Gina and I connected years ago through social media, and she has become a friend and confidant-helping me process my own feelings of grief this year when my 13 year relationship came to an abrupt end.
I’m also excited because she will be releasing her book “Moving On Doesn’t Mean Letting Go“ next week on August 22!

Today’s conversation and Gina’s book centers around grief and its many forms, not just around death. Grief is a multifaceted experience-we can feel pain around the loss of a friendship, estrangement with family members, the mourning of the potential of what we hoped our relationships would look like, or the expectations of what we thought our children would grow up to be. We can grieve people who are still alive, still living with us, and who were never born. And our talk today, combined with the tools that Gina gives us in her book, are very powerful.
For me, a couple major takeaways from our conversation today:
•You can’t heal on an island. The importance of community and connection when you are going through a loss is so very important.
•People can only meet you as deeply as they have met themselves. We can’t expect people to feel, understand, empathize or validate our feelings if they have not done the inner work themselves.
•Pay special attention to the tips Gina gives about how to comfort someone who is experiencing loss, things to say when you’re not sure what to say, and her idea about an “anchor item.”
