I find the most amazing rent trivia fact that Jesse Martin actually worked at the Moondance Diner with Jonathan Larson and was even trained by him. He really knew Jonathan longer than anyone else involved with the show and when he sang this song the day Jonathan died, in the play it was for angel but in reality it was for Jonathan. Talk about heartbreaking

I hate that they cut the scene that really develops Mark's character. Rodger: "Mark has got his work", they say, "Mark lives for his work," and, "Mark's in love with his work." Mark hides in his work | Mark: From what? | R: From facing your failure, facing your loneliness, facing the fact you live a lie. Yes! you live a lie; tell you why. You're always preaching not to be numb, when that's how you thrive. You pretend to create and observe when you really detach from feeling alive. | M:Perhaps it's because I'm the one of us to survive

Something just hit me about this scene. At the end, when they're singing "525, 000 seasons of LOOOOOOVE", Mimi looks back at Roger and then back at Collins. This death had a unique meaning for all of them, but to Mim, it was a jarring reminder of what she was living with. AIDS killed Angel, and she, Roger, and Collins had AIDS. This must have been terrifying for them to see what it will be like at the end.
@bootes53
9 жыл бұрын
I'll make it even sadder and remind you that 20 years ago when this first came out, AIDS was still wracking NYC and still generally a death sentence--probably a significant portion of the audience every night who watched this was HIV+, knowing either they and/or their partner would be going through it more likely than not. This was one of the elements that made "Rent" go groundbreaking and such a success at the time
@pellemckruth4070

Watching this, I've just realized how foreshadowed Angle's death was. 1. His/her name is ANGEL. 2. It's always too good to be true when you see a character in a movie and immediately fall in love with them. Happiness like that doesn't exist.3. The first "I'll Cover You" foreshadows Angel's death: "When you're worn out and tired/When your heart has expired"P.S.: Does anyone else feel the overwhelming urge to sing along with this song at the top of their lungs no matter where you are, how many times you've listened to it, or how bad you're voice sucks? melara599 And, then, just after he notices how everyone else is chiming in, he sings, “ I’ve longed to discover... something as true as this is...” and Tracy Thoms’ character suddenly stands up and calls back, “So-o-o with a thousand sweet kisses....I’ll cover you.” I don’t know why but this part gets me the most.

Live in my house, I'll be your shelter Just pay me back With one thousand kisses Be my lover, I'll cover you Open your door, I'll be your tenant Don't got much baggage, to lay at your feet But sweet kisses, I've got to spare I'll be there and I'll cover you I think they meant it When they said you can't buy love Now I know you can rent it A new lease you are my love On life, be my life Just slip me on, I'll be your blanket Wherever, whatever I'll be your coat You'll be my king, and I'll be your castle No, you be my queen, and I'll be your moat I think they meant it When they said you can't buy love Now I know you can rent it A new lease you are my love On life, be my life I've longed to discover Something as true as this is So with a thousand sweet kisses, I'll cover you (If you're cold and you're lonely) With a thousand sweet kisses, I'll cover you (You've got one nickel only) With a thousand sweet kisses, I'll cover you (When you're worn out and tired) With a thousand sweet kisses, I'll cover you (When your heart has expired) Oh lover, I'll cover you, yeah Oh lover, I'll cover you (525600 minutes) (525000 seasons of love) I'll cover you, oh

Oh my gosh. For whatever reason when Collins' head fell at the end then he turned around, thats the part that really made me cry. It's like he's turning around to see if its really true. If Angel is really in there.

I can't help thinking that the song literally covers their entire relationship. Angel found Collins alone on the street after he'd been mugged (when you're cold and you're lonely) she bought him a coat because he didn't have any money of his own (you've got one nickel only) then when Collins is holding him on the subway (when you're worn out and tired) then hugging him as he takes his last breaths and at the funeral (when your heart has expired)
