I'm not in the US, but it's not uncommon for where I live for someone to go on a "working vacation" wherein you sign up for a short project where you travel somewhere, work half the time and then relax the other half. Did this myself for a festival. I helped set up the tents and equipment for a festival in Norway, 3 paid-for meals a day, free accomodation in a cozy summer home with a sauna, and once the festival opened I got a production pass too. Boy, you sure feel like royalty showing your badge to a guard who just opens up the grate wall things to let you just phase through the whole area like a ghost. A lot of the time it’s really obvious that people on the AA subreddit are just reaching out for connection. Nobody would EVER go up to a nervous looking person in a meeting and say “you are SICK, SICKLY SICK, VERY SICK. You judge too much you dry drunk! You are the problem!” Like your sponsor might get into stuff but most people would never scold/ lecture you like r/aa, you’d have an established relationship and at the very least they’d know your fucking name. I think the biggest problem with the first one is how often he has the parents over. I have a grandma very similar to them, but we only really go to see her around twice a year. I believe that you can go through the formality of seeing them every now and then just to keep in touch, but some distance should definitely be in place so that they don’t rub off too much. Knowing my grandmother has made me more resilient when it comes to criticism. OP can still have the family visit the grandparents on occasion, but there definitely needs to be more boundaries in terms of how often and how intimate said visits are. A simple trip out to eat is VERY different than forcing your child to be practically alone with them for hours. EDIT: In my personal experience it’s also important that you hear out your child when they have issues and validate their experience. Don’t shut them down when they express discomfort to you, and stand up to the grandparents if necessary. My dad’s been extremely good in this regard.

Humans may be inbred in the sense that our population grew drastically after near extinction, but we’re also an incredibly genetically diverse specie which we can tell by the simple fact that we’ve thrived on every continent in a wide variety of ecosystems. Which I think is cool. Because some species have evolved to survive in highly specific environments and conditions which over time has caused them to lose their genetic diversity and made it almost impossible for them to adapt to sudden change. See: dinosaurs. And also giraffes.
