This goes to show that the past isn't all that romantic and wonderful as many like to believe.

In the book, Mr. Bingley's married sister and her husband were also part of the house party. That was considered sufficient chaperonage for Jane and Elizabeth. :)

Yup! Idk why these woman are keeping all the girls away from the men. The beginning where they said the girls aren't being cooperative I wanted to tell that man those women are lying. But I bet he could already tell because the girls have been up for anything that gets them more time with the men

If he wants to get up close with the countess, he just has to drop by the pub where she works.

This feels more Edwardian than Regency in the social structure.

Maybe very Early regency. Or if the girls where traveling and away from relatives

Because both of Mr. Bingley's sisters were also there - and one of them was a married woman - you could say it was a built in chaperone system.

"The Monk"? Sounds interesting. You haven't ever read "John Halifax, Gentleman", have you?

No, I don't think I've ever heard of it. What's it about?

Well, I'll try and explain. It's set from the 1790s to the 1830s, and it's about these two boys who become friends and grow up together. John Halifax is an orphan who wants to find work, and Phineas Fletcher is the invalid son of a Quaker. According to John, his father was a gentleman, and he wants to be one too. It follows the time they spend together as John rises up in the world and starts a family. It's about John mainly, but it's told from Phineas's point of view, and it's actually a really good book. I only mentioned it because you seem to like classics. It's worth a look.

All this shapirone bussiness... could someone explain please how was it concievable for Lizzy Bennett to stay over at Bingley's completely alone (apart from her sickly sister in bed upstairs) with two bachelors under the same roof? And yes, I know that was fiction, but Jane Austen's for God's sake!

I thought that the teacher wanted children? The woman that he's interested in is clearly too old to safely go through a pregnancy. Adoption or surrogacy is possible, but she'll be a pretty elderly parent!

It's too bad this romance was set before Dr. Freud's time, he'd have a field day.
