You're better off using google maps with your videos because this "ATC" map is pretty useless. I'm an FAA controller (although not at New York approach), but we don't use airway lines like here or coastlines like here which just clutter the scope and would never be depicted. And why would you depict 31 localizers when they're using other runways here? If this is confusing and useless to an FAA controller it's going to be even more confusing and useless to others.

I think this depends on whether you are in the USA or not. American pilots and controllers are used to saying numbers like "twenty-two" or the callsign "Brickyard forty-two thirty-one," but it doesn't happen much in other countries where there are a variety of accents and/or English is not the first language. If I were the controller, I would've called Volaris "eight-eight-zero" just because that's what he, as a non-American, is used to hearing.

Tower repeatedly applied an unnecessary public roasting, the guy made a mistake that was a bit bonehead, but adding “that guy” is in or out of your way is unclassy, he can hear it and he’s trying to refocus. Stay classy, people make mistakes and paperwork are for ones like that, it’s easy to roast pilots as your sitting in a chair, not suggesting atc is easy, just saying cut the guy some slack with the sarcasm. I hate (ha. ha.) when people assume hate in others so I won't claim that about the ATC here. I do think it _may_ have been a little over-cautious to delay 4231's takeoff clearance with 880 still over 6 miles out. I think it also pushes the bounds of protocol slightly to basically point out 880 like that and hold everything until he's out of the way, so the big kids can play again. It might have been the right choice, but i don't think he needed to go into detail like that.

How frequent is a VOR approach in JFK ? Given it is an busy international airport it's a bit of a shame that the ILS are not constantly used for precision approach. A VOR approach in busy airspace is questionable, and not leaning toward safety.
@kukulkanlordofcas4931
2 жыл бұрын
The "Canarsie Approach" is the colloquial name for the JFK VOR or GPS RWY 13L/R approach. It involves tracking a VOR and lead-in lights northeast up the coastline, then a turn, assuming visual contact with the airport, to the right to line up with either runway 13L or 13R, as assigned. It's a bit of an odd one, as it requires tracking perpendicular to the intended runway of landing, and a turn within 3nm of the field, but anything in the name of noise abatement. As you can tell by the name, you can track this either by VHF NAVAID or GPS. Many approaches, back when RNAV GPS came around, followed this scheme of "VOR or GPS". I assume they just say "VOR 13" because it's shorter and the first acronym in the official name of the approach. It's actually rather common to fly this approach, because some people don't like hearing the airplanes overhead.

Woah, Volaris got it wrong twice! Also, the demand by APP for them to speak up seemed like it might have been because they were more than a little pissed at them (especially at a busy airport like JFK) and wanted no further miscommunication, and observe how wonderfully clearly Volaris (or anyone) can comm if they put some effort into it. What I find funny/puzzling though is the apparent difference in live vs. recording quality. Sometimes we hear nothing but noise, but they're understood. And also the digital compression seems way too high, or is that straight from the source? (I wouldn't think so if it's still analog technology used.)

I’ll never forgive Reagan for breaking the ATC union. Not because of the political reasons for doing it/not doing it. But, because ATC is so reliant on the experience and intelligence and TRAINING of the ATC personnel. The president put the traveling public in danger at that time and it disturbs me to this day. Again, I am not judging the necessity of doing it, just the method and the risks accepted in doing that way. Commercial air travel require exceptional people in every critical role to prevent tragedy. That includes the loaders and maintenance folks. We, common folks, forget what is required to make air travel so safe.

When you are told 13L and you see both runway lights you go left, you don't need for charts. More like basic understanding of left and right (or maybe write, who knows). JFK doesn't have a central runway or multiple pairs, in order to get confused. And in the end, a pre-flight reading of the charts, is standard even for amateur pilots, assuming the PIC had never been to JFK before.
@DaveDepilot-KFRG

Spoken like somebody who has never approached a field with pararrel runways, epecially on a bright and sunny day. Some years back, I almost made the same mistake in ISLIP with 33L and 33R but caught myself as I got closer and was able to easily switch since I was in a Piper, and not an airliner. I was very new at the time, but even now, it's not that easy to distinguish which is left and right when you're on a visual during a sunny day and the sun is shining and there are surrounding buildings. Trust me, it's not like flight SIM, the view is much different than you would expect when you're at 1500 or 1600 and 7-8 miles out. As you get closer, it's easier to distinguish, but at JFK, the taxiways are so wide that it makes it even harder, first figure out which are the runways, and then left and right. Personally, when turning base to final more tha 5 miles out, I often don't see the runway and just try to time it and roll out as close to centerline as I could, and then adjust as needed as I get loser. But I'm not flying an airliner, my approach is 80 knots, not 160, so I have a good 4 minutes to correct.
@navarxos86
6 жыл бұрын
While i have to agree with the general idea that it not that easy, it is not that hard. First of all there are the standards. In order to get in the captain's seat on an airliner you need to prove your skill. Parallel runways as everywhere and parallel landing are not uncommon either. You can not swing left and right on final. On certain airports there are even sidestepping procedures. Second, on JFK, 13R is next to the sea and it is considerably longer that 13L. As for the base reference, you are correct,you have to time it sometimes. But, there are two differences. First it is the matter of the weather. METARs show acceptable weather, with good visibility. Second, he was executing Instrument approach.

