I hope one day every city will be able to supply its own food by even just 1% using agricultural systems like this

@@Furyan Because Hydroponic systems are so healthy and effective?... If they had a balanced soil with a proper microlife it would balance itself and they wouldn't feel the need to integrate predatory insects. These infrastructure are not sustainable and a long-term will only make citizens even more dependant than they are on the system. I live in Quebec and businesses like these are a shame to me. Only there to make a dollar. Any grower that uses a hydroponic setup doesn't care about poisoning their clients. Beware when eating hydro these plants are fed isolated chemicals and have never evolved into an environment like this one!

Arithmetic, Population and Energy - FULL LENGTH ... because of population growth both traditional agriculture and greenhouse agriculture will continue to grow to meet demand.
@MrGoatflakes

Why? I can think of no good reason except to be more resistant to disruption in food supply. They need power in the form of light, heating, and pumping water, use less water than traditional farms probably because of presumably less evaporation, but then that is offset by the need to make plumbing and stuff to transport it around. Then you have massive building costs and maintenance costs. In the dirt you have none of this. And what is unsustainable about farming in the dirt? It removes nutrients from the soil that aren't returned but instead flushed out to sea in sewerage. You have the exact same problem with greenhouses unless they are using sewerage or its derivatives for fertiliser, in that they need to be continuously supplied with fertilisers mined, farmed or synthetically produced from coal, oil, air, water and heat. Unless you do the logical thing and use sewerage. That's the real key to sustainable farming, not basically making a massive fucking grow house. SMH. Oh, if greenhouses are put near the market for their produce, they do reduce shipping fuel and pollution, but by far not enough to justify their existence. That's not to say that I don't think there ever the case for this sort of farm, just in this case it's kind of stupid and wasteful.

Actually I stand corrected, there are definite advantages to freshness, wasted food and flexibility in providing not so shelf stable varieties. That doesn't mean I think it's a good idea for replacing anything but a fraction of vegetable cultivation.

Almost the same price and it's convenient. It's like doing your grocery shopping online and then you just need to pick up, there's a lot of choice not only fruits and vegetables. But they don't have ''sales'' like in the grocery store, so if you are use to buy only things on sale, it's more expensive.

Why do you think this is at all a good thing? Compare it to the alternatives: one using preserved food or two importing from a temperate region. Neither of those need ridiculous amounts of power and expensive buildings and plumbing to run. Just energy to transport or preserve in the first place. This might be a good idea on Mars, or maybe in the South Pole, but otherwise it's just a way for yuppies to get super fresh vegetables at enormous cost in energy.

Geez, I wonder. Why isn't more food grown in expensive heated buildings that use up power for lights and have massive amounts of plumbing? Use your brain. Because it is cheaper and also more environmentally friendly to grow them in the dirt where they get enough rain and sun.

Imagine governments agree on a program to build this farm everywhere as those cover all the need of food, all the works inside are automized and energized from sustainable sources.. The food all the humanity needs would be completely free and sustainable. Then the population would be tripled in 20 years and we would go back to begining.
