felt the biggest change in year 8…. I felt year 7 they were still adjusting …. Then the next change was GCSE year….. that was year 9 for my daughter but each school starts them at different years 9 or 10. Definitely get him to get his stuff sorted the night before to help him keep organised…. I felt high school gave very little chance to ‘forget’ something or not doing homework. It is full on especially homework he will need somewhere to work quietly and adjusting to their best schedule to study took sometime…….. my daughter always worked best studying on nights even on weekends. It is a big step but one he will soon adjust to.

I used a calculator myself from age 12 through university. And I’m 52 but I’m U.S. for science and math. Scientific. Graphing calculator optional. Now required. Scientific calculator always needed.

Different country but yes my son in an adjusted learning class used a scientific calculator at 11 $20 and then 14 used a graphing calculator $129. They are not an annual purchase. The age 11 calculator almost died a few month before age 14. But it was revived. But lasted all 3 years and then graphing meant for 4 years. There were moments we could not use calculator and then sections we had to use calculator for standardized tests. Always needed for homework. The school always specified the exact one cause it’s easier for the entire class to follow along with instructions in use. He lost his graphing calculator from high school before the SAT. But the middle school calculator would do, it was approved for testing purposes. Even they have a list of ones okay. He might have been given a spare calculator for the day? They later found his graphing calculator a few weeks later. I didn’t want to shell out $129 and glad they eventually found it. In the U.S. no uniforms. In our district. And he isn’t at a tuition school. So it’s just Chromebook insurance $30. PE uniform the school hands them out after you pay the $20. Shoes costly here could be over a hundred and may need a second pair for PE classes. Ear buds $10 and up. Water bottle encouraged or spending on vending water. Cafeteria money as it’s used up cause no time really to go back and forth to locker and get to places on time between class periods. They have free and reduced lunches and breakfasts even if it’s hard on families. It’s dependent on income. These are the grades that the kids benefit from school a tshirt or school hoodie/brand hoodie. They only need 2, cause they wear over tshirt. Watch, wallet even if mostly empty just to get used to carrying it round. We managed to avoid the cell phone almost the entire first year of high school 15 years old. Because they had their school supplied chrome book year round and he had a tablet with stuff preloaded. Backpacks I just buy the jansport or similar good name for a backpack from their website and they last years. I bought 2 between age 11- last year of high this year. The only reason I bought 2 was in middle they had a chrome book case and in high school didn’t have and I wanted a backpack that had a more protective sleeve for the Chromebook. He switched back to the one without the more protective sleeve and knock wood it’s been fine. His classes don’t have physical heavy hardcover textbooks, maybe a novel/notebooks/thin folders … It is all online textbooks. So it does not need protection from things inside the backpack like I thought. ✊ 🪵. 7 years and only needed 2 bags. It’s $15 a year when you look at it that way. And he uses the spare backpack for activities or trips. I said which solid color do you want and he picked. I wanted them not dated looking. If I bought a $15 backpack it would break mid year and I’d have to replace. And honestly one bag might have made it through all the years. One year was completely remote. It’s good to change once in a while I guess. Every parent is nervous when they go off to a new school building at a new level. The school will reassure you they will take care of things. Worrying won’t prevent something happening to another person. The only thing you can control is your own self. And get things done on time so they are not stressed or feel they did something wrong.
