For me, the reason why I would develop a VN with Ren’py is its popularity (which means tons and tons of tutorials available that help me figure out this program which for me is still very complicated at times), its versatility and the fact that it has the UI built from the get go. This makes my life easy as an eternal programming noob (because I don’t intent on honing my skills beyond the bare minimum needed for my ideas) who still wants to make a VN. EDIT: Forgot to add the biggest or the second biggest reason, its free.

Technically you can make a survivor horror or a 2d-open world game with character walking around in RenPy. Renpy is more than enough to make visual novels-it has everything you need fast.

Yes for sure! But if you're a lazy dev like me you embrace the (overcomable) limitations :D I do experiment with other engines like Develop and Godot for more "classic" game types. I've also toyed with the idea of using RPG Maker, but it seems hard to not make your game generic. But as always it comes down to effort, I've seen RPG-maker games that look awesome!

If you by disadvantages mean limitations, then I certainly agree! :D