I might know what confused the pilots to make a landing on 13R instead of 13L. In the scheme, the runway on right side is actually 13L and runway on left side is 13R. I assume the runways are aligned by the point of view of airplane that's taking off or by view from tower. So from the ground, the 13R is actually on the right side and 13L is on left hand side. But on approach, the pilots see the runways from other side, so they see 13R on their left, which might caused the confusion.

ya, i could understand him just fine but it is possible that he confused the English word left.... to the Spanish word for right i know a bit of Spanish thanks to high school forcing ya to take it....in montana (lot more french Canadians than Mexicans) i remember the two words..... have no idea which one is left or right plus..... i mix up left and right as it is....dsylexia but i just dont believe that X-mass lights confused the guy. air ports are lit in a VERY specific way not a pilot....but ive seen airports at night out the window of a jet..... and play a bit of DCS and other flight sims they are really recognizable....by design unless the lights dude liked planes, and made a few thousand foot long "santa taking off" deal..... i dont buy the X-mass excuse think it was a simple mix up..... either in translation, a common left/right mix-up.... or just a derp moment sure, we trust the dudes flying the jet to be experts....we trust them with our lives when we fly but they are still human..... and mistakes have been made before (ps..... isnt the ILS freq different between 13L and 13R? you would think he would notice the ILS (or equivalent system) was off.... or he somehow tuned into the ILS to 13R.....the chart would have the freq, but who looks at the chart for the freq, when the controller tells you every time?

DyingIsMyLatestFashion sure....but you probably have a lot more experience than i do with 2nd languages i know people say they can dream in their 2nd language i live in montana dude..... their is a very slim chance ill need a 2nd language and that also means i never got to practice what Spanish i did know its 99% forgetting now.... :( i know pilots are sposed to be able to speak/read/write fluent english.... but if people are making jokes about how bad this companies english usually is.....they might be skipping some practice tldr.... a person with little experience might confuse words across languages but i ment to say in the OP..."he is a jet driver....probably has more experience than i....and its just a derp out" i still wonder why he didnt know his ILS was way off.... or got the freq wrong for 13L....but right for 13R

For those who think it was not pilot deviation, think again......as per FAA: Pilot deviations can occur in several different ways. Airborne deviations can result when pilots stray from an assigned, heading, altitude, or instrument procedure, or if they penetrate controlled or restricted airspace without ATC clearance. In this case Volaris was cleared to the 13L VOR and cleared to land RW 13L yet lined up for RW 13R. Then almost landing on the wrong runway, you can even hear the 400ft call out before he made the correction after Tower canceled his landing clearance.

Why are people here so fixated about pilot deviation and number to call. The guy is Mexican what do you think the FAA will do ? Remove his Mexican airline pilot licence ? aha you crack me up ! This thing is mostly for GA pilots (they also do the biggest numbers of violations I presumme) and they are all owners of an FAA licence.

It's not uncommon for these and a few other South of the border pilots to pull this, change freq. on there own, cross runways not cleared to, use wrong taxi ways. I've had to go around more times than I can count.

Great job by all. Kudos to the pilot as well. Sometimes we all make a mistake. We rely on each other to catch and fix problems. That pilot and maybe the chief pilots will be reviewing that in great detail and I doubt that pilot will make that mistake again. In the end the system worked and safety was maintained.

Kennedy didn't trust this pilot. Pilot knew he messed up too. So I don't consider this hating on him he wanted to make 100% sure the same 2 aircraft didn't have another conflict of interest. Once was more than enough.

David Michael • That's exactly right. A mistake that could have resulted in multiple fatalities and untold property damage was averted, and ATC instructed and monitored the best way possible in the end. Regarding posts elsewhere about "haters" - the I now believe some people are so victimized by their own shadows that it seems they would rather have a terrible tragedy play out just so no one's feelings were hurt in the discussions afterward.

No number to call given. No need. Mistakes happen, and follow up and resolution requests were all heeded. Human nature dictates, everyone makes mistakes, in every field of work (even brain surgery). A "number" doesn't always need to be called.

Not defending this crew, but the VOR 13L/13R is (IMHO) pretty crappy until one has flown it a few times. It is essentially a circle to land which many airlines only do under visual conditions. Take a look at this video kzitem.info/news/bejne/tJyXs3aFa51ohYI. See the rabbits (sequenced strobes) everywhere? Between 5:36 and 6:00, just as "Minimums, minimums" is called, see the approach lights at 1 o'clock? That is 13R. I'd be willing to bet this wasn't the first time a crew lined up for the wrong runway using this approach.

Yes, but fatigue in combination with stress is not good for anyone. Maybe the coffee machine was broken or the food served was too bad. We don't know what caused the fatigue. Maybe he was in a divorce issue with his wife and hadn't had a good night's sleep.

I dont believe it was a language issue, pilot speaks english. They just got visually confused on the runways, 13L is a little bit hidden in the VOR approach, and the first one you see is 13R
