If you experience burning or pain behind the sternum, frequent regurgitation, persistent cough or recurrent tonsillitis, you may be suffering from gastroesophageal reflux. But what can we do to counter it?
First you should contact your doctor, both for a correct diagnosis and for specific therapy, based on a combination of drugs, diet and behavior modifications.
First of all, those who suffer from overweight should lose weight to return to the normal range.
Furthermore, it is essential to adopt globally appropriate behaviors, such as avoiding smoking and alcohol, eating in an upright position and without speaking, chewing slowly, reducing psychological stress, not wearing restrictive clothing during and after meals, and avoiding going to bed before have digested. There are also quite specific dietary guidelines to reduce reflux. So, what to eat and what to avoid for reflux?
The reflux diet is overall balanced, made up of digestible foods in moderate portions, and divided into a greater number of meals. The recommended foods are mainly lean and lightly seasoned ones. Among those of animal origin, we find skinless white meats, fish, light fresh cheeses and egg whites. However, the consumption of cured meats and sausages, fatty meats and cheeses, fried or very fatty fish and large portions of eggs should be limited.
As regards foods of plant origin, it may be useful to limit foods with a very high fiber content and overall less digestible, such as for example stewed legumes, large portions of peppers, citrus fruits and all those products that, subjectively, the body hard to digest.
It is possible to season, but with a little extra virgin olive oil and salt, also trying to limit hot spices and anything that can prolong the gastric residence time or, in general, that can increase acidity. For many, garlic and onion are part of this category.
The recommended cooking methods are boiling, steaming, baking and pan frying but without frying. Drinks that are too cold or too hot should also be avoided, as well as foods and drinks that have a negative effect on gastric secretion and promote reflux, such as coffee, cola, cocoa and chocolate, and mint.
To counteract the symptoms of reflux it is possible to try natural remedies that protect the mucosa of the stomach and esophagus, and which alleviate the symptoms of reflux, such as aloe vera and alginic acid. Furthermore, there are specific drugs, such as proton pump inhibitors, which work by reducing gastric acidity.
