A gun isn't an 'equalizer' it's an 'escalator'. People who are 'trained' know this. It doesn't magically end an attack, it can arm your attacker, like a knife, or bat, or hammer, etc. A gun, on its own is just a weapon. A weapon is only equal to its operator.

I think America 's so called moral authority (as referred to by Coles) lies more in having enlightened and modern military elites a represented here by this general, than the "public sphere" represented by the intellectuals on the table and the actor-activists. that was a good explanation of the legal framework of detainees as legitimate acts of war. I agree with the appreciation that this segment was better than the show.

"There is a lot of idiots who do not know what they are doing with a gun..." Bill, I am sorry. Are you self-aware enough to say to yourself, "you know, maybe I shouldn't buy a gun because I am an idiot." No one believes they are an idiot. If they say they are an idiot, it is because they are smart enough to know just how much they don't know. I hate it when people say, "they just don't know how to use it and it is their fault when bad things happen." I believe in personal responsibility and taking responsibility, but you and I both know that the majority of people who walk into a gun store with the intent of buying a gun already believe they are smart enough to be able to use it correctly. And these people are the same ones who have a much greater chance of becoming a statistic. If I had my druthers, gun ownership would follow the same rules as car ownership. You have to take classes and prove you are responsible before you are allowed.

I know, I cringed on that one. But alas, the only person we are in a 100% agreement with on all issues, is ourself, and for most people even that's a stretch. The one thing I do agree with though, is that it's a 'it's a damned if you do, damned if you don't' situation. If the intelligence community doesn't pursue these things, then the first time we suffer a major terrorist attack, they're the ones most of the population wants to crucify. But when they do engage in these activities, then people are pissed over the country becoming a police state. Personally, I'm the type who would gladly trade a bit of security for privacy, because I'm of the opinion that bad shit is always gonna happen, and we can't protect ourselves from every little thing that MIGHT harm us. But a lot of people don't see it that way, and even worse....a lot more people want it both ways.
@brettperry3737

I'd just like to add; there's also something to be said for the fact that the enemy we're fighting, is something the world has never really seen before, and thus there isn't a playbook on how to handle the challenges they present. Again, those things don't really matter to me all that much, and I'd prefer not to have our privacy violated regardless of the risk. But it's still something to think about.

+The_Laughing_Man Dude seriously, you don't really understand the constitution, do you? That smartphone is evidence after a crime was committed. Imagine you were killed and recorded your murderer with your phone, do you think it an invasion of privacy for the police to search it for evidence? What about a notebook, if you just apprehended a serial killer, would his notebooks be an invasion of privacy for the police to pry, as well as his videos of the killings? It's fine to be skeptical of one's government, but it boggles the mind the fact that you are so, to the point of hysteria, against the government invading your privacy, yet you have no problems with large Multinational Cooperations, with no obvious supervision, having access to it. If the government is asking Apple for the key to get inside the Bernadino's terrorists smartphone, that means Apple has access to that information if it wants to. And I don't know about you but, little as it is, I'll put my trust in a Democratically elected Government before putting it on a large Multinational private company that owns sweatshops and employs child labor. Between the two, who'd you really wish to be the arbiters of justice in this case? Next time, you'll claim you don't want stop signs or stoplights, because they restrict your freedoms and liberties (and will obviously quote Benjamin Franklin). Yet, being the sheepple I am, I think that those are simple necessary tools that pragmatically help run every day life in modern society.

+William Ross How's that? What made it uninspiring? And what obligation does Bill Maher have to inspiring you? Curious.

+VFX Todd Although I can't stand Republicans, I have noticed that when the entire panel are liberal/dems there's too much consensus to cause deeper debates, Maher has to play the contrarian.

ytubeanon Absolutely. That's why I love his show. I sometimes disagree with Maher, but I also agree with a lot of what he says. Even though he may favor liberal/libertarian views, he still calls out bad ideas whether they come from liberals or republicans.

