We're leaving Kigali and heading north. We and our luggage, containing one big suitcase that I unwisely brought with me to Africa, are packed into very small bus. The trip to Gihembe, about which I'll talk about, takes over an hour. Old, Rwandan songs make our trip more pleasurable.
The Gihembe refugee camp is inhabited almost only by the Congolese survivors of massacre that took place in 1997 at the Mudende refugee camp. The latter, located closer to the Democratic Republic of the Congo was attacked by armed groups of people of Hutu tribe which got there from this very country. Nearly 300 Congolese, ethnically of Tutsi tribe, who found refuge in Rwanda, were killed. After this event, whole camp was relocated to Gihembe, the place we're arriving at. This refugee camp is known for the fact that instead of giving a man a fish it teaches a man to fish. It focuses on the development and initiative of its inhabitants. That's why Ania, who is interested in humanitarian aid, suggested that we come here and I was happy to agree to go there.
