My older basement fridge just stopped making ice.....so I replaced every water supply part I could....one by one.....hoping to fix it. It always worked for exactly 1 1/4 buckets of ice and then stopped again. I saw this video....tried the blow-dryer (my icemaker looked exactly like yours) ....and it worked. Thanks for the tip!

Hey RenderQ, you are awesome. I could not get the hair dryer close enough to the black rubber spout. I had to remove the ice maker first. Once I got the hair dryer close enough, it's exactly what you described in the video. A few drops of water came out first and the a chuck of ice, followed by a splatter of water. I put everything back together and now it's all good. Many thanks!

You may or may not be interested in this advice but if you have painful splitting just above your fingernails, you should make it a habit of pushing your cuticles back when your hands are waterlogged (look like raisins). You don't have to go out of your way to soak your hands unless you want to. Your hands will become waterlogged while swimming, bathing, doing dishes, etc... You don't need any special tools to push your cuticles back either. Use your fingernails on your right hand to push back the cuticles on your left hand and vice versa. I mention this because at 1:05 into this video, I see what looks like a split and I can see your cuticle being pulled by your nail. It is normal. As our nails grow, they pull the cuticles. After pushing them back, if your hands are still waterlogged, you can rub your cuticles to get some of it off. After your hands dry, if you feel some sticking up, just carefully trim using a cuticle cutter or fingernail clippers. Just be careful. To you and anyone else reading this, I hope you never feel the pain of splitting cuticles ever again. :)

Thanks so much for your video, Mine was an even easier fix! I read the instructions on my freezer which said to make sure the metal arm was down to engage the ice maker. It was up! So I just put it down, and voila - beautiful icemaking sounds seconds later! Now the mystery is, how did that arm get up? All I can think of is that the last time I checked, the ice bin was super full to capacity, so the ice may have forced it up. Then after all the ice was emptied, it remained in that position. Anyway, you've got a new subscriber. ;)

Using a hair dryer will only temporarily fix this issue. The fill tube should not have frozen in the first place. It will freeze again because the water inlet valve is faulty and causing water to drip into the tube at a slow rate. The proper fix is to replace the water inlet valve after removing the ice from the fill tube. This applies to any refrigerator make or model. I am an an appliance tech with over 25 yrs experience and have seen this thousands of times.
@TheRenderQ

Thanks for sharing your expertise on your professional repair experience! I agree there's probably a leak in the valve. This might be a temporary fix but mine has not re-frozen since I used the hair dryer. It'll probably freeze again but melting the frozen tube got the ice maker working again!

My ice maker quit making ice. I took the water filter out for 24 hours after Whirlpool told me that may fix the problem (since I hadn’t replaced it within the last 6 months). That did not fix it. Our city water is fine so why do I need to keep buying a $50 water filter every six months. Can I just leave out a water filter? I’m going to see if the water line is frozen. Is it hard to locate the water valve? Any special tools to replace it? Thanks so much.

Thanks for some excellent ideas. But I have another question. I'm wondering if this stopped up line is related to another problem I have. I have a steady drip in the refrigerator compartment at the bottom on the back and it drips into the refrigerator floor and freezes in a sheet. I intend to use your ideas in unstopping the line, but I'm wondering if this will also help with the freezing in the refrigerator. We get along fine without the water dispenser, but my wife doesn't like to in the bottom every few months with a hair dryer.

I’m not an expert at fridge repair so I’m not 100% sure about the cause of your leak. But it could be a bad inlet valve. I had a fridge that was leaking water out of the back and replacing the inlet valve completely stopped the leak. @TheRenderQ
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question! I think the ice forms because there may be a slow drip coming from the water supply line. Similar to how water sometimes drips from the water dispenser after you fill a glass. A slow drip over time accumulates as ice in the tube. Just about 2 months ago I had to do the hair dryer trick again. About 2-3 minutes of heat and my ice maker was working again. This doesn’t happen often but for many people they don’t know this simple fix and end up calling a repairman.

Couple other questions: 1) do I need to keep the ice maker control in the on position when defrosting with the hair dryer? 2) How do I check to see if there is any more ice left in the tube if it's black and I really can't see anything? I did get a little dripping after about 60 seconds. And "equipment used" Name of refrigerator :-)
@TheRenderQ

I'd keep the ice maker in the off position when doing this. But I think with the door open the ice maker is disabled by default. And yes, there is no way to tell if there is more ice in the black tube. but if you saw water drip out you are doing it right. Just keep the hair dryer on it a bit longer just to be sure you melted enough of the ice in the tube. Hope this helps!

If the light isn't illuminating then it's more than just a frozen line. Any way you can see if anything is blocking the switch? Absolutely Zero ice maker takes forever to make solid ice and more than 24 hrs. to dump very small cubes. I adjusted to -8 degrees (fast freeze) but still takes 24 - 48+ to freeze the water completely.

What do I do if my problem is the optical sensor? Cleaned both sides with alcohol on a Qtip swab. Turned maker off then on. Is there a reset switch? Should I unplug unit?

I have the same problem. Sensor light doesn’t blink nor go solid. Think it’s a bad receiver. Will need to take it apart to see part number.

Be careful not to be lazy, though. I put my hair dryer on high, set it on the freezer floor and aimed it at the ice. It melted the ice....and the plastic on the bottom of my freezer!

My ice maker will make a batch of ice after I move the lever to turn off and turn on again. But it won't make more unless I do that again. Anyone know what the problem could be?? I have a frigidaire refrigerator btw.

Mine stopped making ice but it's because the cubes were stuck in the tray so I just used the hair dryer to melt the cubes and bam i have ice again😀

Ha ha! Yeah I have replaced the filter several times since I made this video. I often go too long without changing it!

@@TheRenderQ As a test, can I leave the water filter out at the bottom? I believe we have the same fridge. The Kitchenaid side by side KSRG25FK