Everything that Fran Leibowitz said in this entire episode was a platitude or an insult. Everyone else said something of substance, whether I agreed with them or not, but pretty much all Fran had was sarcastic remarks at the expense of people she doesn't like. She condemned the Clintons by saying that when Bill came on the scene in the early 1990's she took one look at him and didn't like him. She seems to be all gut and no brains.

about @14:10 Joanna Coles mocks Judge Judy. The nerve! The latter is smart and fair, from what I ever observed in her small claims television court. It's just a TV show, but I'd trust Judy as attorney general over Loretta Lynch, to be sure.

+wolfgangnz3--agreed; after a week off, I can't believe I watched with so much anticipation, only to be completely let down by such an awful panel trying to push pro Hillary garbage in a last ditch effort to motivate America against Trump. Hillary would be just as bad----both will inspire me to immigrate.

The worst part is their best argument is "vote Hillary or Trump wins". That's not an argument, that's an appeal to fear, a lost in a democratic country.

+Chrysanthus If Hillary is the nominee, I'd honestly rather vote for Trump. At least with him you know where you're standing and you can just cycle him out in 4 years. Plus imagine the hilarity.
@wolfgangnz3

+Illlium I too would vote for Trump over Hillary. Trump is a buffoon but at least you know that beforehand. And things will change for better or for worse. With Hillary, you don't know what you are getting except that nothing will change, and ordinary people will keep on getting screwed.
@Jake007123

I wouldn't vote period. I would not waste my right on voting someone which I don't agree with. Democrats know that's an option and they fear Trump wins because liberals would prefer to not vote over voting Hillary.

hello Mr. Maher. How are you? I've been watching you for a very long time. Your a good person Mr. Maher. I don't know why you gave him 1 mil but that is your business. I don't really like obama anymore and i don't think he really cares which is probably why i don't like him. I think that he has hurt your feelings and that's not nice. He is now officially a hypocrite. You have a big heart. Take a look. You, george clooney. hearts of the Irish. Why won't he do your show. As usual , they care to much about the legacy they leave behind after leaving office. How can i respect this man anymore. You were here before him and will still be here after him. Our country is to much divided into many different pieces for Bernie to make it. I get sad sometimes. Your a smart one Mr. Maher and I appreciate you. I don't like "THAT" Hillary. Don't trust her at all. i did at one time but she made a fool of me. her and bill betrayed us. he deregulated wall street not long before he left. sold us out to the republicans because they said they wouldn't give his wife a hard time when she ran for president. That is what google said bill said was his reasoning. oh, what are we gonna do. Thank you for being a light in the storm. Happy St. Patricks. bye for now! P>S> wasnt it great what LEO said when he got his OSCAR.

The only problem that there might be for giving some of the Guantanamo Bay prisoners trials, is that any evidence that we have against them that was collected as a result of them being tortured would be inadmissible in the courts, that's what they are really scared of. Any that we have evidence against that we gathered without torturing should of course be brought to the states and given a trial. No matter what, they should all be brought to America and we should just close down that entire base and give it back to Cuba, but it is an interesting question as to what we should do with those that we have tortured, but no matter what bring them to the states. And why is Fran Lebowitz going to vote for Hillary? She said she was much more liberal than Hillary and she said she actively dislikes her and her family as people, so why not Bernie? She seems like a natural supporter of Bernie: Liberal democrat who hates the Clintons.

On the last issue of money in politics, the issue is that the Presidential race is widely and constantly covered. We all know who John Kasich is. No one cares … but we know. However, every Senatorial and Congressional race, even Gubinatorial races especially in the midterms, younger voters and college kids just aren't paying attention. Older voters make sure they get out and vote for their party. For those who are undecided, a little bit of advertising goes a long way.

+sickofwashington so because they have been tortured and they can't be tried anymore they should just be kept in Gitmo and keep getting tortured?
@sickofwashington

Khalid Ibn Walid They are not still being tortured, and I say nowhere that Gitmo should remain open. What I did say was the simple answer to the question which was asked of the panel that any moron with half a brain should know, and they never even brought up. The torture of prisoners is illegal for a reason. That reason being that even if that person is clearly guilty of heinous crimes, they cannot tried in federal court, as they would immediately be acquitted, and walk free. Even Khalid Sheikh Mohammed would get to just walk away. What's your solution, Mattlock? Do be thorough...
