Way cool!!! I cycle 35 miles per day along Lake Michigan and deal with lots of cross wind. I'm eager to try those wheels. But US$4K -- ouch! I'll be saving for a couple of years and by then something even better may come out. It's too bad they take so much labor to build. It's going to limit their market tremendously. But hopefully, competitors will see the idea and someone will figure out how to do it cheaper. For example, instead of a carbon rim, could the same aero design be achieved with an injection-molded plastic sawtooth flaring attached to an aluminium alloy rim? The flaring would be non-structural so it wouldn't need to be strong or heavy.
@lisapet160

Very good idea about molding plastic around aluminum construction. The cardboard spoke covering works, so your idea must make wonders. And the product will look nice unlike the card board with zip-ties around spokes.

@theaveragegamer801
7 жыл бұрын
Exactly, two watts over probably the fastest wheelset in existence(or at least very very close) at 20-25 mph. I really don't think that was the take home though. The take home is that they are more stable in crosswinds plus side note they are 25 grams lighter and 2 watts faster on the flats. Plus this new shape will become a sought after feature which will hopefully make normal deep section wheel prices drop given enough time for the tech to trickle down. It like 11 speed, everyone was skeptical because it was only dura ace and it was expensive but now you can get 11 speed tiagra on a $1k road bike.

Hey Jarno, we're really proud of the brands we work with and also the way we work with them. That to my mind really would be disingenuous.
@rizzoid

As the guy that got hate for pointing out the 'helmet guide' video was just a Kask sales promo, I don't feel they did the same thing with this one -- it's all about Zipp's new wheel and doesn't pretend to be anything else. It's simply a new product showcase. And to the video: all that money for just 3-5 watts and crosswind performance on par with 303s? They may look cool but that's a terrible price-to-benefit ratio.
@ja12n05
7 жыл бұрын
Global Cycling Network Well, been a long time fan of the show, but lately the show just seems to become a big tell sell commercial. But the I can understand that you need the ads to survive, just dont "review" the products, just show them...
@cruzer6181
7 жыл бұрын
There is a big difference between paid, sponsored reviews and independent ones. Is GCN paid by Zipp to feature and review these? Do Si, and the rest of the gang give their honest opinions on these products? I enjoy GCN but what makes it credible are that all the presenters are former elite level cyclists outside of team sponsorship. If we are not getting honest feedback... well, that's a real disappointment. I do understand GCN is always upbeat and positive with content, but when it comes to products, don't fall the way of paid advertising. That's a quick death of credibility.
@gcn
7 жыл бұрын
Guys, I think you need to rewatch the video. At what point does Si review them? At what point does he pass comment as his own? Jarno this is exactly what you said you wanted it to be, "showing" the product and not reviewing. We never, ever do reviews, as you point out we couldn't because of the way GCN is structured, but we know people want to see new tech, so we're showing them.

Introduction: Yes, it's faster (*according to Zipp) DT Swiss engineers would beg to differ. www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/product-news/wheels-inspired-by-whales-dont-work-because-they-create-more-drag-302735 Tubercules are designed as *control features*. Control features *increase drag*. Look at vortex generators on airplane wings. They create localized increases in turbulence so they can prevent chaotic boundary layer separation. They actually increase drag, *so they can provide lift* in near-stall situations. They do not make the wing more efficient. They make the wing less susceptible to stall. That's critical on an airplane because stall means you have no lift at all and the plane sinks like a stone - or loses all control and tears itself apart. Generally something to be avoided. On whales, those tubercules also decrease the size of the fins required to create the same control, allowing the whale to make very sharp turns for its size. These concepts are taken directly from Zipp's own "technical explanation". But they demonstrate that Zipp's engineers don't actually understand basic aerodynamic principles. So - can a wheel "stall"? Of course not. The speed of a wheel - and the design of it are not designed to create lift. As the guy at DT Swiss mentioned, the Reynolds numbers just don't work for this to be true. Zipp has been creating bullshit in so many layers, but why is GCN so willing to swallow it?
@scottwomack7110
7 жыл бұрын
better vortex shedding! Finally! I was wondering when they'd figure it out. Next up, I'd like vacuum inducing dimples, so that the rims actual move through a vacuum, thereby eliminating drag altogether.
