We are in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, widely believed to be the cleanest city in Africa and also leading the rankings of the continent's best cities in terms of attractiveness for running a business. Digital Revolution, which began here 20 years ago, was a success, and Rwanda began to be called "Singapore of Africa". You could say it's a miracle, considering the events of the mid-1990s. Today in Kigali the use of plastic bags is forbidden and every last Saturday of the month there is a large-scale street cleaning attended by residents. The capital of Rwanda is also one of the safest cities in the world where you can walk in any district at any time.
Rwanda itself is the smallest country in East Africa, with fairly coherent society in tribal and linguistic terms. In contrast to the Uganda that we visited where dozens of tribes communicate in separate languages, Rwanda's society is made up of two main tribes - the Hutu and the Tutsi and the language spoken by almost everyone is Kinyarwanda.
Paradoxically, it was this bipolarization of Rwandan society that facilitated the way to the tragedy in which almost one million people died. It is easier to identify the enemy where society is divided into two main tribes. The enemy is "them", the others, those who are not us.
Today, more than a quarter of a century after the genocide Rwanda seem to be quite well organized and managed country, where the trauma of the past, still dormant in people, is slowly being forgotten. The imposed ban on distinguishing tribal affiliations which is no longer placed in ID, seemingly solved the problem. After the genocide, Rwandans are no longer Hutu and Tutsi. They are Rwandans. In this situation of collective trauma, time is fortunately an ally of Rwanda.
